The effect of prestraining (PS) and bake hardening (BH) on the microstructures and mechanical properties has been studied in transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and dual-phase (DP) steels after intercritical annealing. The DP steel showed an increase in the yield strength and the appearance of the upper and lower yield points after a single BH treatment as compared with the as-received condition, whereas the mechanical properties of the TRIP steel remained unchanged. This difference appears to be because of the formation of plastic deformation zones with high dislocation density around the “as-quenched” martensite in the DP steel, which allowed carbon to pin these dislocations, which, in turn, increased the yield strength. It was found for both steels that the BH behavior depends on the dislocation rearrangement in ferrite with the formation of cell, microbands, and shear band structures after PS. The strain-induced transformation of retained austenite to martensite in the TRIP steel contributes to the formation of a complex dislocation structure.

Time-resolved fluorescence microscopy has rapidly emerged as the technique of choice for many researchers aiming to gain specific insights into the dynamics of intricate biological systems. Although the unique advantages the technique provides over other methods have proven to be particularly useful in the biosciences, to date they have been largely unexploited by other research disciplines. In this paper, we demonstrate the capacity of time-resolved fluorescence microscopy as a practical analytical tool in the forensic sciences via the imaging of gunshot residues that are expelled when a firearm is discharged. This information may prove to be useful for determination of the true sequence of events that took place in a firearm related crime.

Substitution reactions between multiwalled carbon nanotubes and silicon monoxide vapour have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy. Different reactions occurred inside the multiwalled nanotubes and on the nanotube external surfaces, resulting in the formation of silicon carbide nanowires with a core–shell structure. The substitution reaction process and end products are strongly affected by nanotube structures and a ball milling treatment of the starting materials.

The adsorption of DNA on the Langmuir film of a cationic surfactant, dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA·Br), and the change of the aggregation morphology of the composite monolayer with respect to surface pressure have been investigated by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). In contrast with the case of DODA·Br on pure water subphase, when DNA was dispersed into subphase, its adsorption to the interface monolayer through electrostatic interaction decreases the charge density and therefore promotes the formation of domain at low surface pressure. In addition, the electrostatic interaction changed the phase morphology of DODA·Br Langmuir monolayer under different surface pressure, that is, from flower-shaped crystalline domain on the pure water subphase to circular domain on the subphase dispersed with DNA. The result also shows that the monolayer of the composite at air/water interface under the high pressure is not homogeneous, but consists of incompletely fused domains. For the Langmuir film of the surfactant with shorter alkyl-chains, similar morphology can be observed both under the high and low surface pressure. But the tight-stacked circular domain is no longer observed.

BACKGROUND: In transmission and scanning electron microscopy imaging, the ability to obtain sufficient contrast between the components of a blend when they are both of a similar chemical structure still remains problematic. This paper investigates the domain morphology of a polymer blend containing two polyamides, nylon 6 and the semi-aromatic polyamide poly(m-xylene adipamide) (MXD6), using scanning electron microscopy in backscattered electron imaging mode. The efficiency of three staining agents, ruthenium tetroxide, phosphotungstic acid and silver sulfide, in obtaining optimum phase contrast between the two polymers is discussed.
RESULTS: The use of silver sulfide as a staining agent was found to be a fast and reliable approach which required basic sample preparation and provided excellent compositional contrast between the phases present in the nylon 6/MXD6 blends compared to the other staining agents.
CONCLUSIONS: The technique described in this paper is believed to be a novel and versatile method that has the potential to further improve the ability to study complex polymer blends where one polymer contains an aromatic ring.

A microstructural characterisation of the family of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate organic salts was carried out by observation of powder surface morphologies with the aim of extending the microstructure-property correlation. Inherent difficulties limiting extensive studies of organic solids by SEM, including volatility under vacuum, charging due to electron beam irradiation, and air-sensitivity were overcome with the use of a Field Emission SEM and cryostage attachment. This technique, providing considerable improvements in image quality at low accelerating voltages, enabled direct observation of complex microstructural features in samples exhibiting high temperature plastic crystalline phases (N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P11BF4]; N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P12BF4]; N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate [P13BF4]). Extensive lattice imperfections including grain boundaries, slip planes and dislocation pits were observed within particles of approximately 200 mgrm diameter. The N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (P14BF4) sample in this series revealed columnar single crystals with high aspect ratios. The origin of plastic flow properties is discussed using single crystal and polycrystalline slip observations and a relationship proposed between defect characteristics and transport properties.

We have achieved three-dimensional imaging of decanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on metal surfaces by atom probe tomography (APT). The present Letter provides preliminary results on Ni [001] and Au [111], shows the analytical potential of APT analysis of SAMs, and details developments in specimen preparation and in data-treatment methodologies. Importantly, the investigation of the mass spectra from analysis of the SAMs revealed no combination of sulfur and hydrogen at the interface between the metal substrates and the organic materials, potentially providing insight about the bonding of the thiols on the substrate.

Reports on the use of radially polarised beam in gold-nanorod-facilitated nonlinear microscopy and therapy. It has been found that the use of radially polarised beam can greatly reduce the energy fluence threshold for treating cancer cells labelled with gold nanorods. The slight distortion in the polarisation properties of the radially polarised beam after propagating through double-clad photonic crystal fibres makes it promising in the application of fibre-optic based endoscopic system.

The double layer structure of two ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-1- methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([Py 1,4]FAP) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate ([EMIm]FAP) at the polarized Au(111) electrode interface is probed using Atomic Force Microscopy force measurements. The force-separation profiles suggest a multilayered morphology is present at the electrified Au(111)-IL interface, with more near surface layers detected at higher potentials. At the (slightly negative) open circuit potential, multiple ion layers are present, and the innermost layer, in contact with the Au(111) surface, is enriched in the cation due to electrostatic adsorption. Upon applying negative electrode potentials (-1.0 V, -2.0 V), stronger IL near surface structure is detected: both the number of ion layers and the force required to rupture these layers increases. Positive electrode potentials (+1.0 V, +2.0 V) also enhance IL near surface structure, but not as much as negative potentials, because surface-adsorbed anions are less effective at templating structure in subsequent layers than cations. This interfacial structure is not consistent with a double layer in the Stern-Gouy-Chapman sense, as there is no diffuse layer. The structure is consistent with a capicitative double-layer model, with a very small separation distance between the planes of charge.

Development of the dielectrophoretic (DEP) live cell trapping technology and its interfacing with the environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is described. DEP microelectrode arrays were fabricated on glass substrate using photolithography and lift-off. Chip-based arrays were applied for ESEM analysis of DEP-trapped human leukemic cells. This work provides proof-of-concept interfacing of the DEP cell retention and trapping technology with ESEM to provide a high-resolution analysis of individual nonadherent cells.

This work has focused on measuring the adhesion forces on both untreated and atmospheric helium plasma treated single jute fibre surfaces using scanning probe microscopy (SPM). The measurements were conducted on three differently aged surfaces for one week, three weeks and six weeks using a standard silicon nitride tip in force-volume (f-v) mode. Up to 256 adhesion data points were collected from various locations on the surface of the studied fibres using in-house developed software and the resulting data were statistically analysed by the histogram method. Results obtained from this analysis method were found to be very consistent with a small statistical variation. The work of adhesion, Wa, was calculated from measured adhesion force using the Johnson–Kendall–Roberts (JKR) and Derjaguin–Muller–Toporov (DMT) models. Increases in both adhesion force and work of adhesion were observed on jute fibre with certain levels of atmospheric plasma treatment and ageing time.
