The cores described in this report were taken on the WAHINE Expedition in February to March 1965 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from the R/V Spencer F. Baird. A total of 54 cores and dredges were recovered and are available at Scripps for sampling and study.

We analysed the molecular genetic profiles of breast cancer samples before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy with combination doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (AC). DNA was obtained from microdissected frozen breast core biopsies from 44 patients before chemotherapy. Additional samples were obtained before the second course of chemotherapy (D21) and after the completion of the treatment (surgical specimens) in 17 and 21 patients, respectively. Microarray-based comparative genome hybridisation was performed using a platform containing approx5800 bacterial artificial chromosome clones (genome-wide resolution: 0.9 Mb). Analysis of the 44 pretreatment biopsies revealed that losses of 4p, 4q, 5q, 12q13.11–12q13.12, 17p11.2 and 17q11.2; and gains of 1p, 2p, 7q, 9p, 11q, 19p and 19q were significantly associated with oestrogen receptor negativity. 16q21–q22.1 losses were associated with lobular and 8q24 gains with ductal types. Losses of 5q33.3–q4 and 18p11.31 and gains of 6p25.1–p25.2 and Xp11.4 were associated with HER2 amplification. No correlations between DNA copy number changes and clinical response to AC were found. Microarray-based comparative genome hybridisation analysis of matched pretreatment and D21 biopsies failed to identify statistically significant differences, whereas a comparison between matched pretreatment and surgical samples revealed a statistically significant acquired copy number gain on 11p15.2–11p15.5. The modest chemotherapy-driven genomic changes, despite profound loss of cell numbers, suggest that there is little therapeutic selection of resistant non-modal cell lineages.

The molecular pathogenesis of various categories of breast cancer (BC) has been well described, but surprisingly few reports have appeared on analysis of somatic mutations in bilateral BC. We have performed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-driven investigation of chromosomal regions showing common loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in 23 cases (46 rumors) from patients diagnosed with bilateral BC, LOH was observed in 15/46 (33%) informative tumors for chromosome 1p, 5/32 (16%) for 5q, 12/44 (27%) for 11q, 15/40 (38%) for 13q and 4/24 (17%) for 17p. These values are within the range of interlaboratory variations reported fur unilateral BC, There was no strong evidence for concordance of LOH within the same patient for any of the chromosomal loci tested. Atypical for breast carcinomas, 7/46 (15%) turners accumulated a high frequency (ranging from 11 to 29%) of shortened dinucleotide CA repeats, implying microsatellite instability (MI). Further analysis with the highly informative BAT-26 marker allowed for the classification of two of these tumors as having a replication error positive (RER+/MSI-H) phenotype, whereas the remaining five carcinomas harbored so-called borderline MI. Thus an involvement of both RER+ and borderline MI appears to be a distinct feature of bilateral breast carcinomas compared to unilateral lesions. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. We propose and demonstrate single- and multiple-passband fiber grating transmission filters that are remotely tunable by exploitation of the optical pump-induced thermal effects in Er Yb-codoped fiber sections. A repeatable, wavelength-independent induced phase shift of 0.1p mW is obtained without hysteresis and anisotropic effects. A transmission extinction ratio of .23 dB with a 3-mW change in pump power is achieved.

The reasonable choice is a critical success factor for decision- making in the field of software engineering (SE). A case-driven comparative analysis has been introduced and a procedure for its systematic application has been suggested. The paper describes how the proposed method can be built in a general framework for SE activities. Some examples of experimental versions of the framework are brie y presented.

Due to wide range of interest in use of bio-economic models to gain insight into the scientific management of renewable resources like fisheries and forestry, variational iteration method (VIM) is employed to approximate the solution of the ratio-dependent predator-prey system with constant effort prey harvesting. The results are compared with the results obtained by Adomian decomposition method and reveal that VIM is very effective and convenient for solving nonlinear differential equations.

Electronic publishing exploits numerous possibilities to present or exchange information and to communicate via most current media like the Internet. By utilizing modern Web technologies like Web Services, loosely coupled services, and peer-to-peer networks we describe the integration of an intelligent business news presentation and distribution network. Employing semantics technologies enables the coupling of multinational and multilingual business news data on a scalable international level and thus introduce a service quality that is not achieved by alternative technologies in the news distribution area so far. Architecturally, we identified the loose coupling of existing services as the most feasible way to address multinational and multilingual news presentation and distribution networks. Furthermore we semantically enrich multinational news contents by relating them using AI techniques like the Vector Space Model. Summarizing our experiences we describe the technical integration of semantics and communication technologies in order to create a modern international news network.
