A porous Ti–18 at.%Nb–4 at.%Sn (hereafter, Ti–18Nb–4Sn) alloy was prepared by powder metallurgy. The porous structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the phase constituents were analysed by X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties of the porous alloy were investigated using a compressive test. To enhance the bioactivity of the alloy surface, alkali-heat treatment was used to modify the surface. The bioactivity of the pre-treated alloy sample was investigated using a biomimetic process by soaking the sample into simulated body fluid (SBF). Results indicate that the elastic modulus and plateau stress of the porous Ti–18Nb–4Sn alloy decrease with decreasing relative density. The mechanical properties of the porous alloy can be tailored to match those of human bone. After soaking in SBF for 7 days, a hydroxyapatite layer formed on the surface of the pre-treated porous Ti–18Nb–4Sn alloy. The pre-treated porous Ti–18Nb–4Sn alloy therefore has the potential to be a bioactive implant material.

A porous Ti-16Sn-4Nb alloy with an average pore size of 300 µm and porosity of 60 % was prepared by powder metallurgy, and a bone-like apatite coating was obtained by soaking the samples in a concentrated simulated body fluid (lOx SBF). The changes of the microstructure and composition on the surface with soaking time were investigated by using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), The bone-like apatite granules started to deposit throughout the porous Ti alloy foam aner 1 h soaking, and the number of granules increased with the increase of the soaking time. A uniform bone-like apatite layer covered the entire surface of the sample after soaking in Ihe lOx SBF for 6h. The Ti-16Sn-4Nb foam showed a good bioactivity after a thermochemical process and soaking into a 1Ox SBF.

In this paper nanocrystallite apatite coating on TiZr substrate was prepared by a biomimetic process. Surface morphology, thickness, crystalline phases a~nd bond strength of the coating were investigated by SEM, XRD and tensIle test, respectively. Results show that the apatite coating exhibIts a nanocrystalIite structure with similar stoichiometry to that of natural bone. The apatite layer becomes thicker with the increasing of the SBF immersion time and is firmly adhered to the substrate with the highest average bond strength of 15.5 MPa. This nanocrystallite apatite coating is expected to bond to surrounding bone tissue directly in vivo after implantation.

The health benefits of antioxidant-rich ‘Mediterranean’ type diets high in grain, olives and red wine are well recognised. Since these foodstuffs consist of a complex matrix of chemical components, to date, the primary challenge lies in prioritising and isolating molecules for a physiologically relevant cell culture assay to assess their human health benefits. Currently, the most common approach requires arduous sample fractionation into smaller ‘crude’ extracts, followed by costly cell culture assays, with the bioactive identified only after a positive response in the cell. The work presented within this poster demonstrates the potential for an acidified potassium permanganate chemiluminescence detector as a much simpler screening tool to identify the best bioactive candidates from a complex sample matrix.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) was coated on the surface of a titanium-niobium (Ti-Nb) alloy by a sol-gel process. Triethyl phosphite and calcium nitrate were used as the phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) precursors respectively to prepare a Ca/P sol solution. The Ti-Nb alloy was dip-coated in the sol and heated at 600°C for 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the major phase constituent of the coating after heat treatment was HA. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that a few cracks were distributed on the HA coating. The in-vitro bioactivity of the HA coated Ti-Nb alloy was assessed using a cell culture of SaOS-2 osteoblast-like cells. The density of cell attachment was determined by MTT assay; the cell morphology was observed by SEM. Results indicated that the density of cell attachment on the surface of the Ti-Nb alloy was significantly increased by HA coating. Cell morphology observation showed that cells attached, spread and grew well on the HA coated surface. It can be concluded that the HA coating improved the in-vitro bioactivity of Ti-Nb alloy effectively.

Porous Ti-Mo alloy samples with different porosities from 52% to 72% were successfully fabricated by the space-holder sintering method. The pore size of the porous Ti-Mo alloy samples were ranged from 200 to 500 μm. The plateau stress and elastic modulus of the porous Ti-Mo alloy samples increases with the decreasing of the porosity. Moreover, an apatite coating on the Ti-Mo alloy after an alkali and heat treatment was obtained through soaking into a simulated body fluid (SBF). The porous Ti-Mo alloy provides promising potential for new implant materials with new bone tissue ingrowth ability, bioactivity and mechanical properties mimicking those of natural bone.

This project has been concerned with the development of controlled release formulations of the herbicide atrazine and the pesticide chlorpyrifos. The results of both chemical and biological evaluation show that these controlled release formulations can significantly reduce leaching and therefore ground water pollution of atrazine without losing herbicidal potency in the early stages after application.

Smooth polymerized surfaces, suitable for biochemical and biomedical applications, were deposited using a modified plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition method with acetylene as a reaction precursor. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) activity assays showed that the protein immobilized on the plasma polymerized surfaces maintained its biological function for a much longer period of time compared to that on uncoated surfaces. The kinetics of HRP attachment to the plasma polymerized surfaces were analyzed using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation analysis. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the thickness and the quantity of the attached protein. The results showed that the plasma polymerized surfaces provided a high density of attachment sites to covalently immobilize a dense monolayer of proteins.

The composition of milk includes factors required to provide appropriate nutrition for the growth of the neonate. However, it is now clear that milk has many functions and comprises bioactive molecules that play a central role in regulating developmental processes in the young while providing a protective function for both the suckled young and the mammary gland during the lactation cycle. Identifying these bioactives and their physiological function in eutherians can be difficult and requires extensive screening of milk components that may function to improve well-being and options for prevention and treatment of disease. New animal models with unique reproductive strategies are now becoming increasingly relevant to search for these factors.

Dietary proteins from soybeans have been shown to offer health benefits in vivo and/or in vitro either as intact proteins or in partially digested forms also called bioactive peptides. Upon oral administration and absorption, soy-derived bioactive peptides may induce several physiological responses such as antioxidative, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, anticancer and immunomodulatory effects. There has therefore been a mounting research interest in the therapeutic potential of soy protein hydrolysates and their subsequent incorporation in functional foods and 'Food for Specified Health Uses' (FOSHU) related products where their biological activities may assist in the promotion of good health or in the control and prevention of diseases. This mini review discusses relevant patents and gives an overview on bioactive proteins and peptides obtainable from soybeans. Processes for the production and formulation of these peptides are given, together with specific examples of their therapeutic potential and possible areas of application.

Food protein-derived bioactive peptides (BPs) have been reported to trigger certain physiological responses in the body, thereby influencing health positively. These peptides have attracted high research and consumer interests due to their huge potential of use in functional foods and other dietary interventions of disease control and health promotion. However, successful product development is limited by the fact that current manufacturing processes are either difficult to scale up, high in cost, or have the potential to affect the structure-activity properties of these peptides. To overcome these challenges, we have proposed in this review, the use of an integrated ‘-omics’ approach comprising in silico analysis and ‘-omics’ techniques (such as peptidomics) to respectively forecast and validate the biological and physico-chemical properties of the peptides. This information is then used for the rational design of suitable purification steps for peptides of interest. Downstream purification could also be undertaken by liquid chromatography using monolithic adsorbents physico-chemically engineered (using results of in silico analysis) for rapid isolation of peptides. By coupling the high throughput and predictive capability of ‘-omics’ to the enhanced convective hydrodynamics of monolithic columns, it becomes feasible, even at preparative scale, to produce BPs that meet the requirements of high purity, potency, and cost-effectiveness.
