Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important cash crop in Honduras because of the rice lobby’s size, willingness to protest, and ability to negotiate favorable price guarantees on a year-to-year basis. Despite the availability of inexpensive irrigation in the study area in Flores, La Villa de San Antonio, Comayagua, the rice farmers do not cultivate the crop using prescribed methods such as land leveling, puddling, and water conservation structures. Soil moisture (Volumetric Water Content) was measured using a soil moisture probe after the termination of the first irrigation within the tillering/vegetative, panicle emergence/flowering, post-flowering/pre-maturation and maturation stages. Yield data was obtained by harvesting on 1 m2 plots in each soil moisture testing site. Data was analyzed to find the influence of toposequential position along transects, slope, soil moisture, and farmers on yields. The results showed that toposequential position was more important than slope and soil moisture on yields. Soil moisture was not a significant predictor of rice yields. Irrigation politics, precipitation, and land tenure were proposed as the major explanatory variables for this result.

The global population of the Neotropical migrant Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) has declined steadily over the past fifty years. While factors influencing this decline have been well researched on the breeding grounds, little is known about the distribution and habitat requirements of this warbler on its stationary non-breeding range. Recent efforts to quantify the non-breeding habitat requirements of this warbler have focused on Colombia and Costa Rica, though the species ranges as far north as the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. To address the gap in knowledge from the northern portion of the non-breeding range, I conducted 80 serial point-count surveys targeting Goldenwinged Warblers at eight field sites in Honduras, Central America. I found that Goldenwinged Warblers occupy a greater variety of habitats than previously recognized, including pine-oak forest and semi-deciduous broadleaf forest. I also documented habitat associations that have not been observed in other parts of the non-breeding range with respect to elevation, rainfall, and spatial segregation by sex. These results demonstrate the need to consider the entire non-breeding range in conservation planning, as Goldenwinged Warbler habitat associations appear to vary regionally.

Despite failed attempts at obtaining a potable water system, the village of El Caracol in Southern Honduras remains committed to improving access to water resources. To assist in this endeavor, an investigation of the hydrogeological characteristics of the local watershed was conducted. Daily precipitation was recorded to examine the relationship between precipitation and approximated river and spring discharges. A Thornthwaite Mather Water Balance Model was used to predict monthly discharges for comparison with observed values, and to infer the percentage of topographic watersheds contributing to the respective discharges. As aquifer porosity in this region is thought to be primarily secondary (i.e., fractures), field observed lineaments were compared with those interpreted from remote sensing imagery in an attempt to determine the usefulness of these interpretations in locating potential water sources for a future project.

Indoor air pollution from combustion of solid fuels is the fifth leading contributor to disease burden in low-income countries. This, and potential to reduce environmental impacts, has resulted in emphasis on use of improved stoves. However, many efforts have failed to meet expectations and effective coverage remains limited. A disconnect exists between technologies, delivery methods, and long-term adoption. The purpose of this research is to develop a framework to increase long-term success of improved stove projects. The framework integrates sustainability factors into the project life-cycle. It is represented as a matrix and checklist which encourages consideration of social, economic, and environmental issues in projects. A case study was conducted in which an improved stove project in Honduras was evaluated using the framework. Results indicated areas of strength and weakness in project execution and highlighted potential improvements for future projects. The framework is also useful as a guide during project planning.
