This note presents the results of a current study on the parasitism of the yellowfin Thunnus albacares in the Gulf of Guinea: a list of encountered crustaceans and helminths, remarks concerned with localisations, frequencies and intensities of the infestations is given. A hypothesis on the existence of three ecological stocks corresponding to three great fishing areas of the Gulf is suggested.

An Echo-Integration survey on the equator made during he GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment indicated an important biomass in the layer 0/100m. The changes of that biomass have been connected to hydrological conditions. Measurements of target strength have been made, and the biggest schools have been measured.

Stomach contents from 21 species of demersal fish caught on Grand Bassam (Côte d'Ivoire) fishing grounds at 20 and 35 m depth are analyzed. The results are compared with those of Longhurst (1957, 1960). The great importance of Crustacea in the food of those species appears clearly. A representative scheme of the diet is suggested.

The evolution of a plankton copepod population in the Mauritania upwelling was studied by following a drogue for 9 days, from the point of upwelling till the water-mass dives under offshore waters. The Shannon index of specific diversity and the tropic structure allow separation into several stages in the studied succession. The upwelling brings near the shore a rather poor, highly diverse fauna, with a low filter-feeder rate. The phytoplanktonic development induces an increase in the copepod number. The filter-feeders become dominant and the diversity decreases. When the increase of copepod number stops, the diversity decreases and the omnivore and carnivore rate increases.

First experiments to trap the deep sea red crab Geryon quinquedens off Côte d'Ivoire have had good success. The yields obtained are similar to those observed off the northeastern coast of the United States and off Angola, where commercial fisheries have been developed for some years.

We propose an extended form of the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF), where the allocation of surplus energy to reproduction is considered. Any function can be used in our model to describe the ratio of energy allocation for reproduction to that for somatic growth. As an example, two models for energy allocation were derived: a step-function and a logistic function. The extended model can jointly describe growth in adult and juvenile stages. The change in growth rate between the two stages can be either gradual or steep; the latter gives a biphasic VBGF. The results of curve fitting indicated that a consideration of reproductive energy is meaningful for model extension. By controlling parameter values, our comprehensive model gives various growth curve shapes ranging from indeterminate to determinate growth. An increase in the number of parameters is unavoidable in practical applications of this new model. Additional information on reproduction will improve the reliability of model estimates.

A study was undertaken to assess the growth performance of brackishwater tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon under monoculture in a hardwater seasonal pond in Tamil Nadu, India. A production of 209 kg/ha/110 days was attained at a low stocking density of 1.5/m2.
