Hemiodus jatuarana, a new species of the Hemiodontidae from Oriximina, rio Trombetas, Amazon Basin, Brazil, is described. The new species can be readily distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a horizontally elongated dark spot on the caudal peduncle, and by the absence of any other dark pigmentation pattern on the body. Hemiodus jatuarana is readily separated from H. immaculatus, another species without dark pigmentation on the body, by having 25 - 27 epibranchial and 36 - 37 ceratobranchial gill rakers on the first branchial arch, and caudal-fin lobes without longitudinal stripes, vs. 14 - 16 and 21 - 25 gill rakers, and a conspicuous longitudinal stripe on each caudalfin lobe in H. immaculatus. The new species is only known from its type-locality, where it cooccurs with H. immaculatus.

The mitotic chromosomes and nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) of the Upper Parana Basin fish Pyrrhulina cf. australis were studied. The karyotype (2n = 40; 6st + 34a) is characterized by the presence of four chromosome pairs with NORs, one of them with NORs in both terminal regions. Comparison of this karyotype with those of other Characiformes, revealed a strong similarity to the family Erythrinidae.

The genus Erythrinus belongs to the family Erythrinidae, a neotropical fish group. This genus contains only two described species, Erythrinus erythrinus being the most widely distributed in South America. Six samples of this species from five distinct Brazilian localities and one from Argentina were studied cytogenetically. Four groups were identified on the basis of their chromosomal features. Group A comprises three samples, all with 2n = 54 chromosomes, a very similar karyotypic structure, and the absence of chromosome differentiation between males and females. One sample bears up to four supernumerary microchromosomes, which look like 'double minute chromosomes' in appearance. Groups B - D comprise the three remaining samples, all sharing an X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y sex chromosome system. Group B shows 2n = 54/53 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, and also shows up to three supernumerary microchromosomes. Groups C and D show 2n = 52/51 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, but differ in the number of metacentric, subtelocentric, and acrocentric chromosomes. In these three groups ( B - D), the Y is a metacentric chromosome clearly identified as the largest in the complement. The present results offer clear evidence that local samples of E. erythrinus retain exclusive and fixed chromosomal features, indicating that this species may represent a species complex.

The endomembranous system of Serrasalmus spilopleura oocyte secondary growth was analysed using structural and ultrastructural cytochemical techniques. In vitellogenic oocytes, the endoplasmic reticulum components, the nuclear envelope intermembranous space, some Golgi dictiossomes, lysosomes, yolk granules, regions of the egg envelope and sites of the follicle cells react to acid phosphatase detection (AcPase). The cortical alveoli, some heterogeneous cytoplasmic structures, regions of the egg envelope, and sites of the follicle cells are strongly contrasted by osmium tetroxide and zinc iodide impregnation (ZIO). The endoplasmic reticulum components, some vesicles, and sites of the follicle cells also react to osmium tetroxide and potassium iodide impregnation (KI). The biosynthetic pathway of lysosomal proteins, such as acid phosphatase, required for vitellogenesis, involves the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, vesicles with inactive hydrolytic enzymes, and, finally, lysosomes. In S. spilopleura oocytes at secondary growth, the endomembranous system takes part in the production of the enzymes needed for vitellogenesis, and in the metabolism of yolk exogenous components (AcPase detection). The endomembranous system compartments also show reduction capacity (KI reaction) and are involved in the metabolism of proteins rich in SH-groups (ZIO reaction).

Identifying the biotic and abiotic factors that determine the variation in the distribution and abundance of populations has become a great challenge for the field of ecology in recent years. Thus, in this study we evaluated the effect of abiotic variables and the abundance of predators on the abundance of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, the variation in the average length of the individuals between lakes and periods, and the effect of the abiotic variables and abundance of predators on the structure in length of that species. Sixteen lakes of the Cuiaba river flood plain were sampled in June (drying period), September (dry period) and December (flooding period) 2005 and March (flood period) 2006. For M. sanctaefilomenae, the distribution is ampler and the abundance is greater at the end of the drying period, beginning of dry season, reducing gradually over the periods of dry, drying and flood season. Additionally, the period affects the structure in size of the populations that are spatially homogeneous. Smaller individuals were captured at the end of the drying period and the larger individuals at the start of flooding. During the end of the drying period and in the beginning of the dry season, the spatial variation in the abundance of the population was positively related with pH, dissolved oxygen and macrophyte cover and area of the lake, but not with the local abundance of predators in the littoral zone of the lakes.

Cytogenetic studies performed on 17 specimens (11 females and six males) of Astyanax scabripinnis paranae from the Cascatinha stream showed that this population has 2n = 50 chromosomes (8M + 22SM + 10ST + 10A), two chromosome pairs with NORs and conspicuous C-band positive blocks in the terminal position of the long arm of five chromosome pairs. Three females presented 2n = 51 chromosomes and the extra chromosome was a large metacentric similar in size and morphology to the first chromosome pair in the karyotype. This accessory chromosome was entirely heterochromatic in C-banded metaphases, which permitted its classification as a supernumerary chromosome. Some aspects related to the morphology of such macro B-chromosomes are discussed.

Cytogenetic studies of three species of the subfamily Glandulocaudinae showed that Mimagoniates microlepis presents 2n = 52 chromosomes (6M + 20SM + 18ST + 8A), Mimagoniates lateralis presents 2n = 52 chromosomes (6M + 20SM + 16ST + 10A) and Glandalocauda melanogenys presents 2n = 52 chromosomes (4M + 12SM + 22ST + 14A). The number of NOR-bearing chromosome pairs ranged from two to four. Differences in number and position of NORs at the species and population levels were detected, suggesting that several chromosome rearrangements occurred in the evolutionary process of this group. Some aspects related to the chromosome evolution of the Glandulocaudinae are discussed.

A new hemiodontid species, Hemiodus tocantinensis, is described from the rio Tocantins, Amazon basin, Brazil. It is most closely related to H. ternezi and H. thayeria based on the presence of a dark longitudinal stripe extending from behind the eye or the opercle to the tip of lower caudal fin lobe but is distinguished by the possession of 51 to 58 perforated lateral line scales and an oblique dark blotch on the dorsal fin extending from its anterior distal portion through the middle basal portion of the fin. The evolution of color patterns and tooth shapes present in the Hemiodus species is commented.

Oocyte secondary growth in S. spiloleura corresponds to the period in which different vesicular structures are formed, including the cortical alveoli and the yolk granules. The oocytes with cortical alveolus formation show vesicular structures with filamentous content in the cortical cytoplasmic region, which are the cortical alveolus precursors. In these oocytes, electron-dense vesicles of heterogenous content are dispersed in the inner cytoplasmic region and their nuclei are irregular, showing many nucleoli of different sizes. The oocytes in vitellogenesis are filled with many vesicles. The cortical alveolus precursors are in the peripheral region, and electron-dense granules are seen near to the nucleus. These fuse and form yolk granules. The oocytes in vitellogenesis show a very irregular nucleus that has nucleoli of different sizes. In the oocytes in final vitellogenesis, the yolk granules are scattered throughout the cytoplasm, displacing the cortical alveoli toward cell periphery. The nucleus is similar to the other stages.

The subfamily Tetragonopterinae is composed by a large number of species distributed in South and Central America. This subfamily has many taxonomic and phylogenetic problems, being considered by several authors as an artificial group. With the objective to better understanding the relationships among the components of this fish group, cytogenetic studies were conduced on five species of Tetragonopterinae. Astyanax janeiroensis had 2n=50 chromosomes (6M+14SM+14ST+16A), Hyphessobrycon reticulatus had 2n=50 chromosomes (14M+20SM+16ST), Hollandichthys multifasciatus had 2n=50 chromosomes (10M+12SM+28ST), Ctenobrycon hauxwellianus had 2n=50 chromosomes (10M+6SM+34ST), and Phenacogaster cf. pectinatus had 2n=46 chromosomes (12M+2ST+32A). Only A. janeiroensis had multiple NORs, while all other species had simple NORs. Small heterochromatic blocks were observed in the chromosomes of all species in a pericentromeric position. A. janeiroensis also had some chromosomes with large heterochromatic blocks in a terminal position and a pair with an interstitial block. The karyotypic evolution of each genus is discussed.

Different cytogenetic techniques were used to analyze the chromosomes of Characidium gomesi with the main objective of comparing the base composition of ZZ/ZW sex-chromosomes, B-chromosomes and the heterochromatin of A-chromosomes. The results of digestion of chromosomes with AluI restriction endonuclease (RE), silver and CMA3 staining, C-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with the 18S rDNA probe suggested the existence of compositional differences between the heterochromatin of ZZ/ZW sex-chromosomes, A- and B-chromosomes, and indicated the presence of different numbers and morphology of B-chromosomes in the samples of this population.

Henochilus, a characiform genus endemic to eastern Brazil is reviewed. A single species, Henochilus wheatlandii, from the Rio Doce and possibly the Rio Mucuri in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo is recognized and redescribed. The phylogenetic analysis indicates that Henochilus is most closely related to the clade consisting of Brycon and likely Chilobrycon.
