Pythiosis is a subcutaneous infection caused by aquatic fungi (Pythium insidiosum) which occurs in some animal species, as human beings. This paper describes an Quarter Horse, breed in Pernambuco, Brazil, who had this infection. The horse presented nodular and ulcerated lesions only in nasal mucosa and the diagnosis was made by histopathologic analysis and clinical signals. Based in the histopathologic findings and anamneses information by the owner the authors believed this is an atypical presentation of this infection caused by the contact with water offered at stable.

Aspectos nutricionais de farinhas de vísceras de aves e sua utilização em rações de frangos de corte

In the process of slaughtering chickens, parts of them are discarded because are unfit for human consumption. These wastes should be directed to a destination that does not promote any risk to the environment and above all, according with the laws regulating waste disposal. So, the wastes are transformed into byproducts for utilization in the animal nutrition, poultry and swine feeding, but cannot use for ruminant feed, only non-ruminant feeding. In Brazil, the first scientific studies on the use of by-products of poultry slaughter as a protein source in diets for broiler chickens were started in the 1960's, and these results were used for a long time for food formulation, but the need to improve the herds stimulated the search for improvement in technologies for more accurate diet formulations. The objective of this article is to review some aspects of the physic-chemical composition, energy values and their use in diets for broilers.

Avaliação morfométrica dos hepatócitos de ratos diabéticos tratados com neem (azadirachta indica a. juss) e estreptozootocina 6 ch

The effects of extracts from Azadirachta indica A. Juss and streptozotocin, in extreme high dilutions in dinamized systems, on hepatocyte morphometry of rats with diabetes mellitus induced by streptozotocin were evaluated. Some parameters presented significant differences among the experimental groups, but the effect of treatments to make better or worse the consequences of diabetes mellitus on liver was not detected using only the hepatocyte morphometry. The morphometric analysis evidenced that the white control group presented the highest mean values for nucleus and cytoplasm parameters, with the exception of the nuclear shape factor. However, this situation did not imply the diabetes mellitus was the cause of drastic reduction in these values, since the literature describes lower measurements for rats from the control group (non-diabetic rats).

Mammary benign neoplasm diagnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)

Cytology is a well established research technique in human and veterinary medicine, but it is rarely used in small rodents. Spontaneous tumors are relatively uncommon in guinea pigs and those described in literature include a variety of organs like skin and subcutis, respiratory and reproductive tract, endocrine and hematopoietic system, and mammary gland. The objective of this article was to describe the use of the fine needle aspiration biopsy technique (FNAB) on evaluation of a mammary neoplasm in a guinea pig and describe the main cytological findings for the first time in literature.

Utilização de implantes para o manejo de cavidades anoftálmicas

The implants are usually used after removal of the eye or its internal content, in order to maintain the orbital volume or, as in medicine, provide also the subsequent placement of ocular prosthesis. Considering prosthetic surgery procedures of high relevance in human and veterinary ophthalmology, this paper seek to review the main types of implants described in national and international literature, as well as describe the main complications when they are used in humans and veterinary patients.

Osteossarcoma mandibular em gato: Relato de Caso

The primary malignant bone tumors are uncommon in cats. Osteosarcoma is the most frequently observed in old animals. This tumors affects the appendicular skeleton, however the axial skeleton is also affected, but the bones of the head and pelvis frequent sites of injury. This paper reports a case of a cat with a history of progressive swelling in the left mandible, with follow-up period of four months. The presumptive diagnosis of osteopathy, signed by clinical and radiographic observations were confirmed by histopathology and there it is moderately productive osteoblastic osteosarcoma.

Hemangiossarcoma cardíaco em cão: Relato de caso

Cardiac tumors are relatively rare in dogs, being hemangiosarcoma (HAS) the most common neoplasia. It consists in a primary, endothelial-originated neoplasia, which frequently compromises the right atrium. The pericardial effusion, frequently identified in dogs with heart HSA is responsible for the clinical signs, such as lethargy, exercise intolerance, dyspnea, and syncope. The diagnosis is difficult and suggested mainly by the clinic, hematologic, radiographic and echocardiographic findings, and was confirmed by histopathological examination. The present study aimed to report the presence of a heart HSA in a seven year old, spayed dog presented with signs of a congestive heart failure, due to the presence of a pericardial effusion secondary to tumor, and also lung, liver and spleen metastases. Despite this uncommon association a cardiac tumor should be suspected when signs of a heart failure, with rapid decline in the clinical status abruptly occurs.

Detecção de anticorpos anti-Toxoplasma gondii em cavalos carroceiros da região metropolitana de Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil

Toxoplasma gondii, the agent for toxoplasmosis, has worldwide distribution. Horses normally play a secondary role in its life cycle, but movement around urban areas, feeding on grass and the increasing use of carthorses for gathering recyclable material in some urban areas of Brazil may increase their exposure to T. gondii infection. The aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of anti-T. gondii antibodies in carthorses in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, PR. IgG antibodies against T. gondii were detected using the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) (titers ≥ 64). Seventeen (17.0%) of the 100 horses sampled were seropositive. There were no statistical differences in relation to sex (p = 0.28) or age (p = 0.15). Our findings suggest that carthorses are exposed to T. gondii infections and that no associations with age or sex exist.

Determinação do teor de extrato etéreo de grãos de oleaginosas através de diferentes processamentos

The objective of this work was to determine the ether extract content of peanut and canola seeds, with extraction in Soxhlet apparatus and with three types of processing: grinding in ball mill type; maceration in mortar and grind into micro mill after maceration in mortar. Data were analyzed in an entirely randomized design with 3 treatments and 12 replicates, submitted to variance analysis and the means were compared using Tukey test (P<0.05) with routines of the SAS statistical package. The largest percentage of ether extract was obtained in the treatment which the peanuts were subjected to a greater number of extractions (56.43%), and all treatments presented different results(P <0.05). In canola grains, it was observed that the extraction with the method of grinding in ball mill and the method of sequential extraction (macerate + ground in micro mill) were statistically similar (43.52 and 42.35% respectively), and these methods were more efficient (P <0.05) to extract the ether extract than the treatment in which the grains were only macerated. For peanut grains it was concluded that the most efficient method was the sequential one and to the canola grain, it can be used only a grinding mill as samples processing witch will be submitted to ether extract extraction.
