Ultrastructure of the digestive cells was analyzed in three midgut regions (anterior, middle and posterior) of stingless bees. Variations occurs in the presence of lipid inclusions in the cells from posterior midgut and presence of double-membraned vesicles associated to microvilli in the anterior midgut. However, basal plasmic membrane infoldings and augmentation of surface area achieved by microvilli ale very similar in all midgut regions. These results not supported the existence of fluid fluxes in the ectoperitrophic space and suggest that digestive cells in stingless bees are polifunctional, that is, there is not midgut region specialized in secretion ol absorption as observed in other insects.

The selectivity of I-hexene metathesis using WCI6 as catalyst was evaluated with a series of hydrosilane-compounds as cocatalysts: Ph3SiH, Ph2SiH2, PhSiH3 and polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS). The metathesis reaction is favored by the addition of promoters. When in the presence of WCl4(OAr)(2), OAr = 2,6-dichlorophenoxide, 2,6-difluorophenoxide, olefin metathesis occurs with good selectivity without the use of promoters. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. A comparative study of four different staining methods for estimation of live yeast form cells of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis was carried out. The staining methods used were fluorescent staining, vital dye exclusion tests with erythrosin B and by Janus green and lactophenol cotton blue staining. Colony forming units (cfu) of the yeast form of eight P. brasiliensis isolates on brain heart infusion agar (BHIA) supplemented with 4% horse serum plus 5% P. brasiliensis cell extract (BHIA + HS + EXT) were examined for reliability of staining in determining the number of live fungal units in eight different isolates. Cfu on BHIA + HS + EXT plates showed an excellent plating efficiency over 96% in all isolates tested. The percentage of the live cells indicated by fluorescent staining (FL) or vital dye exclusion test with erythrosin B (EB) or Janus green (JG-1) was lower than that of cfu. By contrast, the percentage due to modified dye exclusion test with Janus green (JG-2) and that due to lactophenol cotton blue staining (LPCB) showed a close correration to that of cfu. Our results indicate that the modified dye exclusion test with Janus green and lactophenol cotton blue staining are useful for estimating cell viability of yeast form cells of P. brasiliensis.

Drosophila sturtevanti from several geographic origins were analyzed for their capacity to intercross and to yield progeny. Mass intercrosses involving laboratory stocks and recently collected strains were fertile, which suggests that the genetic differentiation among these geographically isolated populations did not affect their reproductive patterns sufficiently to lead to reproductive isolation. Analysis of the number of progeny (productivity) in intracrosses and intercrosses was informative as to the amount of variation this feature exhibits in the laboratory stocks and in the recently collected strains. Also laboratory stocks and recently collected flies shared a positive correlation in that the greater the control productivity of a strain the greater the number of its intercrosses which exhibited reduced productivity.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes produced by the Frankel (FR-2) and bionator appliances in persons with Class 11 malocclusion. Lateral cephalograms were available for 66 patients of both sexes, who were divided into 3 groups of 22. The control group included untreated Class 11 children, with an initial mean age of 8 years 7 months; they were followed without treatment for 13 months. The FR-2 appliance group had an initial mean age of 9 years; those children were treated for a mean period of 17 months. The bionator group initially had a mean age of 10 years 8 months; on average, they were treated for 16 months. The results demonstrated no significant changes in maxillary growth during the evaluation period. Both appliances showed statistically significant increases in mandibular growth and mandibular protrusion, with greater increases in patients treated in the bionator group. Both experimental groups showed an improvement in the maxillomandibular relationship. There were no significant changes in growth direction, while the bionator group had a greater increase in posterior facial height. Both appliances produced similar labial tipping and protrusion of the lower incisors, lingual inclination, retrusion of the upper incisors, and a significant increase in mandibular posterior dentoalveolar height. The major treatment effects of bionator and FR-2 appliances were dentoalveolar, with a smaller, but significant, skeletal effect.
