The single-phase double perovskites Sr2MWO6 (M=Co, Ni) were prepared by sol-gel method. Crystal Structure, magnetic properties and the morphology of Sr2CoWO6 and Sr2NiWO6 were investigated. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis shows single phase structure for Sr2MWO6 (M=Co, Ni) without any traces of impurities and the crystal structure of all the samples belongs to the tetragonal I4/m space group. SEM image for Sr2MWO6 (M=Co, Ni) indicate that the grains are homogeneous and connect each other very well. The Neel temperature for Sr2CoWO6 and Sr2NiWO6 are 23 K and 59 K, respectively. Magnetic measurements showed that the magnetic moment in these double perovskites originates mainly from the interactions between Ni ions and Co ions.

The aggregate structure of the discotic compound 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxytriphenylene (HPT) was studied both for the crystalline state and the liquid crystalline state by using electron crystallography and a molecular simulation approach. In the crystalline state, HPT was found to adopt an orthorhombic P-2212 space group with cell parameters a = 36.73 Angstrom, b = 27.99 Angstrom and c = 4.91 Angstrom. Molecular packing calculations were conducted to elucidate the molecular conformation and mutual orientational characteristics in the different states. Phase transitions and relationships are discussed from a structural point of view.

The microphase transition in a styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer was studied by rheometric mechanical spectroscopy. A high-temperature-melt rheological transition from the highly elastic, nonlinear viscous behavior typical of a multiphase structure to linear viscous behavior with insignificant elasticity typical of a single-phase structure was observed. The transition temperature is determined according to the discontinuity of the rheological properties across the transition region, which agrees well with the results obtained from the small angle X-ray scattering data and the expectation of the random phase approximation theory. Maybe for the first time, microphase dissolution was investigated theologically. The storage modulus (G') and the loss modulus (G '') increase with time during the process. An entanglement fluctuation model based on the segmental density fluctuations is presented to explain the rheological behavior in this dissolution process. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons.

Scandia and ceria doped zirconia samples, with 10 mol% SC2O3 and different content of CeO2, were synthesized and characterized. The XRD results depict that the sintered samples have a cubic phase structure. However, Raman spectra show that besides the main cubic phase, a secondary phase is also present in the sintered samples. The addition of CeO2 can raise the content of the cubic phase, but the minor metastable tetragonal phase (t'-phase) exists even at the CeO2 content as high as 10 mol%. The near-UV Raman spectra indicate that the deformed tetragonal structure predominates at the grain boundary. The addition of CeO2 can reduce the impurity at grain boundary, and no impurity can be found by near-UV Raman spectroscopy at the grain boundary of the samples with high CeO2 content. The impedance measurements show that with the increase of CeO2 content, the impedance of grain boundary decreases and the bulk impedance increases. The low impedance of grain boundary can be attributed to the formation of a clean grain boundary upon CeO2 doping, and the increase of the bulk impedance is due to the blocking effect of the large Ce(IV) ions. We apply a new X-ray scattering approach to the study of melt-spun filaments of tri-block and random terpolymers prepared from lactide, caprolactone and glycolide. Both terpolymers contain random sequences, in both cases the overall fraction of lactide units is similar to 0.7 and C-13 and H-1 NMR shows the lactide sequence length to be similar to 9-10. A novel representation of the X-ray fibre pattern as series of spherical harmonic functions considerably facilitates the comparison of the scattering from the minority crystalline phase with hot drawn fibres prepared from the poly(L-lactide) homopolymer. Although the fibres exhibit rather disordered structures we show that the crystal structure is equivalent to that displayed by poly(L-lactide) for both the block and random terpolymers. There are variations in the development of a two-phase structure which reflect the differences in the chain architectures. There is evidence that the random terpolymer includes non-lactide units in to the crystal interfaces to achieve a well defined two-phase structure. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We report an Mg-based metallic glass/titanium interpenetrating phase composite in which constituent phases form a homogeneously interconnected network. The porous titanium constrains shear bands propagation thoroughly and promotes shear bands branching and intersection subsequently. The homogeneous phase distribution promotes regularly distributed local shear deformation and leads to a uniform deformation for the composites. Moreover, the interpenetrating phase structure introduces a mutual-reinforcement between metallic glass and titanium. Therefore, the composite exhibits excellent mechanical performance with compressive fracture strength of 1783 MPa and fracture strain of 31%.

ZnO nanoparticles doped with up to 5 at% of Co and Mn were prepared using a co-precipitation method. The location of dopant ions and the effect of doping on the photocatalytic activity were investigated. The crystal structure of nanoparticles and local atomic arrangements around dopant ions were analyzed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the Co ions substituted the Zn ions in the ZnO wurtzite phase structure and induced lattice shrinkage, while Mn ions were not completely incorporated in the crystal lattice. The photocatalytic activity under simulated sunlight was characterized by the decomposition of Rhodamine B dye molecules. It was revealed that Co-doping strongly reduced the photocatalytic activity but Mn-doping showed a weaker effect on the reduction of the photoactivity.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of a low carbon Si–Mn steel with ferrite/bainite dual–phase structure were investigated by thermo–mechanical controlled process (TMCP). The results showed that the curves of the instantaneous work–hardening factor n* value versus true strain ε are made up with three stages during uniform plastic deformation: n* value is relatively higher at stage I, decreases slowly with ε in stage II, and then decreases quickly with ε in stage III. Compared tothe equiaxed ferrite/bainite dual–phase steel, the quasi–polygonal ferrite/bainite dual–phase steel shows higher tensile strength and n*value in the low strain region. The voids or micro–cracks formed not only at ferrite–bainite interfaces but also within ferrite grains in the necked region, which can improve the property of resistance to crack propagation by reducing local stress concentration of the crack tips.

Co and Mn doped ZnO nanoparticles with up to 5 at% doping level were prepared using a mechanochemical method. The location of dopant ions and the effect of doping on the photocatalytic activity were investigated by Synchrotron X-ray Absorption (XAS) Spectroscopy and photo-degradation of Rhodamine B solution. The XAS results showed that the Co ions substituted the Zn ions in the ZnO wurtzite phase structure. It was revealed that Co-doping strongly reduced the photocatalytic activity, while Mn-doping increased the photocatalytic activity at low doping levels but reduced the activity at high doping levels.

Block ionomer complexes SSEBS-c-PCL were prepared, as a consequence of proton transfer from the sulfonic acid of sulfonated polystyrene-block- poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SSEBS) to the tertiary amine of a tertiary amine terminated poly(?-caprolactone) (APCL). The phase behavior of SSEBS-c-PCL was thoroughly investigated and the results showed that APCL in SSEBS-c-PCL displays unique crystallization behavior owing to the influence of interactions between the amine and sulfonic acid groups as well as the effects of confinement. Further, small-angle X-ray scattering study revealed that SSEBS-c-PCL displays a less ordered micro-phase structure compared to SSEBS. A quantitative mapping of mechanical properties at the nanoscale was achieved using peak force mode atomic force microscopy. It is found that the block ionomer complex possesses a higher average elastic modulus after complexation with crystallizable APCL. Additionally, the moduli for both hard and soft phases increase and the phase with higher modulus assignable to the hard SPS component shows much more pronounced changes after complexation, confirming that APCL interacts mainly with the SPS blocks. This provides an understanding of the composition and nanomechanical properties of these new block ionomer complexes and an alternative insight into the micro-phase structures of multi-phase materials.

The multi-phase structure of a novel low-alloy transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel was designed through experimental analysis. The evolutions of both microstructure and mechanical properties during the two-stage heat treatment were analyzed. The phase transformations during the intercritical annealing and the isothermal bainitic transformation were investigated by means of dilatometry. It was shown that two types of C diffusion were detected during intercritical annealing and a complex microstructure was formed after heat treatment. The processing parameters were selected in such a way to obtain microstructures with systematically different volume fractions of ferrite, bainite and retained austenite. The volume fractions of ferrite and retained austenite were found to be two main factors controlling the ductility. Furthermore, a high volume fraction of C-rich retained austenite, which was stabilized at room temperature, was the origin of a TRIP effect. The resulting material demonstrates a significant improvement in the ultimate tensile strength (1077. MPa) with good uniform elongation (22.5%), as compared to conventional TRIP steels. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

A form of two-dimensional (2D) vibrational spectroscopy, which uses two ultrafast IR laser pulses, is used to examine the structure of a cyclic penta-peptide in solution. Spectrally resolved cross peaks occur in the off-diagonal region of the 2D IR spectrum of the amide I region, analogous to those in 2D NMR spectroscopy. These cross peaks measure the coupling between the different amide groups in the structure. Their intensities and polarizations relate directly to the three-dimensional structure of the peptide. With the help of a model coupling Hamiltonian, supplemented by density functional calculations, the spectra of this penta-peptide can be regenerated from the known solution phase structure. This 2D-IR measurement, with an intrinsic time resolution of less than 1 ps, could be used in all time regimes of interest in biology.

Thermosetting blends of a biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)-type epoxy resin (PEG-ER) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared via an in situ curing reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) and maleic anhydride (MAH) in the presence of PCL. The miscibility, phase behavior, crystallization, and morphology of these blends were investigated. The uncured PCL/PEGDGE blends were miscible, mainly because of the entropic contribution, as the molecular weight of PEGDGE was very low. The crystallization and melting behavior of both PCL and the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segment of PEGDGE were less affected in the uncured PCL/PEGDGE blends because of the very close glass-transition temperatures of PCL and PEGDGE. However, the cured PCL/PEG-ER blends were immiscible and exhibited two separate glass transitions, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. There existed two phases in the cured PCL/PEG-ER blends, that is, a PCL-rich phase and a PEG-ER crosslinked phase composed of an MAH-cured PEGDGE network. The crystallization of PCL was slightly enhanced in the cured blends because of the phase-separated nature; meanwhile, the PEG segment was highly restricted in the crosslinked network and was noncrystallizable in the cured blends. The phase structure and morphology of the cured PCL/PEG-ER blends were examined with scanning electron microscopy; a variety of phase morphologies were observed that depended on the blend composition.
