These wordless songs were composed as music first, and soundtrack second. There is a difference. A soundtrack will always be connected with whatever it is accompanying. Music doesn’t neccessarily need to reference anything else. The Empty City transformed a picture book into a non-verbal performance combining the live and animated. Without spoken words the show would dance on the dangerous intersection of music, image and action. In both theatre and film (and this production drew on both traditions) soundtrack and music are often added on at the end when everything’s been pre-determined, a passive, responsive mode for such a powerful artform. It’s literally added in ‘post’. In The Empty City, music was present from its inception and grew with the show. It was active in process and product. It frequently led rehearsals and shaped other key decisions in virtual and live performance. Rather than tailor-make music towards pre-determined moments, independent compositions created without specific reference to narrative experimented with the creation of a flock of small musical pieces. I was interested in seeing how they flew and where they roosted, rather than having them born and raised in (narrative) captivity. The sonic palette is largely acoustic, incorporating ukulele, prepared piano and supported by a range of other elements tending towards electronica. Eventually more than seventy pieces of music were made for this show, twice the number used. These pieces were then placed in relation to the emerging scenes, then adapted in duration, texture and progression to develop a relationship with the scene. In this way, music (even when it’s synced) has a conversation with a performance, an exchange that may result in surprise rather than fulfillment of expectation. Leitmotif emerged from loops and layers, as the pieces of music ‘conversed’ with each other, rather than being premeditated and imposed. Nineteen of these tracks are compiled for this release, which finds the compositions (which progressed through many versions) poised at the moment between their fullest iteration as ‘music’ and their editing and full incorporation into a sychronised soundtrack. They are released as the began: as 'music-alone' (Kivy) In picture-book writing, the mutual interplay of text and image is sometimes referred to as interanimation , and this is the kind of symbiosis this project sought in the creation of the soundtrack. Reviewers of the noted the important role of the soundtrack in two separate productions of The Empty City: “The original score…takes centre stage” (Borhani, 2013) “…swept up in its repetition of sounds and images, like a Bach fugue” (Zampatti, 2013)

Macrophonics II presents new Australian work emerging from the leading edge of performance interface research. The program addresses the emerging dialogue between traditional media and emerging digital media, as well as dialogues across a broad range of musical traditions. Recent technological developments are causing a complete reevaluation of the relationships between media and genres in art, and Macrophonics II presents a cross-section of responses to this situation. Works in the program foreground an approach to performance that integrates sensors with novel performance control devices, and/or examine how machines can be made musical in performance. The program presents works by Australian artists Donna Hewitt, Julian Knowles and Wade Marynowsky, with choreography by Avril Huddy and dance performance by Lizzie and Zaimon Vilmanis. From sensor-based microphones and guitars, through performance a/v, to post-rock dronescapes, movement inspired works and experimental electronica, Macrophonics II provides a broad and engaging survey of new performance approaches in mediatised environments. Initial R&D for the work was supported by a range of institutions internationally, including the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Queensland, STEIM (Holland) and the Nes Artist Residency (Iceland).

"This work forms part of a much larger collaborative album project in progress between Tim Bruniges, Julian Knowles and David Trumpmanis which explores the intersections between traditional rock instrumentation and analogue and digital media. All of the creative team are performers, composers and producers. The material for the album was thus generated by a series of in studio improvisations and performances with each collaborator assuming a range of different and alternating roles – guitars, electronics, drums, percussion, bass, keyboards production. Thematically the work explores the intersection of instrumental (post) rock, ambient music, and historical electro-acoustic tape composition traditions. Over the past 10 years, musical practice has become increasingly hybrid, with the traditional boundaries between genre becoming progressively eroded. At the same time, digital tools have replaced many of the major analogue technologies that dominated music production and performance in the 20th century. The disappearance of analogue media in mainstream musical practice has had a profound effect on the sonic characteristics of contemporary music and the gestural basis for its production. Despite the increasing power of digital technologies, a small but dedicated group of practitioners has continued to prize and use analogue technology for its unique sounds and the non-linearity of the media, aestheticising its inherent limitations and flaws. At the most radical end of this spectrum lie glitch and lo-fi musical forms, seen in part as reactions to the clinical nature of digital media and the perceived lack of character associated with its transparency. Such developments have also problematised the traditional relationships between media and genre, where specific techniques and their associated sounds have become genre markers. Tristate is an investigation into this emerging set of dialogues between analogue and digital media across composition, production and performance. It employs analogue tape loops in performance, where a tape machine ‘performer’ records and hand manipulates loops of an electric guitar performer on ‘destroyed’ tape stock (intentionally damaged tape), processing the output of this analogue system in the digital domain with contemporary sound processors. In doing so it investigates how the most extreme sonic signatures of analogue media – tape dropout and noise – can be employed alongside contemporary digital sound gestures in both compositional and performance contexts and how the extremes of the two media signatures can brought together both compositionally and performatively. In respect of genre, the work established strategies for merging compositional techniques from the early musique concrete tradition of the 1940s with late 60s popular music experimentalism and the laptop glitch electronica movement of the early 2000s. Lastly, the work explores how analogue recording studio technologies can be used as performance tools, thus illuminating and foregrounding the performative/gestural dimensions of traditional analogue studio tools in use."

Through a consideration of audience experience of embodiment in contemporary dance performance, this project used kinesthetic empathy as a theoretical construct to inform choreographic decision-making. The research outcome challenged the traditional performer/audience relationship through an interactive dance performance work entitled Planets. This acted as a platform that allowed both audience and performer to collaboratively listen to, process and form movement in a shared kinesthetic state. This connection was enabled through the distribution of interactive art objects, which responded to the shifting proximity between performer and audience. The performance was thus experienced through following a shared goal as instigated by the interactive technology. Through practice-led research, knowledge from kinesthetic empathy, embodied cognition and the mirror neuron system were used to develop the project’s aim in encouraging interactive audiences to engage in movement. This aim influenced studio explorations of movement through an enquiry into the kinesthetic self in dance. Investigations used movement quality, tension, mobility and acceleration to access a familiar movement vocabulary appropriate for a broad interactive audience. This informed the role of the researcher as performer. Planets was developed as a collaborative project between Michael Smith and interactive visual designer Andy Bates and performed over three nights at the Ars Electronica Festival 2014 in Linz, Austria. Supported by documented footage from Planets and audience responses to the performances, this paper draws together the theoretical underpinnings behind the development of the work and includes the experiential perspective of the performer.

Fossils provide the principal basis for temporal calibrations, which are critical to the accuracy of divergence dating analyses. Translating fossil data into minimum and maximum bounds for calibrations is the most important, and often least appreciated, step of divergence dating. Properly justified calibrations require the synthesis of phylogenetic, paleontological, and geological evidence and can be difficult for non-specialists to formulate. The dynamic nature of the fossil record (e.g., new discoveries, taxonomic revisions, updates of global or local stratigraphy) requires that calibration data be updated continually lest they become obsolete. Here, we announce the Fossil Calibration Database (http://fossilcalibrations.org), a new open-access resource providing vetted fossil calibrations to the scientific community. Calibrations accessioned into this database are based on individual fossil specimens and follow best practices for phylogenetic justification and geochronological constraint. The associated Fossil Calibration Series, a calibration-themed publication series at Palaeontologia Electronica, will serve as one key pipeline for peer-reviewed calibrations to enter the database.

With the introduction of relaxed-clock molecular dating methods, the role of fossil calibration has expanded from providing a timescale, to also informing the models for molecular rate variation across the phylogeny. Here I suggest fossil calibration bounds for four mammal clades, Monotremata (platypus and echidnas), Macropodoidea (kangaroos and potoroos), Caviomorpha-Phiomorpha (South American and African hystricognath rodents), and Chiroptera (bats). In each case I consider sources of uncertainty in the fossil record and provide a molecular dating analysis to examine how the suggested calibration priors are further informed by other mammal fossil calibrations and molecular data.

Con el objetivo de conocer la presencia de agentes Etiológicos causantes de homoparásitosis en equinos se realizó un estudio en la faja del Pacifico de Nicaragua durante los meses de Abril a Noviembre del 2006, en los Departamentos de Carazo, Chinandega, Granada, León, Managua, Masaya y Rivas. Esta zona geográfica del país presenta una temperatura media anual en el rango de 30ºC a 32ºC y una humedad relativa de 76% ± 78 5%; precipitación pluvial media anual en el rango de 1483.9 a 1970.0 mm; la altitud osciló entre 82.97 msnm a 580.13 msnm. Se realizo un muestreo de 150 equinos mayores de dos años, correspondiente al 1.30 % de la población muestradas, en los cuales se tomo 3cc de sangre de la vena yugular, mediante una punción, a las muestras de sangre se les realizo dos frotis sanguíneos, y se obtuvo el hematocrito de la misma , tiñéndose los frotis sanguíneos por el método de Giemsa, posteriormente se observaron los frotis sanguíneos por cada equino muestrado, se utilizo microscopia óptica de inmersión para identificar lo hemoparásitos haciendo uso de los parámetros morfológicos de sus clasificación taxonómica. Se encontraron 58 equinos positivos de Babesia ssp correspondiente al 38.66 % de los 150 equinos muestrados y 92 casos de equinos negativos de Babesia ssp correspondiente al 61.33 % de los 150 equinos muestrados. Además se encontró prevalencia de Babesia de 5.92% en toda la faja del pacifico, encontrando para cada uno de los Departamentos muestrados son: a Managua con un 7.14 %, Masaya 6.43%, Granada 5.71%, Rivas 7.14%, Carazo 3,57%, León 3,57%, Chinandega 7,86% de Babesia ssp.

[Es]Actualmente ninguna área científica es ajena a la revolución de la nanociencia; las nanopartículas atraen el interés de muchos investigadores desde el punto de vista de la ciencia fundamental y para sus aplicaciones tecnológicas. Las nanopartículas ofrecen la posibilidad de fabricar sensores que sean capaces de detectar desde un virus hasta concentraciones de substancias patógenas que no pueden ser detectadas por los métodos convencionales. Hoy en día existes 82 tratamientos contra el cáncer basadas en la utilización de nanopartículas y los materiales composite con nanopartículas se utilizan como medio de protección frente la radiación del rango de microondas. En la rama de ciencias ambientales, las nanopartículas metálicas sirven como materiales anticontaminantes. En este trabajo se ha estudiado la estructura y las propiedades magnéticas de las nanopartículas de FeNi preparadas mediante el método de explosión eléctrica de hilo. Con la técnica de Rayos–X(DRX) se ha determinado que las nanopartículas se cristalizan en un sistema cúbico FCC con un parámetro de celda de 3.596 Å, también, se ha obtenido el tamaño de dominio coherente que es de 35 nm. La muestra se ha sometido a un programa de temperatura controlada para seguir la evolución de la estructura cristalina y del tamaño del cristal, tanto en atmósfera oxidante como en vacío. Para el aprendizaje de los microscopios utilizados en este trabajo, se ha asistido al curso “Fundamentos de microscopia electrónica de barrido y microanálisis” impartido por SGIker de la UPV/EHU. Se han empleado los microscopios electrónicos SEM y TEM para obtener imágenes de gran resolución de la muestra y analizar su contenido elemental. Partiendo de las imágenes sacadas por el SEM se ha calculado el valor medio del tamaño de las partículas de la muestra, 58 nm. Mediante el Mastersizer 2000 se ha medido el tamaño de las partículas y/o agregados por método de difracción láser, disgregando la muestra todo lo posible hasta conseguir el tamaño medio que se aproxime al de una sola partícula, 100nm. Por último, para la caracterización magnética se ha servido del VSM que mide el momento magnético de una muestra cuando ésta vibra en presencia de un campo magnético estático, consiguiendo una imanación de saturación de 125 emu/g. Hemos fabricado y caracterizado las nanopartículas magnéticas de hierro-níquel y los resultados obtenidos han sido enviados a un congreso especializado de ciencia de materiales (ISMANAM - 2013, Italia).

Se desarrollara un prototipo funcional de brújula electronica utilizando un sensor de campo magnético de alta sensibilidad basado en el fenómeno de Magneto-Impedancia Gigante (GMI). El trabajo es eminentemente práctico y el alumno utilizará equipamiento científico disponible en los grupos de investigación del Departamento. Tiene componentes relacionadas con los materiales magnéticos, el diseño de circuitos electromagnéticos y la instrumentación y control.

ENGLISH: Increments in otoliths (sagittae) were examined, using light and scanning electron microscopy, to determine ages and estimate growth rates of larval and early-juvenile black skipjack, Euthynnus lineatus. Larvae and juveniles were collected between 1987 and 1989 from coastal waters of Panama in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Results from a laboratory experiment indicated that immersion for 6 and 12 hours in a 200 mg/L solution of tetracycline hydrochloride adequately marks otoliths and that increments are formed daily in the sagittae of postflexion larvae and early juveniles. Further, survival rates of tetracycline-treated fish were not significantly different from those of control fish. Growth rates were derived from length-age relationships of 218 field-collected specimens ranging in size from 5.7 to 20.3 mm SL. A growth rate of 0.70 mm/d was estimated from the weighted regression of standard length on age for all specimens. This rate lies within the range reported for larvae and early juveniles of other species of subtropical and tropical scombrids. Growth rates of postflexion larvae and early juveniles were not significantly different between the rainy season in July-August 1988 and the dry, upwelling season in January-February 1989. Growth was, however, significantly more variable for older individuals in July-August than in January-February, and may correspond, in part, to seasonal patchiness of prey. The growth rates of the otoliths relative to fish length were also not significantly different between seasons; however, the otoliths were larger relative to the lengths of fish collected in the rainy season, which may reflect slower growth during earlier larval stages. SPANISH: Se examinaron incrementos en otolitos (ságitas), usando microscopia de luz y de barrido electrónico, a fin de determinar la edad y estimar las tasas de crecimiento de barriletes negros, Euthynnus lineatus, larvales y juveniles tempranos. Entre 1987 y 1989 se capturaron larvas y juveniles en las aguas costeras de Panamá en el Océano Pacífico oriental. Los resultados de un experimento de laboratorio indicaron que una inmersión de 6 a 12 horas de duración en una solución de 200 mg/L de hidrocloro de tetraciclina marca los otolitos adecuadamente y que los incrementos se forman a diario en las ságitas de larvas en postflexión y juveniles tempranos. Además, las tasas de supervivencia de los peces tratados con tetraciclina no fueron significativamente diferentes a aquellas de los peces de control. Se calcularon las tasas de crecimiento a partir de las relaciones de talla-edad de 218 especímenes de TE entre 5.7 y 20.3 mm capturados en el mar. Se estimó.una tasa de crecimiento de 0.70 mm/día a partir de la regresión ponderada de talla estándar sobre edad para todos los especímenes. Esta tasa cae dentro del rango reportado para larvas y juveniles tempranos de otras especies de escómbridos subtropicales y tropicales. Las tasas de crecimiento de larvas en postflexión y juveniles tempranos no fueron significativamente diferentes entre la temporada de lluvias en julio-agosto de 1988 y la temporada de sequía y afloramiento en enero-febrero de 1989. Sin emoargo, el crecimiento fue significativamente más variable para los individuos de mayor edad en julio-agosto que en enero-febrero, y quizás corresponda parcialmente a la irregularidad temporal de la abundancia de presas. Las tasas de crecimiento de los otolitos en relación a la talla de los peces tampoco fueron significativamente diferentes entre temporadas; sin embargo, los otolitos eran más grandes en relación a la talla en peces capturados en la temporada de lluvias, lo cual podría reflejar crecimiento más lento durante las etapas larvales más tempranas. O objetivo deste estudo in vitro foi analisar o comportamento superficial do titânio comercialmente puro (grau 2 ASTM) usinado e obtido pelo processamento de metalurgia do pó sob a ação de diferentes soluções fluoretadas, através da análise do grau de corrosão em microscopia óptica (MO) e da rugosidade superficial. Além disso, o estudo se propôs a comparar essas análises com os resultados obtidos com o titânio fundido da dissertação de mestrado de Barros (2004). Todas as amostras receberam procedimento metalográfico padrão e foram divididas em grupos: Gr.1- saliva artificial com pH 7.0 (controle), Gr.2- gel de flúor fosfato acidulado a 1,23% com pH 3.5, Gr.3- gel de NaF a 2% com pH 6.5, Gr.4- solução de NaF a 0,05% com pH 4.0 e Gr.5- solução de NaF a 0,05% com pH 7.5. As amostras foram expostas a estas soluções por 1, 4, 8 e 16 min, intercaladas com imersão em saliva artificial por 24 h, e depois foram observadas em MO e MEV, a cada intervalo de tempo. As imagens em MO, 100x, foram classificadas através de escores de 0 a 4, conforme o grau de corrosão. A rugosidade foi analisada utilizando o parâmetro Ra. Os resultados da análise de MO foram tratados estatisticamente pelo teste qui-quadrado e da rugosidade pelo teste F de Snedecor e de Bonferroni (p<0,05). Nos três tipos de amostras, o Gr2 apresentou a corrosão mais severa, e os Gr.4 e 5 apresentaram os menores graus de corrosão. Entretanto, nas amostras usinadas o Gr5 apresentou uma corrosão menos acentuada em relação ao Gr4. No Gr3 houve um aumento da corrosão em função do tempo, sendo que as amostras fundidas mostraram este aumento mais rapidamente. Houve um aumento significativo na rugosidade superficial no Gr.2 nos três tipos de amostras. Nos diversos grupos, os valores de rugosidade superficial das amostras fundidas foram significantemente maiores que os das usinadas e as de metalurgia do pó. Os autores concluíram que as soluções fluoretadas de uso odontológico são danosas às superfícies do titânio fundido, usinado e metalurgia do pó, principalmente as soluções com alta concentração de fluoreto.

Neste trabalho, dois copolímeros à base de 2-vinilpiridina (2Vpy), estireno (Sty) e divinilbenzeno (DVB) foram sintetizados empregando a técnica de polimerização em suspensão aquosa via radical livre. Os copolímeros com diferentes características morfológicas foram preparados variando a composição da mistura diluente, constituída por tolueno e n-heptano, solventes solvatantes e não solvatantes para as cadeias poliméricas. A caracterização estrutural desses materiais foi feita através de medidas de área específica, volume de poros, diâmetro médio de poros e densidade aparente. Além disso, esses materiais foram avaliados por microscopia ótica e eletrônica de varredura, por espectroscopia na região do infravermelho (FTIR), análise termogravimétrica (TGA) e análise elementar. Os copolímeros Sty-DVB-2Vpy foram modificados quimicamente através de reação de quaternização das unidades de 2Vpy usando dois reagentes: iodeto de metila e acrilonitrila. A quaternização dos copolímeros Sty-DVB-2Vpy foi confirmada através de espectroscopia de infravermelho, pelo aparecimento das bandas de absorção características do íon peridíneo e do grupo nitrila e também pela análise do comportamento térmico. Os produtos dessas reações foram submetidos à avaliação da capacidade bactericida através do método de contagem em placas contra suspensão de Escherichia coli. O copolímero do tipo gel quaternizado com iodeto de metila apresentou a maior ação bactericida registrada, com eficiência até a concentração de 104 células/mL. Contudo, a maioria dos materiais quaternizados não apresentou ação biocida significativa. Com o objetivo de maximizar a atividade bactericida dos materiais preparados, os copolímeros quaternizados e não quaternizados foram impregnados com iodo por meio de duas metodologias: em solução e em fase vapor. O teor de iodo incorporado foi quantificado por análise gravimétrica. Foi possível observar que os copolímeros quaternizados e impregnados com iodo se mostraram mais eficientes como agentes bactericidas que os copolímeros não funcionalizados impregnados com iodo. De uma forma geral, foi possível perceber que a ação bactericida dos polímeros é fruto da associação entre as suas características de porosidade, o grau de quaternização alcançado e o teor de iodo incorporado. Para efeito de comparação foram feitos também ensaios bactericidas com uma resina comercial à base de Sty-DVB com grupo amônio quaternário, VP OC 1950. Os testes mostraram que a resina comercial não possui atividade bactericida. A impregnação de iodo a essa resina comercial forneceu um material com ação biocida semelhante à do copolímero do tipo gel, quaternizado com iodeto de metila e impregnado com iodo
