The effects of plant regulators and potassium nitrate were studied on 'Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck) seeds germination. The seeds were removed from ripe fruits, washed, dried and stored at 4 - 5 degrees C, and treated for 24 hours before sowing and the treatments were: KNO3 0,1% and 0,2%; GA(3) 50 ppm, 100 ppm and 250 ppm; GA(4+7)+phenylmethylaminepurine 100 ppm; phenylmethylaminepurine 20 ppm and control. The germination was evaluated begining 13 days after sowing. Best results were obtained with KNO3 0,2%, which proved most beneficial in enhancing percentage and germination rate.

The oxygen consumption of the tropical millipede, Pseudonannolene tricolor (Spirostreptida, Pseudonannolenidae) was studied in both male and female animals (body mass varying from 0.242 to 2.802 g) using a Warburg microrespirometer at 25-degrees-C.2. The allometric equation M = a W(b) was used in order to check the metabolic increases with increasing body mass. The b exponents were, respectively, 0.68 for males and 0.60 for females.3. Results are discussed in terms of the meaning of the b values in Diplopoda and animals in general.4. A relationship between volume and body mass in P. tricolor is also reported.

Buffalo erythrocytes contain one isozyme of hexokinase that apparently lacks microheterogeneity as shown by chromatographic properties. A single protein band was detected by means of Western blotting using an antibody raised in rabbits against homogeneous rat brain hexokinase I. The native protein has a molecular weight of 200,000 +/- 2880 by gel filtration. Partial purification of erythrocyte hexokinase by a combination of several procedures, including affinity chromatography, which was previously applied successfully to the purifica tion of other mammalian type I hexokinases, produced a partially purified enzyme that showed several contami nants after SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The affinity of buffalo erythrocyte hexokinase for glucose (K-m = 0.012 +/- 0.001 mM) is lower than most other mammal hexokinases type I. It phosphorylates other sugars, with considerably higher K-m values. This isozyme is able to use MgATP but does not use MgGTP, MgCTP or MgUTP. We used inhibition patterns, obtained with products to elucidate enzyme sequential mechanisms. Our results are clearly in agreement with a random sequential mechanism and in disagreement with an ordered sequential mechanism with either glucose or ATP as the obligatory first substrates. The compensatory changes of carbohydrate metabolism induced by fasting were investigated in frugivorous bats, Artibeus lituratus and Artibeus jamaicensis. For this purpose, plasma levels of glucose and lactate, liver and muscle glycogen content, rates of liver gluconeogenesis and the activity of related enzymes were determined in male bats. After a decrease during the first 48 h of fasting, plasma glucose levels remained constant until the end of the experimental period. Plasma lactate levels, extremely high in fed bats, decreased after 48 h of fasting. Similarly, liver glycogen content, markedly high in fed animals, was reduced to low levels after 24 h without food. Muscle glycogen was also reduced in fasted bats. The expected increase in liver gluconeogenesis during fasting was observed after 48 h of fasting. The activities of liver glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase were not affected by food withdrawn. on the other hand, fasting for 24 h induced an increase in the activity of liver cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. The data indicate that liver gluconeogenesis has an important role in the glucose homeostasis in frugivorous bats during prolonged periods of food deprivation. Pericardial tissue has been used to construct bioprostheses employed in the repair of different kinds of injuries, mostly cardiac. However, calcification and mechanical failure have been the main causes of the limited durability of cardiac bioprostheses constructed with bovine pericardium. In the course of this work, a study was conducted on porcine fibrous pericardium, its microscopic structure and biochemical nature. The general morphology and architecture of collagen were studied under conventional light and polarized light microscopy. The biochemical study of the pericardial matrix was conducted according to the following procedures: swelling test, hydroxyproline and collagen dosage, quantification of amino acids in soluble collagen, component extraction of the extracellular matrix of the right and left ventral regions of pericardium with different molarities of guanidine chloride, protein and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) dosage, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and total GAG analysis. Microscopic analysis showed collagen fibers arranged in multidirectionally oriented layers forming a closely knit web, with a larger number of fibers obliquely oriented, initiating at the lower central region toward the upper left lateral relative to the heart. No qualitative differences were found between proteins extracted from the right and left regions. Likewise, no differences were found between fresh and frozen material. Protein dosages from left frontal and right frontal pericardium regions showed no significant differences. The quantities of extracted GAGs were too small for detection by the method used. Enzymatic digestion and electrophoretic analysis showed that the GAG found is possibly dermatan sulfate. The proteoglycan showed a running standard very similar to the small proteoglycan decorin.

Photosynthesis is the single most important source of 02 and organic chemical energy necessary to support all non-autotrophic life forms. Plants compartmentalize this elaborate biochemical process within chloroplasts in order to safely harness the power of solar energy and convert it into usable chemical units. Stresses (biotic or abiotic) that challenge the integrity of the plant cell are likely to affect photosynthesis and alter chlorophyll fluorescence. A simple three-step assay was developed to test selected herbicides representative of the known herbicide mechanisms of action and a number of natural phytotoxins to determine their effect on photosynthesis as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence. The most active compounds were those interacting directly with photosynthesis (inhibitors of photosystem I and II), those inhibiting carotenoid synthesis, and those with mechanisms of action generating reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation (uncouplers and inhibitors of protoporphyrinogen oxidase). Other active compounds targeted lipids (very-long-chain fatty acid synthase and removal of cuticular waxes). Therefore, induced chlorophyll fluorescence is a good biomarker to help identify certain herbicide modes of action and their dependence on light for bioactivity. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Atrazine is the triazinic herbicide most found in the rural aquatic environments due to its extensive use and its stability in such places. The mutagenicity and the genotoxicity of different concentrations of the Atrazine herbicide were determinated by the micronucleus test and the comet assay, using Oreochromis niloticus as test-system. The tested concentrations of Atrazine herbicide were 6.25, 12.5 and 25 mu g/L, both for the micronuclei test and for the comet assay. The results showed a significant rate of micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities for all the tested concentrations of Atrazine herbicide. For the comet assay, we also observed results significantly different from the control in 6.25, 12.5 and 25 mu g/L concentrations. Due to these results, we could infer that such herbicide may be dangerous to the lives of those organisms exposed to it. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1. 1. Water balance in the toad Bufo marinus ictericus was studied by evaluating cutaneous water uptake and renal excretion. 2. 2. The permeability of the skin to water was 78 ± 6 nl min -1 cm -2 atm -1 in 60 toads anaesthetized by chloralose and preincubated in water for 3 hr. Injection of Ringer's solution did not reduce the water uptake by the skin, while hemorrhage, or injection of vasopressin, or oxytocin approximately doubled the rates of water transport. In vivo values of skin water permeability were similar to those observed in vitro. 3. 3. The renal parameters of the water balance were significantly reduced by hemorrhage and by injection of vasopressin. Injection of Ringer's solution promoted a significant increase of the urinary flow and osmolar clearance. 4. 4. It is suggested that the fight against water deprivation could proceed initially by the triggering of the urinary mechanisms of water retention, while the increase of the skin water permeability would occur in a later stage. © 1981.

Under normoxic conditions at 25°C Pomacea lineata, free to move into or out of water, showed an increase in O2 consumption with increase in body size (dry wt), the slope of the log-log plot of these two parameters being b = 0.76. 2. 2. The metabolic rate decreased with weight. 3. 3. Males and females in a sexually receptive state did not exhibit significantly different QO2 values. 4. 4. The metabolic rates of animals when under water using ctenidium did not differ significantly from when out of water using the lung. © 1981.

1. 1. Routine oxygen consumption and blood glucose were determined from freshwater fishes, Prochilodus scrofa and Cyprinus carpio, exposed at high temperatures for 1 hr. 2. 2. Prochilodus scrofa had a significantly higher rate of oxygen consumption at 30°C than at 25°C, and carp higher at 25°C than at 30°C. 3. 3. Blood glucose was significantly higher for Cyprinus carpio than for Prochilodus scrofa at 25 and 30°C; however, after exposure to these temperatures for 1 hr blood glucose did not change significantly for both species. 4. 4. The results suggest that these interspecific variations may be linked to the differences between native and foreign fishes and their way of life. © 1985.
