The immune system is able to produce antibodies, which have the capacity to recognize and to bind to foreign molecules or pathogenic organisms. Currently, there are a diversity of diseases that can be treated with antibodies, like immunoglobulins G (IgG). Thereby, the development of cost-efficient processes for their extraction and purification is an area of main interest in biotechnology. Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) have been investigated for this purpose, once they allow the reduction of costs and the number of steps involved in the process, when compared with conventional methods. Nevertheless, typical ABS have not showed to be selective, resulting in low purification factors and yields. In this context, the addition of ionic liquids (ILs) as adjuvants can be a viable and potential alternative to tailor the selectivity of these systems. In this work, ABS composed of polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weight, and a biodegradable salt (potassium citrate) using ILs as adjuvants (5 wt%), were studied for the extraction and purification of IgG from a rabbit source. Initially, it was tested the extraction time, the effect on the molecular weight of PEG in a buffer solution of K3C6H5O7/C6H8O7 at pH≈7, and the effect of pH (59) on the yield (YIgG) and extraction efficiency (EEIgG%) of IgG. The best results regarding EEIgG% were achieved with a centrifugation step at 1000 rpm, during 10 min, in order to promote the separation of phases followed by 120 min of equilibrium. This procedure was then applied to the remaining experiments. The results obtained in the study of PEGs with different molecular weights, revealed a high affinity of IgG for the PEG-rich phase, and particularly for PEGs of lower molecular weight (EEIgG% of 96 % with PEG 400). On the other hand, the variation of pH in the buffer solution did not show a significant effect on the EEIgG%. Finally, it was evaluated the influence of the addition of different ILs (5% wt) on the IgG extraction in ABS composed of PEG 400 at pH≈7. In these studies, it was possible to obtain EEIgG% of 100% with the ILs composed of the anions [TOS]-, [CH3CO2]-and Cl-, although the obtained YIgG% were lower than 40%. On the other hand, the ILs composed of the anions Br-, as well as of the cation [C10mim]+, although not leading to EEIgG% of 100%, provide an increase in the YIgG%. ABS composed of PEG, a biodegradable organic salt and ILs as adjuvants, revealed to be an alternative and promising method to purify IgG. However, additional studies are still required in order to reduce the loss of IgG.

In previous immuno-epidemiological studies of the naturally acquired antibody responses to merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) of Plasmodium vivax, we had evidence that the responses to distinct erythrocytic stage antigens could be differentially regulated. The present study was designed to compare the antibody response to three asexual erythrocytic stage antigens vaccine candidates of P. vivax. Recombinant proteins representing the 19 kDa C-terminal region of MSP-1(PvMSP19), apical membrane antigen n-1 ectodomain (PvAMA-1), and the region II of duffy binding protein (PvDBP-RII) were compared in their ability to bind to IgG antibodies of serum samples collected from 220 individuals from the state of Pará, in the North of Brazil. During patent infection with P. vivax, the frequency of individuals with IgG antibodies to PvMSP119, PvAMA-1, and PvDBP-RII were 95, 72.7, and 44.5% respectively. Although the frequency of responders to PvDBP-RII was lower, this frequency increased in individuals following multiple malarial infections. Individually, the specific antibody levels did not decline significantly nine months after treatment, except to PvMSP119. Our results further confirm a complex regulation of the immune response to distinct blood stage antigens. The reason for that is presently unknown but it may contribute to the high risk of re-infection in individuals living in the endemic areas.

Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in support of government applications has already seen significant growth and the potential for use of UAVs in commercial applications is expected to rapidly expand in the near future. However, the issue remains on how such automated or operator-controlled aircraft can be safely integrated into current airspace. If the goal of integration is to be realized, issues regarding safe separation in densely populated airspace must be investigated. This paper investigates automated separation management concepts in uncontrolled airspace that may help prepare for an expected growth of UAVs in Class G airspace. Not only are such investigations helpful for the UAV integration issue, the automated separation management concepts investigated by the authors can also be useful for the development of new or improved Air Traffic Control services in remote regions without any existing infrastructure. The paper will also provide an overview of the Smart Skies program and discuss the corresponding Smart Skies research and development effort to evaluate aircraft separation management algorithms using simulations involving realworld data communication channels, and verified against actual flight trials. This paper presents results from a unique flight test concept that uses real-time flight test data from Australia over existing commercial communication channels to a control center in Seattle for real-time separation management of actual and simulated aircraft. The paper also assesses the performance of an automated aircraft separation manager.

Perhaps more than any other sub-discipline in optometry and vision science, the academic field of cornea and contact lenses is populated by an assortment of extroverted and flamboyant characters who constantly travel the world, entertaining clinicians with dazzling audiovisual presentations, informing them about the latest advances in the field and generally promoting their own scientific agendas. The antithesis of this is Leo Carney (Figure 1), a highly accomplished researcher, teacher, mentor and administrator, who has quietly and with great dignity carved out an impressive career in academic optometry. Indeed, Leo Carney is optometry's quintessential ‘quiet achiever’

This volume brings together a number of essays that seek to explore the nature of early modern scholarship, ostensibly with special regard to the themes of interdisciplinarity and collaboration. As one might expect, the essays thus cover a gamut of topics – political manoeuvring, philosophical debates, gift-giving and dramatic performance – and each study is important and useful in its own right. As a whole, however, this collection serves more as a starting point for an exploration of its themes, than as an authoritative overview of the subject at hand.

It was reported that the manuscript of Crash was returned to the publisher with a note reading ‘The author is beyond psychiatric help’. Ballard took the lay diagnosis as proof of complete artistic success. Crash conflates the Freudian tropes of libido and thanatos, overlaying these onto the twentieth century erotic icon, the car. Beyond mere incompetent adolescent copulatory fumblings in the back seat of the parental sedan or the clichéd phallic locomotor of the mid-life Ferrari, Ballard engages the full potentialities of the automobile as the locus and sine qua non of a perverse, though functional erotic. ‘Autoeroticism’ is transformed into automotive, traumatic or surgical paraphilia, driving Helmut Newton’s insipid photo-essays of BDSM and orthopædics into an entirely new dimension, dancing precisely where (but more crucially, because) the ‘body is bruised to pleasure soul’. The serendipity of quotidian accidental collisions is supplanted, in pursuit of the fetishised object, by contrived (though not simulated) recreations of iconographic celebrity deaths. Penetration remains as a guiding trope of sexuality, but it is confounded by a perversity of focus. Such an obsessive pursuit of this autoerotic-as-reality necessitates the rejection of the law of human sexual regulation, requiring the re-interpretation of what constitutes sex itself by looking beyond or through conventional sexuality into Ballard’s paraphiliac and nightmarish consensual Other. This Other allows for (if not demands) the tangled wreckage of a sportscar to function as a transformative sexual agent, creating, of woman, a being of ‘free and perverse sexuality, releasing within its dying chromium and leaking engine-parts, all the deviant possibilities of her sex’.
