Eucalyptus is the most important plantation forest species in Brazil. Wilt and canker caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata on eucalyptus were first reported in 1998 in plantations of an E. grandis × E. urophylla hybrid in southern Bahia, Brazil. This work aimed at studying the reaction of different eucalyptus genotypes after inoculation with C. fimbriata isolates, in order to find a possible source of resistance. The study included four isolates of Ceratocystis collected from eucalyptus in different regions. One disc of fungal mycelium with 1-cm-diameter (from colonies growing for 10 days on malt extract agar medium-MEA) was inoculated on the stem of thus injured eucalyptus plants (six months old). A cotton wool moistened with sterile distilled water was wrapped with plastic film. Control plants were inoculated with discs of MEA without fungal colonies. The inoculated plants were kept in a greenhouse. Wilt symptoms were observed 90 days after inoculation. The seedlings were cut in the longitudinal direction of the stem in order to observe the colonization of fungus in the plant xylem. We tested twenty eucalyptus genotypes, but only five showed resistance to all isolates of Ceratocystis, belonging to different species of Eucalyptus: E. urophylla (C2 and C9), E. grandis (C3), E. saligna (C6 and C13) Most E. gramdis genotypes were more susceptible to all four fungal isolates. These results support future studies related to eucalyptus resistance to Ceratocystis.

Water deficit is one of the environmental factors that cause a great reduction in the upland rice grain yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate genotypes of upland rice with broad genetic diversity for tolerance to this stress and to identify secondary traits for evaluation of this tolerance. Sixty-four genotypes were evaluated during two years at the Experiment Station of EMATER, in Porangatu, GO, under well-watered and water deficit conditions. The genotypes showed differences in grain yield and were influenced differently by the water treatments, both under a mild water deficit in the first year and under a severe one in the second year. The genotype grain yield under water deficiency was significantly and positively correlated with tiller fertility, number of panicles m-2, 100-grain weight, and plant height, and negatively with spikelet sterility and the number of days for the occurrence of 50% panicle emergence. It was also observed that the most productive genotypes under water deficit conditions showed lower leaf temperature, indicating improved water status. Nine genotypes were productive in both water conditions and three were productive only when well-watered.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance and grain quality, especially the grain technological characteristics in the common bean genotypes, cultivated in winter-spring season. The experiment was carried out in Jaboticabal-SP, in a Rhodic Hapludox. The experimental design was a randomized block with 17 treatments (genotypes) with three replications. The plots had been composed for 17 carioca common bean group genotypes (Pérola, BRS Cometa, BRS Pontal, IPR Juriti, CNFC 10703, CNFC 10713, CNFC 10716, CNFC 10721, CNFC 10729, CNFC 10733, CNFC 10742, CNFC 10753, CNFC 10757, CNFC 10758, CNFC 10762, CNFC 10763 and CNFC 10813). BRS Pontal and CNFC 10716 showed simultaneously the higher number of per plant and grain yield. The technological characteristics more expressive was verified in CNFC 10703, CNFC 10713, CNFC 10758, CNFC 10813 and CNFC 10716 genotypes, principally about the protein content, cooking time and grain hydration capacity. The CNFC 10716 genotype detached as promissory, because their elevated agronomic performance and satisfactory technological characteristics.
