Nodularised Ductile Cast Iron, when subjected to heat treatment processes - austenitising and austempering produces Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI). The microstructure of ADI also known as "ausferrite" consists of ferrite, austenite and graphite nodules. Machining ADI using conventional techniques is often a problematic issue due to the microstructural phase transformation from austenite to martensite during machining. This paper evaluates the wear characteristics of ultra hard cutting tools when machining ADI and its effect on machinability. Machining trials consist of turning ADI (ASTMGrade3) using two sets of PCBN tools with 90% and 50% CBN content and two sets of ceramics tools; Aluminium Oxide Titanium Carbide and Silicon Carbide - whisker reinforced Ceramic. The cutting parameters chosen are categorized as roughing and finishing conditions; the roughing condition comprises of constant cutting speed (425 m/min) and depth of cut (2mm) combined with variable feed rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4mm/rev. The finishing condition comprises of constant cutting speed (700 m/min) and depth of cut (0.5mm) combined with variable feed rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4mm/rev. The benchmark condition to evaluate the performance of the cutting tools was tool wear evaluation, surface texture analysis and cutting force analysis. The paper analyses thermal softening of the workpiece by the tool and its effect on the shearing mechanism under rough and finish machining conditions in term of lower cutting forces and enhanced surface texture of the machined part.

Pretty vacancy: The formation energy of Al vacancies in aluminum nitride is decreased by doping with nonmagnetic scandium ions. These vacancies are shown to be the cause of the room-temperature ferromagnetism in the resulting 1D hexagonal nanoprisms of AlN:Sc, a result that is confirmed by first-principles calculations. The doping approach provides a new route to dilute magnetic semiconductor materials.

The introduction of a social software blog space called the Trading Room in an undergraduate finance unit generated a great deal of activity to support student learning. A subsequent evaluation of this innovation, viewed through the lens of Activity Theory, demonstrated that students perceived high value in the opportunity it provided for them to reaffirm theories, obtain individualised feedback and benchmark their work against others. While assessment is generally seen as the carrot and the stick of learning; students in the study reported that they would still participate in reading and posting to the Trading Room even if there was no assessment requirement. Students did not see any value in the environment as a purely social space, reporting that they saw it primarily as a professional educational community. It would appear that just as there are different communities in the real world social space, there are also different types of communities in the online space.

Reports an exploratory practitioner-initiated study that developed and implemented an online questionnaire to collect data from PLT students in three states, regarding their satisfaction with online discussions. Students’ perceptions of ‘community of inquiry framework’ elements, Marzano and Kendall’s ‘self-system’ factors, and other contextual aspects, were investigated and tested for correlations. The study found student satisfaction with the online discussions was most closely associated with ‘teaching presence’. Students’ satisfaction with student-student interactions was closely associated with ‘self-system’ factors.

As-cast AZ80 Mg alloy contains α-Mg, partially divorce eutectic of α and γ (Mg 17Al 12), fully divorce eutectic of α and γ, and lamellar eutectic of α and γ phases. During homogenization, second phase (γ-Mg 17Al 12) gets dissolved can change the mechanical properties. Therefore, the aim of the present work is to bring out the kinetics of dissolution of γ phase and evaluate its effect on mechanical properties. Microstructure evolution during homogenization was investigated as a function of time for 0.5 to 100 h and at the temperatures of 400° and 439°C. In as-cast state, this material was found to contain 70% α-Mg and 30% eutectic phase. With increasing homogenization time, dissolution of lamellar eutectic occurs first which is followed by dissolution of fully divorce eutectic and partially divorce eutectic. The dissolution kinetics of γ phase was analyzed based on the decrease in its volume fraction as a function of time. The time exponent for dissolution was found to be 0.38 and the activation energy for the dissolution of γ phase was found to be 84.1 kJ/mol. This dissolution of γ phase leads to decrease in hardness and tensile strength with increase in homogenization time.
