A novel vinyl monomer with an isocyanate functional group, m-isopropenyl-alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl-isocyanate (m-TMI), was grafted onto isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as the initiator. This would open up the possibility of using the grafted polymer with the reactive isocyanate group as compatibilizer for blending carbohydrates such as cellulose with. polypropylene. The grafting was carried out in a Brabender Plasticoder at 180degreesC. The effects of monomer and initiator concentrations on the yield of grafting were investigated by performing statistical analysis. While the grafting yield increased with the concentration of DCP at any given concentration of m-TMI, the variation of the grafting yield with m-TMI concentration, for a given concentration of DCP, went through a maximum, the optimum yield of 7.8% (w/w) being obtained at 10 wt.% concentration of both DCP and m-TMI. The grafting reaction is. accompanied by considerable chain scission of I-PP, resulting in a decrease in the molecular weight of the grafted polymer. While the molecular weight drops sharply even at a low concentration of DCP, there occurs no further significant change in the molecular weight even at much higher concentrations of the initiator.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of beta-nucleated iPP before and after being annealed at different temperatures (90-160 degrees C) have been analyzed, Annealing induced different degrees of variation in fracture toughness of beta-nucleated iPP samples. namely, slight enhancement at relatively low annealing temperatures (< 110 degrees C) and great improvement at moderate temperatures (120-130 degrees C), whereas dramatic deterioration at relatively high temperatures ( > 140 degrees C) has been observed. The variation of fracture toughness of beta-nucleated iPP is observed to be dependent on the content of beta-NA. Experiments, including scanning electronic microscope (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), are performed to study the variations of microstructures as well as the toughening mechanism of the beta-nucleated iPP after being annealed.

A novel method in situ chlorinating-graft copolymerization (ISCGC) of grafting maleic anhydride (MAH) on isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in gas-solid phase was investigated in this paper. Chlorine (Cl-2) was used as initiator, chlorinating agent and termination agent at the same time during the reaction. The iPP was chlorinated as well as grafted with MAH in the reaction process. The product with chlorine and MAH in the same molecule was named as PP-cg-MAH. Existence of PP-cg-MAH was identified by Fourier transform infrared. Thermal behavior and crystallinity of PP-cg-MAH were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and polarizing microscope. Influencing factors for the value of graft degree were also discussed. Compared with conventional peroxide initiated graft method, ISCGC revealed higher MAH graft efficiency (33%), and particularly alleviated degradation of iPP. iPP could be grafted successfully and without changing physical properties dramatically through this method.

Molecular dynamics simulations are adopted to calculate the equation of state characteristic parameters P*, rho*, and T* of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and poly(ethylene-co-octene) (PEOC), which can be further used in the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT) to describe the respective physical properties. The calculated T* is a function of the temperature, which was also found in the literature. To solve this problem, we propose a Boltzmann fitting of the data and obtain T* at the high-temperature limit. With these characteristic parameters, the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data of iPP and PEOC are predicted by the SLLFT equation of state. To justify the correctness of our results, we also obtain the PVT data for iPP and PEOC by experiments. Good agreement is found between the two sets of data. By integrating the Euler-Lagrange equation and the Cahn-Hilliard relation, we predict the density profiles and the surface tensions for iPP and PEOC, respectively. Furthermore, a recursive method is proposed to obtain the characteristic interaction energy parameter between iPP and PEOC. This method, which does not require fitting to the experimental phase equilibrium data, suggests an alternative way to predict the phase diagrams that are not easily obtained in experiments.

Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) was used to investigate the effects of shear on the crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP) with beta-nucleating agent. The melt was subjected to shear at the shear rate from 0.5 to 60 s(-1) for 5 s with a CSS450 shear stage. For the PP with low content of the additive, the formation mechanism of the beta crystals is almost the same as that of pure isotactic polypropylene (iPP), viz., shear induces. Otherwise, for the samples with high content of the additive, the formation mechanism of the beta form are nucleating agent induces. The results clearly show that shear restrains the formation of high beta phase for the melt with additive.

The effects of three triblock copolymers of poly [styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene] (SEBS) of different molecular weight (MW) on the morphology, tensile strength and thermal behavior of isotactic polypropylene/syndiotactic polystyrene (iPP/sPS, 80/20) blend are investigated. Morphology observation shows that both the medium MW and the lower MW SEBS are more effective than the higher MW SEBS in compatibilizing the blends. Tensile tests revels both the medium and low MW compatibilizer lead to a significant improvement in tensile strength, while the higher MW compatibilizer is efficient in increasing the elongation at break of the blends. The localization of compatibilizers in the blends is observed by mean of SEM and the correlation between the distribution of the compatibilizers and mechanical properties of the blends is evaluated. The mechanical properties of the iPP/sPS blends depend on not only the interfacial activity of the compatibilizers but also the distribution of the compatibilizer in the blend. Addition of the compatibilizers to the blend causes a remarkable decrease in the magnitude of the crystallization peak of sPS at its usual T-c. Vicat softening points demonstrate that the heat resistance of iPP/sPS blend is much higher than that of the pure iPP.

Crystallization and phase behavior in solution-cast thin films of crystalline syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene (s-1,2-PB) and isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) blends have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques. Thin films of pure s-1,2-PB consist of parallel lamellae with the c-axis perpendicular to the film plane and the lateral scale in micrometer size, while those of i-PP are composed of cross-hatched and single-crystal-like lamellae. For the blends, TEM and AFM observations show that with addition of i-PP, the s-1,2-PB long lamellae become bended and i-PP itself tends to form dispersed convex regions oil a continuous s-1,2-PB phase even when i-PP is the predominant component, which indicates a strong phase separation between the two polymers during film formation. FESEM micrographs of both lower and upper surfaces of the films reveal that the s-1,2-PB lamellae pass through i-PPconvex regions from the bottom, i.e. the dispersed i-PP regions lie on the continuous s-1,2-PB phase. The structural development is attributed to an interplay of crystallization and phase separation of the blends in the film forming process.

Rare earth oxide, neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), -assisted melt free-radical grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) on isotactic-polypropylene (i-PP) was carried out by reactive extrusion. The experimental results reveal that the addition of Nd2O3 into reactive system leads to an enhancement of the grafting degree of MAH, along with an elevated degradation of i-PP matrix. When Nd2O3 content is 4.5 mmol %, the increment of the grafting degree of MAH (maximally) is up to about 30% compared with that of the related system without adding Nd2O3, while the severest degradation of i-PP matrix simultaneously occurs. On the basis of the reaction mechanism of PP-g-MAH proposed before, the sequence of beta-scission and grafting reaction is discussed in detail. It is found that, for the reactive system studied, most tertiary macroradicals first undergo beta-scission, and then, grafting reaction with MAH takes place at the new radical chain ends. The imported Nd2O3 has no effect on the aforementioned reaction mechanism, whereas it enhances the initiating efficiency of the initiator, dicumyl peroxide (DCP).

The multiple melting behavior of several commercial resins of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and random copolymer, poly(propylene-co-ethylene) (PPE), after stepwise isothermal crystallization (SIC) were studied by differential scanning calorimeter and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). For iPP samples, three typical melting endotherms appeared after SIC process when heating rate was lower than 10 degreesC/min. The WAXD experiments proved that only alpha-form crystal was formed during SIC process and no transition from alpha1- to alpha2-form occurred during heating process. Heating rate dependence for each endotherm was discussed and it was concluded that there were only, two major crystals with different thermal stability. For the PPE sample, more melting endotherms appeared after stepwise isothermal crystallization. The introduction of ethylene comonomer in isotactic propylene backbone further decreased the regularity of molecular chain, and the short isotactic propylene sequences could crystallize into gamma-form crystal having a low melting temperature whereas the long sequences crystallized into alpha-form crystal having high melting temperature.

The origins of the single- and double-melting endotherms of isotactic polypropylene crystallized at different temperatures were studied carefully by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental data show that spontaneous crystallization occurs when the crystallization temperature is lower than 117 degrees C; thus the lamellae formed are imperfect. At a lower heating rate, the recrystallization or reorganization of these imperfect lamellae leads to double endotherms. On the other hand, when the crystallization temperature is higher than 136 degrees C, two major kinds of lamellae with different thickness are developed during the isothermal process, which also results in the double-melting endotherms. In the intermediate temperature range the lamellae formed are perfect, and there is only a single peak in the distribution of lamellar thickness. This explains the origin of the single-melting endotherm. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. In this work, chemical structures and molecular parameters of grafted materials of PP-g-MAH prepared by melt reactive extrusion were studied by using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometer and gel permeation chromatography. It was found that the initial radicals, due to homolitic scission of dicumyl peroxide could be combined with maleic anhydride (MAH) monomers as well as polypropylene (PP) molecular chains. The homopolymerization of MAH cannot occur and the MAH radicals undergo a dismutational reaction under the processing condition (180-190 degreesC). A modified mechanism of melt grafting MAH onto PP has been proposed tentatively on the basis of our experimental results and other experimental findings published in the literature. The controlling factors for the epitaxial crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates have been studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results obtained in this work indicate that the crystallization process must be considered in the investigation of epitaxial growth of polymers on polymeric substrates, because of the unique morphological and crystallization characteristics of polymers. Crystallization rate has an important effect on the epitaxial crystallization of polymers. Higher rates result in the formation of thicker epitaxial layers. Isothermal crystallization temperature is another factor affecting epitaxial growth of polymers. Lower temperatures are favorable to epitaxial crystallization of polymers. There exists a critical epitaxial temperature at given experimental conditions, above which no epitaxial growth occurs at all. The influence of crystal dimensions of both the substrates and the deposited polymers on epitaxial growth confirms that secondary nucleation is an important controlling factor for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization in polymers. The requirement satisfying the secondary nucleation criterion is that the substrate crystal dimension in the matching direction must be greater than the crystal thickness of the deposited polymer. Once the requirement of the secondary nucleation is satisfied, subsequent epitaxial growth is based on the lamellar growth habit of the deposited polymer itself. The crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at elevated temperatures (e.g., from 125 to 128 degrees C), was studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results show that epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs only in a thin layer which is in direct contact with the iPP substrate, when the HDPE is crystallized from the melt on the oriented iPP substrates at 125 degrees C. The critical layer thickness of the epitaxially crystallized HDPE is not more than 30 nm when the HDPE is isothermally crystallized on the oriented iPP substrates at 125 degrees C. When the crystallization temperature is above 125 degrees C, the HDPE crystallizes in the form of crystalline aggregates and a few individual crystalline lamellae. But both the crystalline aggregates and the individual crystalline lamellae have no epitaxial orientation relationship with the iPP substrate. This means that there exists a critical crystallization temperature for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization of HDPE on the melt-drawn oriented iPP substrates (i.e., 125 degrees C). The structure of quenched isotactic polypropylene (iPP) films, including samples etched with fuming nitric acid (FNA), has been studied by infrared (IR) spectra, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The changes of IR, SAXS, DSC, and WAXD results induced by annealing for etched samples have been compared with those for unetched ones. The IR absorbance spectrum of the quenched iPP etched by FNA did not change. In addition, the SAXS intensity did not increase when these samples were annealed, indicating that the total (IR) crystallinity (i.e., the content of chain segments in the helical conformations) of the etched samples does not increase. However, WAXD patterns of the samples changed in a manner similar to those of the unetched one, from the original two blurred diffraction peaks to the sharp crystal patterns of alpha-form iPP, suggesting that the mesomorphic (or liquid crystal-like) phase has reorganized to alpha-form crystals. It is concluded that the change of WAXD of quenched iPP films during annealing results mainly from transformation of order in the mesomorphic phase, rather than only from an increase of crystal size. In other words, mesomorphic-form iPP is not constituted by any known crystals (such as alpha or beta crystals) in small sizes; its WAXD pattern reflects truly the degree of order in the mesomorphic phase.
