Examines the biochemistry and physiology of chlorophyllase in the marine angiosperm Zostera muelleri. Enzyme activity was found to be highly correlated with chlorophyll synthesis in developing leaf tissue. This study provides evidence for the physiological role of chlorophyllase in chlorophyll degradation and provides insights into the senescence process in seagrass.

Genetically engineered vaccinia viruses are potential candidates for vaccine construction. This study investigated the vaccinia virus B15R gene, which is involved in modulating virulence. Genetically engineered vaccinia viruses were constructed to evaluate the influence of the B15R gene on the ability of these viruses to induce an immune response against a foreign antigen.

The idea that plant development and physiological responses to the environment are governed largely by the five classical hormones is being superseded by the view that a much larger range of very different molecules also have such functions in plants. Recent evidence suggests that natriuretic peptides (NPs) known to function in vertebrates as regulators of salt and water balance may also play this role in plants. This thesis adds experimental results obtained in vitro and in situ that contribute to further establishing NPs as novel endogenous regulators in plants.

The natriuretic peptide system of mammals is important in the control of blood volume but its function in non-mammalian animals is unclear. This study identified a functional natriuretic peptide system in an amphibian and showed that the hormones are involved in the control of fluid balance.

The exchange of sodium and protons across the gills of fishes has long been associated with osmoregulatory and acid-base regulatory mechanisms in both freshwater and marine fishes. This thesis identifies several types of sodium/proton exchangers in the gills of fishes from different taxonomic classes. In addition, it was observed that the expression of sodium/proton exchanger messenger RNA was upregulated for 24 hours following induced metabolic acidosis in the Atlantic hagfish suggesting that sodium/proton exchangers have functioned in acid/base regulation from early in vertebrate history.

The research was a detailed investigation into a challenging analytical chemistry problem for the alumina industry. The successful outcomes were derived through innovative reagent chemistry and novel instrumental development. The resultant methodology and instrumentation deployed on this most demanding sample matrix is more robust, reliable and less expensive than anything currently used in this industry worldwide.

A group specific ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) was developed to detect virus infection associated antibodies in the serum of animals infected with any serotype of foot and mouth disease virus. The assay was developed from non-infectious sources, and is therefore suitable for use in countries where FMDV is exotic.

Lichen floristics and distribution patterns were studied in Victorian cool temperate rainforests. 165 lichens were found, representing 37 families. Thirty of these species were newly reported in Victoria. Rainforest type, age and level of disturbance, and host tree species and size were found to effect lichen abundance and community composition.

Haliotids are expensive seafood molluscs known as abalone. The research involved cloning and expression of genes involved with their reproduction, including some involved with female egg-laying. Genes characterised in this study were put into bacteria to make reproductive molecules which were then injected into abalone to induce spawning. The results provide important information towards abalone cultivation.

Missions were not simply sites of modernity, they were also the source of key data for the modernist theories of human progress. The idea that so called “primitive peoples” provided a window to the origins of human institutions seemed axiomatic to nineteenth-century theorists of human society who sought evidence for these ideas from settlers, administrators and particularly missionaries. The 1870s and 1880s were the high point of missionary engagement with study-bound anthropologists, as questionnaires and letters were sent from the centres to the edges of empires. Missionary responses, augmented with settler and explorer observations, became the footnotes in early anthropological texts on “primitive” societies. These analyses were then mined for the foundation texts of the other social sciences in the late nineteenth century. Along with many other scholars, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels read the anthropology of the period and slotted the findings into their analyses of human society.

Natural organic matter (NOM) in water contains organic compounds that are both hydrophobic and hydrophilic with a wide range of molecular weights. It is composed of non-homogeneous organic compounds such as humic substances, amino acids, sugars, aliphatic and aromatic acids, and other chemical synthetic organic matters. NOM in water is a major concern not only because of its contribution to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and taste and odor, but also its influence on the demand for coagulants and disinfectants, the removal efficiency of water treatment processes, etc. This research aims at identifying the influence of NOM in coagulation and flocculation processes in order to optimize the coagulation and flocculation conditions. In this study, pretreated pond water was used as the source water. It was observed from the experimental results that: (1) The optimum pH for coagulation to remove NOM is around 7. (2) The optimum alum dose at this pH can vary from 125-1,225 mgl-1 when the TOC is increased from 4 to 25 mgl-1. (3) The presence of secondary compounds such as Ca2+, Mg2+ divalent cations had no significant effect on the removal of organic matter. (4) The presence of clay increased the organic removal by 15%. (5) The organic compound with higher molecular weight has higher removal affinity in coagulation process. (6) Floc size and settling velocity of floc and sludge production all increased with the increase in NOM concentration. From the results of Capillary Suction Time (CST) tests, the floc formed with lower TOC readily released the water to make the dewatering process easier. (7) The organic removal efficiency was significantly different for natural water containing non-homogeneous organic compounds compared to the synthetic water containing humic acid only (homogeneous organic matter). For example, the NOM removal efficiency was 80% for the synthetic water containing humic acid with TOC of 7 mgl-1 at pH 7; but the NOM removal for the pretreated pond water was 60%.
