The potential for co-management in fisheries

Concerns have been raised over the sustainability of the fisheries resource base of Lake Victoria for some time. The draft National Fisheries Policy states: "The key issues in the fisheries sector are resource depletion through overfishing aggravated by use of destructive fishing gear and methods" (MAAIF 2000). A fishery is said to be degraded if any or all of the indicators begin to show including decline in catches from the fishery, higher proportion of immature fish in the catch and reduction in the species composition of the catch. Inadequate implementation of fisheries management is considered the main cause of resource degradation. One of the factors identified as constraints to fisheries management has been lack of involvement of the resource users.

Governance in co-management on the Lake Victoria fisheries, Uganda

In September 2007, the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute carried out a socio-economic survey on Governance in Co- Management in the fisheries of Lake Victoria. The purpose of the study was to determine the nature and performance of governance of the fisheries resources through co-management structures and systems.

Relaxation and fracture characteristics in Co-based amorphous alloys

In this article a study of the fracture characteristics of Co66Fe4Mo2Si16B12 amorphous ribbon in the as-quenched state and after relaxation is presented. In the as-quenched state, the morphology of the crack surface shows a 'vein pattern' structure that corresponds to a large amount of plastic flow. After relaxation the surface morphology of the crack shows that when the temperature of the thermal annealing increases the plastic flow involved in the crack decreases. In the as-quenched state dynamic fracture characteristics (crack branching and stress wave induced crack) have been observed. These dynamic characteristics have not been observed in the relaxed samples but in the samples annealed at 250 °C for 20 min apart from the main crack, a crack along the width of the ribbon has been observed. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Improving co-development through process alignment

There has been a recent surge of enthusiasm icithin tlie automotive industry to build closer supplier relationships idthin the area of product development. One concept deemed central to these relationships is the alignment of development processes between the collaborating organizations, an area that is expanded upon idthin this paper. We suggest that synchronization can be achieved through the four key steps of process standardization, knowledge sliaring, alignment of existing practices, and continuous elimination oftcaste idthin the joint development cycles. A methodology for implementing these stages is presented along idth the underlying prindples on which it is based - the importance of joint teamworking and multi-company involvement idthin the alignment process is higlilighted. © MCB University Press.
