The presence of lingual papillae and the nerve endings in the middle region of the tongue mucosa of collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) were studied using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, based upon the silver impregnation method. The middle region of tongue mucosa revealed numerous filiform and fungiform papillae. The thick epithelial layer showed epithelial cells and a dense connective tissue layer containing nerve fibre bundles and capillaries. The sensory nerve endings, intensely stained by silver impregnation, were usually non-encapsulated and extended into the connective tissue of the filiform and fungiform papillae very close to the epithelial cells. In some regions, the sensory nerves fibres formed a dense and complex network of fine fibrils. The presence of these nerve fibrils may characterize the mechanisms of transmission of sensitive impulses to the tongue mucosa.

Background: There is general consensus that the effects of intrinsic aging on the oral mucosa are relatively small, though potentially important to understanding the pathologies present in the aged animals. Objective: In this paper, the development of dorsal surface of rat tongue was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) in order to understand the age-related structural and ultrastructural changes experimentally. Methods: In this study, we used female rats 75 and 720 days old (adult and aging). Tissues of rat tongue were prepared and the specimens submitted to HRSEM and TEM techniques. Results: The analysis of HRSEM and TEM demonstrated that the same characteristic keratinous epithelium was found in aging animals, however with some modifications. Conclusion: We agree that there are obvious changes in the oral mucosa with aging and these modifications can be observed starting from the ultrastructural aspects. Copyright (C) 2009 S. A low-cost method is proposed to classify wine and whisky samples using a disposable voltammetric electronic tongue that was fabricated using gold and copper substrates and a pattern recognition technique (Principal Component Analysis). The proposed device was successfully used to discriminate between expensive and cheap whisky samples and to detect adulteration processes using only a copper electrode. For wines, the electronic tongue was composed of copper and gold working electrodes and was able to classify three different brands of wine and to make distinctions regarding the wine type, i.e., dry red, soft red, dry white and soft white brands.

The participation of the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle and anterior belly of the digastric muscle in tongue and head movements was studied eletromyographically in 20 normal young volunteers. A pair of monopolar electrodes was used in each muscle for simultaneous recording of their actions. The muscles act in the following tongue movements: protrusion, right and left lateral movements, placement of the tip of the tongue on soft and hard palates and on the floor of the mouth. The strongest levels of activity of the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle were observed in the placement of the tip of the tongue on the soft palate, coincidentally with a greater dislocation of hyoid bone. Both of the muscles studied did not participate in the head's kinesiology. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Introduction: Head and neck cancers are linked to smoking. The most affected sites are the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx. Experimental studies show epithelial lesions caused by cigarette smoke. Objectives: To investigate in rats the effects of acute cigarette smoke exposure on the mucosa of the tongue, pharynx and larynx.Material and method: Wistar rats were allocated into two groups of 20 animals: CG (control) receiving food and water ad libitum and TG (Tobacco) exposed to the smoke of 40 cigarettes/day for 60 days. Biopsy of their tongues, pharynxes and larynxes were subjected to histopathological, histomorphometric and immunohistochemical studies of protein p53 and ki-67.Result: The histological analysis of tongue from the Tobacco group revealed epithelial hyperplasia (90%), basal cell hyperplasia (95%) and mild to moderate dysplasia (85%). In pharynx showed basal cell hyperplasia (85%), dysplasia (25%) and vascular congestion (95%). In larynx showed basal cell hyperplasia (70%), epithelial hyperplasia (55%), congestion (100%) and inflammatory infiltrate (25%). Morphometric analysis revealed that keratin layer thickness was greater in the tobacco group. P53 immunoexpression was negative in both groups. Ki-67 immunoexpression was positive in basal cell nuclei but in parabasal cell nuclei it was positive only in the Tobacco group. Conclusions: The exposure of animals to cigarette smoke for 60 days resulted in benign lesions. The duration of exposure was not enough to cause the development cancer, as confirmed by the negative expression of p53 protein in all slides examined. Analysis of ki-67 expression showed intense epithelial proliferation in response to damage.

We investigated the changes of minor salivary glands during 4NQO-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis. Histopathological examinations of serous and mucous tongue salivary glands of 30 male Wistar rats were performed after 4, 12 and 20 weeks of 50 ppm 4NQO chronicle administration in drinking water. Ten rats were used as control. Morphometric results were expressed as volume density (Vv %) of each of the components. Histopathological and morphometric changes in the salivary glands were evident only at 20 weeks following 4NQO administration and they included a significant (P < 0.05) decreased in the mean Vv of the serous acini compared with the control group accompanied by abnormal acini (Vv=14 %). Neither mucous acini nor ducts demonstrated significant changes. In conclusion, minor salivary glands are involved in the progression of 4NQO-induced carcinoma.

This study was undertaken to investigate, by immunohistochermistry, the expression of survivin and inducible nitric oxide synthase during 4NQO-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis. Male Wistar rats were distributed into three groups of 10 animals each and treated with 50 ppm 4NQO solution through their drinking water for 4, 12, and 20 weeks. Ten animals were used as negative control. Although no histopathological abnormalities were induced in the epithelium after 4 weeks of carcinogen exposure, survivin and iNOS were expresssed (P < 0.05) in some cells of the 'normal' oral epithelium. In pre-neoplastic lesions at 12 weeks following carcinogen exposure, the levels of survivin and iNOS were increased (p < 0.05) when compared to negative control, being the strongest effect observed to iNOS. In well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma induced after 20 weeks of treatment with 4NQO, survivin and iNOS were expressed in some tumor cells. Lack of immunoreactivity for both markers was observed in the negative control group. Taken together, our results support the belief that expression of survivin and iNOS are early events during malignant transformation and conversion of the oral mucosa. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. 4-Nitroquinotine 1-oxide (4NQO)-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis is a useful model for studying oral squamous cell carcinoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of DNA damage induced by 4NQO in oral mucosa cells by the single cell get (comet) assay. Mate Wistar rats were distributed into three groups of 10 animals each and treated with 50 ppm 4NQO solution by drinking water for 4, 12 or 20 weeks. Ten animals were used as negative control. Statistically significant increase of DNA damage was observed in non-neoplastic oral cells at four weeks of 4NQO administration when compared with control (P < 0.05). The level of DNA damage was directly associated with the severity of histological changes. The results suggest that histologically normal tissue is able to harbor genetically unstable cells contributing to the initiation of oral carcinogenesis. Genomic instability appears to be associated with the risk and progression of oral cancer. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
