Composition and distribution of megabenthic communities around Svalbard were investigated in June/July 1991 with 20 Agassiz trawl and 5 bottom trawl hauls in depths between 100 and 2100 m. About 370 species, ranging from sponges to fish, were identified in the catches. Species numbers per station ranged from 21 to 86. Brittle stars, such as Ophiacantha bidentata, Ophiura sarsi and Ophiocten sericeum, were most important in terms of constancy and relative abundance in the catches. Other prominent faunal elements were eunephthyid alcyonarians, bivalves, shrimps, sea stars and fish (Gadidae, Zoarcidae, Cottidae). Multivariate analyses of the species and environmental data sets showed that the spatial distribution of the megabenthos was characterized by a pronounced depth zonation: abyssal, bathyal, off-shore shelf and fjordic communities were discriminated. However, a gradient in sediment properties, especially the organic carbon content, seemed to superimpose on the bathymetric pattern. Both main factors are interpreted as proxies of the average food availability, which is, hence, suggested to have the strongest influence in structuring megabenthic communities off Svalbard.

One of the key objectives of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Leg 75 was to shed light on the underlying causes of Cretaceous oceanic anoxia in the South Atlantic by addressing two major hypotheses: productivity productivity-driven anoxia vs. enhanced ocean stratification leading to preservation of organic matter and black shale deposition. Here we present a detailed geochemical dataset from sediments deposited during the Cenomanian/Turonian (C/T) transition and the global oceanic anoxic event 2 (OAE 2) at DSDP Site 530A, located off-shore Namibia (southeast Angola Basin, north of Walvis Ridge). To characterise the succession of alternating black and green shales at this site and to reconstruct the evolution of their paleoenvironmental setting, we have combined data derived from investigations on bulk organic matter, biomarkers and the inorganic fraction. The location of the C/T boundary itself is biostratigraphically not well constrained due to the carbonate-poor (but organic matter-rich) facies of these sediments. The bulk d13Corg record and compound-specific d13C data, in combination with published as well as new biostratigraphic data, enabled us to locate more precisely the C/T boundary at DSDP Site 530A. The compound-specific d13C record is the first of this kind reported from C/T black shales in the South Atlantic. It is employed for paleoenvironmental reconstructions and chemostratigraphic correlation to other C/T sections in order to discuss the paleoceanographic aspects and implications of the observations at DSDP Site 530A in a broader context, e.g., with regard to the potential trigger mechanisms of OAE 2, global changes in black shale deposition and climate. On a stratigraphic level, an approximation and monitoring of the syndepositional degree of oxygen depletion within the sediments/bottom waters in comparison to the upper water column is achieved by comparing normalised concentrations of redox-sensitive trace elements with the abundance of highly source specific molecular compounds. These biomarkers are derived from photoautotrophic and simultaneously anoxygenic green sulphur bacteria (Chlorobiacea) and are interpreted as paleoindicators for events of photic zone euxinia. In contrast to a number of other OAE 2 sections that are characterised by continuous black shale sequences, DSDP Site 530A represents a highly dynamic setting where newly deposited black shales were repeatedly exposed to conditions of subtle bottom water re-oxidation, presumably leading to their progressive alteration into green shales. The frequent alternation between both facies and the related anoxic to slight oxygenated conditions can be best explained by variations in vertical extent of an oxygen minimum zone in response to changes in a highly productive western continental margin setting driven by upwelling.

A primary objective of Leg 175 was to investigate the upwelling history of the Benguela Current. Upwelling along the coast is found over the shelf in several well-established cells, as well as along the shelf-slope break, and extends over the 1000-m isobath. Streaming filaments along the coast also carry upwelled water off shore (Shannon, 1985). The upwelled nutrient-rich waters are sourced from the South Atlantic central water mass, which is a mixture of subtropical and subantarctic water masses. Below the central water mass lies Antarctic intermediate water (Shannon and Hunter, 1988, doi:10.2989/025776188784480735; Stramma and Peterson, 1989, doi:10.1175/1520-0485(1989)019<1440:GTITBC>2.0.CO;2). The upwelling system supports a robust marine community (Shannon and Pillar, 1986) where radiolarians are abundant (Bishop et al., 1978, doi:10.1016/0146-6291(78)90010-3). The endemic nature of radiolarians makes them useful in reconstructing the paleocirculation patterns. The biogeographic distribution of many species is limited by water-mass distribution. In a given geographic region, species may also have discrete depth habitats. However, their depth of occurrence can change worldwide because the depths of water masses vary with latitude (Boltovskoy, 1999). Consequently, species found at shallow depths at high latitudes (cold-water fauna) are observed deeper in the water column at lower latitudes. The low-latitude submergence of cold-water species broadens their distribution, resulting in species distributions that can cover multiple geographic regions (Kling, 1976, doi:10.1016/0011-7471(76)90880-9; Casey, doi:10.1016/0031-0182(89)90017-5; 1971; Boltovskoy, 1987, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(87)90014-4). Since radiolarian distribution is closely related to water-mass distribution and controlled by climatic conditions rather than geographic regions, similar assemblages characterize the equatorial, subtropical, transition, subpolar, and polar regions of ocean basins (Petrushevskaya, 1971a; Casey, 1989, doi:10.1016/0031-0182(89)90017-5; Boltovskoy, 1999). Numerous radiolarian species found in water masses in the Angola and Benguela Current systems have also been observed in plankton net samples, sediment traps, and surface-sediment studies in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, where they exhibited particular water-mass affinities (Abelmann, 1992a, doi:10.1007/BF00243107; Abelmann 1992b, doi:10.1007/BF00243108; Abelmann and Gowing, 1997, doi:10.1016/S0377-8398(96)00021-7). This report presents data on the radiolarian fauna recovered from Site 1082 sediments in the form of a survey of species reflecting the latitudinal migration of the Angola-Benguela Front and upwelling. The data constitute a time series of relative radiolarian abundances at very high resolution (every 20 cm) of the upper 12 m of Hole 1082A.

A comparative estimation of particulate organic matter concentration in seawater in various regions of the Barents Sea was carried out on the basis of materials collected by authors in August-September 1997. It is shown that the major feature of near-bottom distribution of particulate organic matter is distinct decrease in its concentration from off-shore areas of the Murman and Novaya Zemlya coasts and the Franz Josef Land Archipelago toward the central part of the Barents Sea. Using a method of mean and maximum concentrations of particulate organic matter, an attempt was made to estimate its fluxes from the surface to the bottom.

Organic carbon, lead and cadmium contents of 20 sediments were determined and compared with the colony counts of anaerobic heterotrophic, anaerobic nitrogen fixing, chitinoclastic and cellulolytic bacteria. Organic carbon content, which is dependent on the sediment type, was positively correlated with lead and cadmium as well as with colony counts of all 4 physiological groups of bacteria. Even the sediments with the highest concentrations of 251.7 ppm Pb and 3.1 ppm Cd showed no reduction in their colony counts. From 2 different sediment sampIes with lead contents of 140 ppm and 21 ppm lead tolerance of the aerobic heterotrophic bacteria was investigated. However, no significant difference in lead tolerance of the 2 heterotrophic populations was found. Water from 6 stations was analysed for dissolved and particulate organic carbon, lead and cadmium. Dissolved lead concentrations were in the range of 0.2-0.5 µg/l and the particulate lead contents were between 0.05 and 4.3 µg/l. The concentrations of total lead for the stations off-shore were only one order of magnitude from the concentrations of the near-shore stations. The same phenomenon was observed for dissolved cadmium (0.02 - 0.25 µg/l) and particulate cadmium (0.003 - 0.15 µg/I) concentrations. Correlations between dissolved (1.6 - 10.8 mg/I) and particulate organic carbon (0.25 - 1.53 mg/I) with dissolved and particulate lead or cadmium were not found.

In 1937 the "Meteor" performed the cruises of the first part of the "Deutsche Nordatlantische Expedition". This publication treats seven stations of three-day-anchoring occupied during that time, five of which are located on the shelf, one on the continental slope and one on a ridge between the Capverde islands. The Bohnecke current meter, an instrument developed for the expedition, is described briefly and it's accuracy studied by comparing the measurements of two instruments which operated simultaneously at the same depth. It is shown that it is very sensitive for movements of the anchored ship because of the very short measuring intervall (2 minutes). The influence of the ship's movements could not be eliminated completely, the mode of using the instrument at different depths being unsuitable for this. Considering the stratification the accuracy of it's representation by the mean temperature and salinity distributionis studied. It is shown that under certain conditions a distribution estimated from observed values gives more exact results. This especially applies to the TS-diagram. Station Meteor336, located on the shelf near Cape Juby, shows temperatures 4 °C less than the open ocean and so belongs to the area of upwelling. During the observation period, however, internal tides are prominent. The diurnal component is of considerable influence, the distinction from inertial oscillations (25.5 hours) not being possible, however. Station Meteor341, on the shelf off Spanish-Sahara, gives an excellent example of the movements in the centre of the area of upwelling. Changing it's direction by 45° at the beginning of the measurements, the wind causes a change of current direction at all depths which, after some inertial oscillations (period 28.3 hours), settles down to a final value. At the beginning and the end of the observations the current at the upper depths is directed off-shore, the angle between current and wind being 22°, while at the lower depths it is orientated towards the shore. The depth of the upper homogenous layer gives the origin of the water transported upwards When during the inertial oscillations the current goes offshore at all depths temporarily, a sudden disturbance occurs in the temperature measurements. Station Meteor311 is located similar to station Meteor341 but was occupied one month earlier. At that time the wind situation was unnormal, the usual wind direction of 45° occuring at the end of the station. Therefore an unnormally high vertical shear of current speed and direction has been observed, the current vector being directed off-shore at the surface and near the bottom, towards the coast inbetween. The TS-diagram shows that the bottom water is replaced first so that upwelling does not occur during observation time. The state reached at the end of the station does not seem to be stable. Station Meteor369, on the continental slope, is governed by internal waves. Besides the internal tide of 12.4 hours a wave of 6.5 hour period is observed, being possibly amplified by the large bottom slope. In 40 - 60 m depth, where the thermocline is located, a wave with 3.3 hour period is observed which is argued to be an internal boundary wave. Station Meteor334 is located on the shelf NW of the mouth of the Senegal river. A marked temperature stratification, associated with large disturbances, and nearly constant salinity have been found there. The current was going slowly towards S or SW in the upper 20 - 30 m, towards N underneath. At the boundary of the current systems intense turbulence developed, including as it seems a water type of less salinity which is transported from the Senegal river by the lower current. Station Meteor327, located at 100 m depth between two of the Capverde islands, shows oceanic characteristics. The semidiurnal tide is found mainly, the diurnal component having considerable influence. Furtheron an internal wave of 6 hour period is seen the maximum amplitude of which is moving slowly downwards. Two possibilities of explaining it are discussed. Station Meteor366 is found in the area of ceasing winds off the coast of upper Guinea. The temperature there depends strongly on the depth, the salinity being nearly constant. The currents are divided into an upper and a lower system with large variations in both of them. A change of wind direction of nearly 90° is supposed to be the reason. The variations in salinity accordingly are interpreted as the influence of fresh water outflow from land which is felt in a different way at different wind directions. In the last section the daily changes in air and water temperature are studied. The upwelling having large influence on these, a centre of the area of upwelling can be located at about 100 miles north of Cape Blanc (Station Meteor311). The semidiurnal tidal component is compared with previous results for the Atlantic Ocean yielding considerable differences for the direction and time of occurence of the current maximum which might be due to the topographical influences around the shelf.

We present a remote sensing observational method for the measurement of the spatio-temporal dynamics of ocean waves. Variational techniques are used to recover a coherent space-time reconstruction of oceanic sea states given stereo video imagery. The stereoscopic reconstruction problem is expressed in a variational optimization framework. There, we design an energy functional whose minimizer is the desired temporal sequence of wave heights. The functional combines photometric observations as well as spatial and temporal regularizers. A nested iterative scheme is devised to numerically solve, via 3-D multigrid methods, the system of partial differential equations resulting from the optimality condition of the energy functional. The output of our method is the coherent, simultaneous estimation of the wave surface height and radiance at multiple snapshots. We demonstrate our algorithm on real data collected off-shore. Statistical and spectral analysis are performed. Comparison with respect to an existing sequential method is analyzed.

For the past 20 years, dynamic analysis of shells has been one of the most fascinating fields for research. Using the new light materials the building engineer soon discovered that the subsequent reduction of gravity forces produced not only the desired shape freedom but the appearance of ecologic loads as the first factor of design; loads which present strong random properties and marked dynamic influence. On the other hand, the technological advance in the aeronautical and astronautical field placed the engineers in front of shell structures of nonconventional shape and able to sustain substantialy dynamic loads. The response to the increasingly challenger problems of the last two decades has been very bright; new forms, new materials and new methods of analysis have arosen in the design of off-shore platforms, nuclear vessels, space crafts, etc. Thanks to the intensity of the lived years we have at our disposition a coherent and homogeneous amount of knowledge which enable us to face problems of inconceivable complexity when IASS was founded. The open minded approach to classical problems and the impact of the computer are, probably, important factors in the Renaissance we have enjoyed these years, and a good proof of this are the papers presented to the previous IASS meetings as well as that we are going to consider in this one. Particularly striking is the great number of papers based on a mathematical modeling in front of the meagerness of those treating laboratory experiments on physical models. The universal entering of the computer into almost every phase of our lifes, and the cost of physical models, are –may be- reasons for this lack of experimental methods. Nevertheless they continue offering useful results as are those obtained with the shaking-table in which the computer plays an essential role in the application of loads as well as in the instantaneous treatment of control data. Plates 1 and 2 record the papers presented under dynamic heading, 40% of them are from Japan in good correlation with the relevance that Japanese research has traditionally showed in this area. Also interesting is to find old friends as profesors Tanaka, Nishimura and Kostem who presented valuable papers in previous IASS conferences. As we see there are papers representative of all tendencies, even purely analytical! Better than discuss them in detail, which can be done after the authors presentation, I think we can comment in the general pattern of the dynamical approach are summarized in plate 3.

The OMNIWORKS project objective is to develop an autonomous and modular aerial inspection system for an off-shore meteorological mast up to 90m in length. The UAV was equipped with an omni-directional camera and vertical take-off/landing capabilities that should be simple enough to operate as to not need the interventions of a professional pilot under challenging situations. Therefore the tests included different aspects used to evaluate both the technical performance of the UAV behavior as well as the operators? point of view.

We combined the analysis of sediment trap data and satellite-derived sea surface chlorophyll to quantify the amount of organic carbon export to the deep sea in the upwelling induced high production area off northwest Africa. In contrast to the generally global or basin-wide adoption of export models, we used a regionally fitted empirical model. Furthermore, the application of our model was restricted to a dynamically defined region of high chlorophyll concentration in order to restrict the model application to an environment of more homogeneous export processes. We developed a correlation-based approximation to estimate the surface source area for a sediment trap deployed from 11 June 1998 to 7 November 1999 at 21.25°N latitude and 20.64°W longitude off Cape Blanc. We also developed a regression model of chlorophyll and export of organic carbon to the 1000 m depth level. Carbon export was calculated for an area of high chlorophyll concentration (>1 mg/m**3) adjacent to the coast on a daily basis. The resulting zone of high chlorophyll concentration was 20,000-800,000 km**2 large and yielded a yearly export of 1.123 to 2.620 Tg organic carbon. The average organic carbon export within the area of high chlorophyll concentration was 20.6 mg/m**2d comparable to 13.3 mg/m**2d as found in the sediment trap results if normalized to the 1000 m level. We found strong interannual variability in export. The period autumn 1998 to summer 1999 was exceeding the mean of the other three comparable periods by a factor of 2.25. We believe that this approach of using more regionally fitted models can be successfully transferred even to different oceanographic regions by selecting appropriate definition criteria like chlorophyll concentration for the definition of an area to which it is applicable.

Bonefish (Albula spp.) support an economically important catch-and-release recreational fishery, as well as artisanal harvesting, in The Bahamas. Little is known about the large-scale movement patterns of bonefish, yet such information is essential for proper species conservation and management. ^ I used acoustic telemetry to determine large-scale movement patterns of bonefish around Andros, Bahamas, in conjunction with presumed spawning migrations. I conclude that bonefish travel long distances from shallow flats to pre-spawning aggregation sites in proximity to off-shore reef locations. Off-shore movement to deeper reef locations occurs around both new and full moons. This study has also confirmed anecdotal reports that the North Bight is an important spawning migration corridor for bonefish. ^ This information is critical for the protection of bonefish and identifies important habitats (e.g. migration corridors and pre-spawning aggregations) on Andros that warrant protection from coastal degradation or fishing pressures. ^
