The effect of emulsification on the styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) chemically modified bitumens (CMBs) is studied by conventional tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Compared to CMBs, modified bitumen emulsion residues (MBERs) exhibit higher temperature susceptibility, inferior resistant to cracking and deformation, lower elastic recovery and storage stability whereas these properties are improved substantially relative to base bitumens. DSC results show that the thermostability of CMBs decreased slightly after emulsification which indicate the emulsification exerts very little effect on the thermal property of CMBs. The FTIR results do not indicate any chemical reaction exists on CMBs during the emulsification.

Percolative dielectric composites of sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone) (SPAEK) and acidified graphite nanosheets (AGSs) were fabricated by a solution method. The dielectric constant of the as-prepared composite with 4.01 vol % AGSs was found to be 330 at 1000 Hz; this was a significant increase compared to that of pure SPAEK. Through the calculation, a low percolation threshold of the AGS/SPAEK composite was confirmed at 3.18 vol % (0.0318 volume fraction) AGSs; this was attributed to the large surface area and high conductivity of the AGSs. Additionally, our percolative dielectric composites also exhibited good mechanical performances and good thermostability, with a tensile strength of 71.7 MPa, a tensile modulus of 1.91 GPa, a breaking elongation of 16.4%, and a mass loss temperature at 5% of 336°C.

Previous research focused on pretreatment of biomass, production of fermentable sugars and their consumption to produce ethanol. The main goal of the work was to economise the production process cost of fermentable sugars. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to investigate enzyme hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose and hemp hurds (natural cellulosic substrate) using free and immobilised enzymes. Cellulase from Trichoderma reesei was immobilised on an activated magnetic support by covalent binding and its activity was compared with that of the free enzyme to hydrolyse microcrystalline cellulose and hemp hurds on the basis of thermostability and reusability.
