A doença de Parkinson (DP) é uma neuropatologia que decorre em déficits na integração sensório-motora, destacando-se os problemas proprioceptivos e no sistema visual. Estudos mostram que pessoas com DP são mais dependentes da informação visual para executar a locomoção. Entretanto, pouco é conhecido quando a informação visual exproprioceptiva é anulada durante o andar livre e a ultrapassagem de obstáculo. Assim, o objetivo do estudo foi analisar o papel da informação visual exproprioceptiva durante o andar livre e a ultrapassagem de obstáculo em idosos com DP e idosos sadios. Participaram 12 idosos com DP, classificados em 1 e 2 na escala de Hoehn & Yahr, e 12 idosos sadios (pair matched). Os participantes foram convidados a andar, em velocidade preferida, sobre uma passarela de 8 metros sem e com obstáculo (SO e OB, respectivamente). As tentativas foram apresentadas combinando duas condições de informação visual: com e sem informação exproprioceptiva. Foram realizadas 3 tentativas por condição, totalizando 12 tentativas; realizadas em 2 blocos. A informação exproprioceptiva foi manipulada pelo uso de óculos que bloquearam a visão dos membros inferiores. Os dados cinemáticos foram coletados por um sistema optoeletrônico de análise do movimento (OPTOTRAK Certus – 3D Motion Measurement System, NDI). Para análise estatística foram empregadas ANOVAs. Os resultados revelaram efeito principal de grupo e condição para o andar livre e efeito de condição para a fase de ultrapassagem. No andar livre, a hipometria influenciou o comportamento locomotor de idosos com DP comparados a idosos sadios. Ainda, na ausência de informação exproprioceptiva os participantes modificaram seu comportamento locomotor aumentando a cadência, o comprimento e a velocidade da passada e diminuíram a duração da passada e da porcentagem de duplo suporte... Beside aging process comes the incidence of dementia and, among them Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for approximately 60% of cases. This disease is characterized as a neuropathology with unknown etiology that causes cognitive deficits and behavioral disorders. Caring for patients with AD can cause an overload, both physical and psychological, which can cause high levels of stress on the primary caregiver. It is necessary that the caregiver also receives attention and develop activities that promote health benefits, while providing moments of distraction from the task of caring. Nonpharmacological interventions may be favorable for improving health with consequent decreased on the levels of stress. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of scientific papers that aimed to verify the effect of nonpharmacological interventions on stress levels in caregivers of patients with AD. To contamplate this goal was accomplished a systematic search in the following databases: Biological Abstracts, PsycINFO, PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, LILACS and SciELO. The following keywords and Boolean operators was used: “caregivers” OR “family” and “nonpharmacological interventions” OR “support groups” OR “therapies” AND “Alzheimer's disease” OR “Alzheimer's dementia” OR “Alzheimer” OR “elderly” AND “stress”. There were found 3studies that met inclusion criteria adopted for the present work, and none showed significant results for the variable stress. It is not possible to affirm, according to the studies, that nonpharmacologial interventions programs for caregivers of patients with AD are effective to influence and to control the stress. E-mail: caio-patologia@usp.br Enzootic paraplexia or scrapie is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting mainly sheep and rarely goats. The disease is influenced by polymorphisms at codons 136, 154 and 171 of prnp gene that encodes the prion protein. The animals may be susceptible or resistant to the development of the disease according to the allelic sequences observed in these codons. In Brazil there were only cases of scrapie in imported animals, therefore the country is considered free of the disease. This study performed the genotyping of different polymorphisms associated to the development of scrapie. Then, based on these findings the animals were categorized in resistant and susceptible. A total of 118 samples were sequenced from the Santa Ines sheep raised on properties located in the State of Sao Paulo. From these samples, 6 alleles and 11 genotypes were identified (ARQ / ARQ, ARR / ARQ, ARQ / AHQ, ARQ / VRQ, AHQ / AHQ, ARR / ARR, ARR / AHQ, VRQ / VRQ, ARQ / TRQ, TRR / TRR, TRQ / TRQ), the genotype ARQ / ARQ presented a frequency of 56.7%. It was also detected the presence of tyrosine at codon 136, which may be considered a rare observation, since there is no report regarding Santa Ines breeding presenting this polymorphism. These results showed the great genetic variability in Santa Ines in Sao Paulo and only 1,69% of the genotypes observed are extremely resistant to scrapie. These data demonstrate that the Santa Ines sheep can be considered potentially susceptible to scrapie.

OBJECTIVE: Mounting evidence suggests that the limbic system is pathologically involved in cases of psychiatric comorbidities in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients. Our objective was to develop a conceptual framework describing how neuropathological and connectivity changes might contribute to the development of psychosis and to the potential neurobiological mechanisms that cause schizophrenia-like psychosis in TLE patients. METHODS: In this review, clinical and neuropathological findings, especially brain circuitry of the limbic system, were examined together to enhance our understanding of the association between TLE and psychosis. Finally, the importance of animal models in epilepsy and psychiatric disorders was discussed. CONCLUSIONS: TLE and psychiatric symptoms coexist more frequently than chance would predict. Damage and deregulation among critical anatomical regions, such as the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, and the temporal, frontal and cingulate cortices, might predispose TLE brains to psychosis. Studies of the effects of kindling and injection of neuroactive substances on behavior and electrophysiological patterns may offer a model of how limbic seizures in humans increase the vulnerability of TLE patients to psychiatric symptoms.
