The objective of this research was to evaluate average daily gain (ADG), carcass traits, meat tenderness and profitability of keeping cattle fed different oilseeds and vitamin E in feedlot. A total of 40 Red Norte young bulls with initial average body weight of 339±15 kg were utilized. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. The experiment lasted 84 days and experimental diets presented soybeans or cottonseeds as lipid sources associated or not to daily supplementation of 2,500 UI vitamin E per animal. The concentrate:roughage ratio was 60:40. Diets had the same amount of nitrogen (13% CP) and ether extract (6.5%). The data were analyzed by means of statistical software SAS 9.1. Neither vitamin supplementation nor lipid source affected ADG. There was no interaction between lipid source and vitamin supplementation for the variables studied. The inclusion of cottonseed reduced the carcass yield. There was no effect of diets on hot and cold carcass weights or prime cuts. The inclusion of cottonseed reduced the backfat thickness. No effect of experimental diets on the rib-eye area was observed. There was no effect of lipid source or vitamin supplementation on meat tenderness, which was affected, however, by ageing time. Diets with soybeans presented higher cost per animal. The utilization of soybean implied reduction of the gross margin (R$ 59.17 and R$ 60.51 for diets based on soy with and without supplemental vitamin, respectively, vs. R$ 176.42 and R$ 131.79 for diets based on cottonseed). The utilization of cottonseed enables improvement of profitability of feedlot fattening, in spite of negatively affecting some carcass characteristics.

Blue luminescence emission around 480 nm through cooperative upconversion from pairs of Yb3+ ions implanted into 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) tellurite glasses and excited by a cw laser at 1.064 mum is demonstrated. Cooperative luminescence emission enhancement owing to the temperature dependent multiphonon-assisted anti-Stokes excitation process of the ytterbium ions is also observed. The experimental results revealed a fourfold enhancement in the cooperative luminescence emission when the sample was heated in the temperature range of 20 degreesC-260 degreesC. The thermally induced enhancement is assigned to the effective absorption cross-section for the ytterbium ions which is an increasing function of the medium temperature. Objective: the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of low-intensity laser therapy on the wound healing process treated with steroid. Background Data: Various biological effects have been associated with low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Materials and Methods: Forty-eight rats were used, and after execution of a wound on the dorsal region of each animal, they were divided into 4 groups (n = 12), receiving the following treatments: G1 (control), wounds and animals received no treatment; G2, wounds were treated with LLLT; G3, animals received an intraperitoneal injection of steroid dosage (2 mg/kg of body weight); G4, animals received steroid and wounds were treated with LLLT. The laser emission device used was a GaAIAs (904 nm), in a contact mode, with 2.75 mW gated with 2.900 Hz during 120 sec (33 J/cm(2)). After the period of 3, 7, and 14 days, the animals were sacrificed and the parts sent to histological processing and dyed using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Masson trichromium (MT) techniques. Results: the results have shown that the wounds treated with steroid had a delay in healing, while LLLT accelerated the wound healing process. Also, wounds treated with laser in the animals treated with steroid presented a differentiated healing process with a larger collagen deposition and also a decrease in both the inflamatory infiltrated and the delay on the wound healing process. Conclusion: LLLT accelerated healing, caused by the steroid, acting as a biostimulative coadjutant agent, balancing the undesirable effects of cortisone (in the tissue healing process.

Neutron activation analysis has been used to study uranium incorporation in poultry bones as function of chow doped with : (a) uranium (20 ppm); (b) U-doped food (20 ppm) plus phytase (120 ppm) and (c) U-doped food (20 ppm) plus phytase (180 ppm). To investigate this situation experiments involving several groups of Cobb broilers was performed. Two animals per group were sacrificed weekly up to their adultness and uranium concentration in the tibia was measured. It was observed that the concentration of uranium (mug U/g bone) is decreasing all along the animal life spanning period of 14-42 days. This behavior suggests that the skeleton mass is growing faster than the corresponding accumulation of uranium. The administration of phytase seems not to alter this scenario.

The effect of ytterbium ions upon energy transfer (ET) excited upconversion emission in Nd3+/Pr3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass under 810 nm diode laser excitation is investigated. The results revealed that the presence of Yb3+ ions in the Nd3+/Pr3+-doped sample yields a fourfold enhancement in the visible and near infrared upconversion luminescence. The dependence of the upconversion process upon the excitation power, Nd3+, and Yb3+ concentrations is examined. The results indicated that ytterbium plays a major role in the ET upconversion process by bridging the 810nm neodymium excitation to praseodymium ions. The population of the Pr3+ ions P-3(0) emitting level was accomplished through a multi-ion interaction involving ground-state and excited-state absorption of pump photons at 810 nm by the Nd3+ followed by successive ET involving the Nd3+-Yb3+ and Yb3+-Pr3+ pairs. There is also direct ET Nd3+-Pr3+. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bright blue upconversion emission by thulium ions in PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass triply doped with Nd3+-Tm3+-Yb3+ under diode laser excitation around 800 nm is reported. The results revealed that the Nd3+/Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped sample generated ten times more 475 nm blue upconversion fluorescence than the Yb3+-sensitized Tm3+-doped one, under the same excitation power. The upconversion process also showed a strong dependence upon the Yb3+ concentration. The results also indicated that the neodymium ions played a major role in the upconversion process by transfering the 800 nm excitation to thulium ions. The population of the Tm3+ ions (1)G(4) emitting level was accomplished through a multiion interaction involving ground-state absorption of pump photons around 800 nm by the Nd3+(I-4(9/2)-->H-2(9/2), F-4(5/2)) and Tm3+(H-3(6)-->F-3(4)) ions followed by energy-transfer processes involving the Nd3+-Yb3+(F-4(3/2), F-2(7/2)-->I-4(11/2), F-2(5/2)) and Yb3+-Tm3+(F-2(5/2), F-3(4)-->F-2(7/2), (1)G(4)) pairs. Infrared-to-visible upconversion emission enhancement through thermal effects in Yb3+-sensitized Pr3+-doped fluoroindate glasses excited at 1.064 mu m is investigated. A twentyfold increase in the 485 nm blue emission intensity as the sample temperature was varied from 20 to 260 degrees C was observed. The visible upconversion fluorescence enhancement is ascribed to the temperature dependent multiphonon-assisted anti-Stokes excitation of the ytterbium sensitizer and excited-state absorption of the praseodymium acceptor. A model based upon conventional rate equations considering a temperature dependent effective absorption cross section for the F-2(7/2)-->F-2(5/2) transition of the Yb3+ and (1)G(4)-->P-3(0) excited-state absorption of the Pr3+, agrees very well with the experimental results. Red, green, and blue emission through frequency upconversion and energy-transfer processes in tellurite glasses doped with Tm3+ and Er3+ excited at 1.064 mum is investigated. The Tm3+/Er3+-codoped samples produced intense upconversion emission signals at around 480, 530, 550 and 660 nm. The 480 nm blue emission was originated from the (1)G(4)-->H-3(6) transition of the Tm3+ ions excited by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process. The 5 30, 5 50 nm green and 660 mn red upconversion luminescences were identified as originating from the H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2) transitions of the Er3+ ions, respectively, populated via efficient cross-relaxation processes and excited-state absorption. White light generation employing a single infrared excitation source is also examined. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. (USA). All rights reserved.

The accumulation and microdistribution of uranium in the bone and marrow of Beagle dogs were determined by both neutron activation and neutron-fission analysis. The experiment started immediately after the weaning period, lasting till maturity. Two animal groups were fed daily with uranyl nitrate at concentrations of 20 and 100 mug(-1) food. of the two measuring techniques, uranium accumulated along the marrow as much as in the bone, contrary to the results obtained with single, acute doses. The role played by this finding for the evaluation of radiobiological long-term risks is discussed. It was demonstrated, by means of a biokinetical approach, that the long-term accumulation of uranium in bone and marrow could be described by a piling up of single dose daily incorporation.

Temperature investigation of infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion in erbium-doped tellurite glasses excited by CW laser radiation at 1540 nm and under cryogenic temperatures is reported. Intense upconversion emission signals around 530, 550 and 660 nm corresponding to the H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground state were generated and studied as a function of the laser intensity and temperature. The upconversion excitation mechanism of the Er3+ ions emitting energy levels was accomplished via stepwise multiphoton absorption. The green upconversion luminescence exhibited a fivefold intensity enhancement when the temperature of the sample was varied in the range between 5 and 300 K. A maximum green upconversion intensity was attained around 120 K and a steady decreasing behavior for higher temperatures up to 300 K was observed. A model based upon conventional rate equations was used to model the observed temperature evolution of the upconversion luminescence. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
