New glass forming systems based on Sb2O3-SbPO4 has been explored. These glasses present higher thermal stability against devitrification and higher refractive index than chalcogenide glasses. Under irradiation, using Ar-laser 350nm wavelength and 50 mW power density, change on the coloration is observed. Structural and electronic modifications around Sb cations induced by such treatment have been characterized by XANES measurements at the L-Sb edges. on the one hand, XANES spectra, at the LJ edge, show a decrease of the coordination number for Sb atoms induced by exposure to light indicating a breaking of Sb-O bonds in the glassy network. on the other hand, XANES spectra, at the Lt edge, suggest a change in the oxidation state of Sb atoms. These modifications associated to the photodarkening of the glass is reversible either after a couple of days or after heating the glass at the glass transition temperature, T-g.

This study evaluated the influence of light-curing units (LCUs) on Knoop microhardness (KHN) of different composite resins formulations. Four LCUs, one Quartz-Tungsten-Halogen (QTH) for 20 s, one Argon-Ion-Laser (AL) for 10 s, one Plasma-Arc-Curing (PAC) for 9 s, and one Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) for 20 s, and three composite resins, nanofill and easy cure (Filtek (TM) Supreme), microhybrid and medium cure (Herculite XRV), and microfill and difficult cure (Heliomolar) were used. Discs (4 x 2 mm(2)) of each composite resin were divided in 12 Groups and KHN was measured at the top (T) and bottom (B) surfaces. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Top presented significantly higher KHN than bottom surface for all composite resins and LCUs tested. Statistical significant differences were observed among the LCUs. At the bottom surface QTH and LED presented higher KHN than PAC and LA. However, at the top surface PAC and LA presented similar results than QTH for nanofill and microhybrid composite resins. Different LCUs play an important effect on Knoop microhardness and the composite resin formulations were significant factor on the photosensitivity.

A presentation of two cases of Dubowitz syndrome in monozigous twin girls. The syndrome is a rare congenital disorder, the main clinical aspects of which include retarded intrauterine and post-natal growth, microcephaly, peculiar face and an eczemic rash, resulting from photosensitivity of the regions exposed to sunlight.

As part of a study of plants involved in crystal-associated hepatogenous photosensitization diseases, samples of Brachiaria decumbens and Panicum dichotomiflorum on which cattle and goats had recently been photosensitized were analyzed. The level of saponins associated with these photosensitization outbreaks were determined by GC-MS. Only low levels of Pithomyces chartarum spores were present on the B decumbens, and all isolates obtained failed to produce sporidesmin.

Liver and lymph nodes injuries characterized by clusters of foamy macrophages, some of them containing birefringent crystals, were observed in cattle fed on Brachiaria brizantha hay. The cattle were from an experimental group poisoned with Senecio brasiliensis known to cause hepatic fibrosis and hepatocyte megalocytosis. One of the animals developed photosensitivity but the exact cause wasn't determined since both plants were fed. The foamy macrophages were present from the 30th d of feeding. Early appearance of these lesions may be particular to the animal specie used or due to the presence of both toxic plants.

In this paper it is presented recent developments in the heterodyne detection holographic techniques for studding photosensitive materials. The actual state of the technique allows simultaneous and independent measurement of the refractive index and of the absorption coefficient changes in photosensitive materials and their use to self-stabilize the fringe pattern. The modeling of the measured signal together with the fringe stabilization allow the long term-fitting of the optical properties and the study the photosensitive materials close to the saturation.

Although not desirable, cosmetic products can cause some adverse effects in me user. Such effects can be due bom to individual factors and by inadequate use. So, the safety evaluation must precede the placement of the cosmetic product in the market. Once the consumer has free access to cosmetic product, it must be safe in normal conditions or reasonably previsible of use. Historically the evaluation tests were accomplished with animals (in vivo) but, at the moment, some research centers have been adopting new alternatives (in vitro) in order to replace me tests with animals. This article emphasizes me necessity of accomplishing toxicity assays for personal hygiene products, cosmetics and perfumes, an also presents the tests in vivo and in vitro used, approaching the necessity of alternative methods to the assays in vitro in the evaluation of security of them.

In this work we studied the changes of the optical constants of films in the binary system Sb2O3-Sb2S3 induced by light in the VIS-UV. The measurements were performed before and after homogeneous irradiation of the films to a Hg lamp and in real time during the holographic exposure of the samples (at 458nm). Changes of the absorption coefficient (amplitude grating) and refractive index (phase grating) were measured simultaneously using the self-diffraction using the holographic setup. Besides the films presented a strong photodarkening effect under homogeneous irradiation, the samples holographically exposed presented only refractive index modulations. None amplitude modulation was measured in real time for spatial frequencies of about 1000 l/mm. © 2009 SPIE.

(Photo)electrochemical experiments on pyrite electrodes in acetic acid-acetate buffer (pH = 4.5) are conducted to clarify the main oxidation reactions and the nature of the products. Electrochemical reactions in the -0.40 to 1.25 V (SHE) potential range are studied, and the production of iron (III) polysulfide from anodically formed iron oxides and polysulfides is discussed. Charges experimentally obtained are considered for the estimation of the most likely stoichiometry of the metallic polysulfide. The photoselectivity of the pyrite corrosion process indicates that the oxidation reactions of Fe2+ and S-2(2-) an not consecutive. The changes in stoichiometry and/or annihilation of crystalline structure defects are responsible for the observed photosensitivity of pyrite. A description of light effects on the interfacial behaviour and stability of pyrite is presented in terms of conduction and valence band energies, and thermodynamic potentials. The photosensitivity of GeSx binary glasses in response to irradiation to femtosecond pulses at 800 nm is investigated. Samples with three different molecular compositions were irradiated under different exposure conditions. The material response to laser exposure was characterized by both refractometry and micro-Raman spectroscopy. It is shown that the relative content of sulfur in the glass matrix influences the photo-induced refractive index modification. At low sulfur content, both positive and negative index changes can be obtained while at high sulfur content, only a positive index change can be reached. These changes were correlated with variations in the Raman response of exposed glass which were interpreted in terms of structural modifications of the glass network. Under optimized exposure conditions, waveguides with positive index changes of up to 7.8x10−3 and a controllable diameter from 14 to 25 μm can be obtained. Direct inscription of low insertion losses (IL = 3.1 – 3.9 dB) waveguides is demonstrated in a sample characterized by a S/Ge ratio of 4. The current results open a pathway towards the use of Ge-S binary glasses for the fabrication of integrated mid-infrared photonic components.
