Contemporary medical science is reliant upon the rational selection and utilization of devices, and therefore, an increasing need has developed for in vitro systems aimed at replicating the conditions to which urological devices will be subjected to during their use in vivo. We report the development and validation of a novel continuous flow encrustation model based on the commercially available CDC biofilm reactor. Proteus mirabilis-induced encrustation formation on test biomaterial sections under varying experimental parameters was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, infrared- and Raman spectroscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. The model system produced encrusted deposits similar to those observed in archived clinical samples. Results obtained for the system are highly reproducible with encrustation being rapidly deposited on test biomaterial sections. This model will have utility in the rapid screening of encrustation behavior of biomaterials for use in urological applications. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals. Inc. We aimed to evaluate the classification of arm circumference (AC) in pre-school children by using National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS/CDC-2000) and World Health Organization (WHO-2006) references. We evaluated 205 children: weight, height and AC were assessed and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. The BMI values were classified into Z-scores by the WHO referential. The AC was classified into Z-cores by two references, comparing the whole-sample value and among groups (tercis) of BMI Z-score. The correlation was also evaluated between differences of AC with BMI Z-score. The WHO referential classified the AC in Z-scores greater than the NCHS/CDC, which is more specific and less sensitive than the NCHS/CDC for lean children and at the same time more sensitive and less specific for children with overweight. In conclusion, a significant difference in the AC classification occurs according to the referential used.

Physical activity is an important health-promoting behavior to prevent and control chronic disease. Interventions to increase physical activity are vitally needed. Women are not meeting the recommended goals for physical activity - a behavior that has been shown to effectively reduce the incidence of chronic disease and the medical costs associated with treating it. Among many factors predicting physical activity and the different forms of interventions that have been applied, physician counseling is one potentially cost-effective approach that may produce at least modest effects on women's behavior. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published standards for physician counseling of patients regarding physical activity. This study used a short questionnaire to assess the degree to which a group practice of cardiology physicians in Texas queried and discussed physical activity recommendations to older women that they treat and whether they are meeting the physical activity counseling goals of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of this group of physicians counseled patients without benefit of exploring patient behavior. Although these physicians "agreed" that physical activity delayed or prevented disease, the outcome suggests that low self-efficacy hampered efforts to counsel older women on this. Physicians' perceptions that counseling may be ineffective could explain the lower rate of physical activity counseling that does not meet the goals of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ^
