This paper discusses an attempt to examine pre-service teachers’ mathematical modelling skills. A modelling project investigating relationships between temperature and time in the process of cooling of coffee was chosen. The analysis was based on group written reports of the cooling of coffee project and observation of classroom discussion. Findings showed that pre-service teachers were able to model the process of cooling of coffee as a decreasing exponential function. Difficulties with interpretation of the constant rate of cooling and reinterpretation of mathematical model were identified.

An assessment model is usually a mathematical model that produces a measuring index, in the form of a numerical score to a situation/object, with respect to the subject of measure. To allow a valid and useful comparison among various situations/objects according to their associated numerical scores to be made, two important properties, i.e., the monotone output property and output resolution properties, are essential in fuzzy inference-based assessment problems. In this paper, the conditions for a fuzzy assessment model to fulfill the monotone output property is investigated using a derivative approach. A guideline on how the input membership functions should be tuned is also provided. Besides, the output resolution property is defined as the derivative of the output of the assessment model with respect to the input, whereby the derivative should be greater than a minimum resolution. Based on the derivative, improvements to the output resolution property by refining the fuzzy production rules are suggested. A case study on the Bowles fuzzy RPN model to demonstrate the effectiveness of the properties is also included.

An assessment model is a mathematical model that produces a measuring index, either in the form of a numerical score or a category to a situation/object, with respect to the subject of measure. From the numerical score, decision can be made and action can be taken. To allow valid and useful comparisons among various situations/objects according to their associated numerical scores to be made, the monotone output property and the output resolution property are essential in fuzzy inference-based assessment problems. We investigate the conditions for a fuzzy assessment model to fulfill the monotone output property using a derivative approach. A guideline on how the input membership functions should be tuned is also provided. Besides, the output resolution property is defined as the derivative of the output of the assessment model with respect to its input. This derivative should be greater than the minimum resolution required. From the derivative, we suggest improvements to the output resolution property by refining the fuzzy production rules.

A mathematical model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects in an aluminium cell using numerical approximation of a finite element method is presented. The model predicts the current distribution in the cell and calculates the Lorentz force from the external magnetic field in molten metal for cathode blocks with different surface inclinations.

The findings indicated that the cathode surface inclinations have significant influence on cathode current density and Lorentz field distribution in the molten metal. The results establish a trend for the current density and associated MHD force distributions with increase in cathode inclination angle, φ. It has been found that cathode with φ = 5o inclination could decrease 16 to 20 % of Lorentz force in the molten metal.

Identification of the most central node within a network is one of the primary problems in network analysis. Among various centrality measures for weighted networks, most are based on the assumption that information only spreads through the shortest paths. Then, a mathematical model of an amoeboid organism has been used by Physarum centrality to relax the assumption. However, its computational complexity is relatively high by finding competing paths between all pairs of nodes in networks. In this paper, with the idea of a ground node, an improved Physarum centrality is proposed by maintaining the feature of original measure with the performance is greatly enhanced. Examples and applications are given to show the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed measure in weighted networks.

Analysis of previously published records shows that the modal size of juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) found around the United Kingdom (the area north of 49°N and east of 12°W) is a carapace length of 20.5 cm. These turtles are believed to originate from nesting beaches in North America (principally Florida). We estimated their trans-Atlantic drift time using data from satellite-tracked buoys and from a mathematical model and, hence, estimated that the modal age of these juvenile turtles was between 1.80 and 3.75 years.

Cloud is becoming a dominant computing platform. However, we see few work on how to protect cloud data centers. As a cloud usually hosts many different type of applications, the traditional packet level firewall mechanism is not suitable for cloud platforms in case of complex attacks. It is necessary to perform anomaly detection at the event level. Moreover, protecting objects are more diverse than the traditional firewall. Motivated by this, we propose a general framework of cloud firewall, which features event level detection chain with dynamic resource allocation. We establish a mathematical model for the proposed framework. Moreover, a linear resource investment function is proposed for economical dynamical resource allocation for cloud firewalls. A few conclusions have been extracted for the reference of cloud service providers and designers.

The charging of an undivided cerium–zinc redox battery by various current waveforms some of which mimic the output of renewable energy (solar, wind, tidal, biofuel burning) to electricity transducers is considered in this work, where the battery operates through diffusion-only conditions, and is discharged galvanostatically. Under reasonable assumption, the mathematical model developed enables the observation that the performance characteristic of the cells charged with a constant power input differentiates between the various current–charge waveforms, with cell geometry and electrode kinetics playing subtle, but significant, roles; in particular, high efficiency is observed for sunlight-charged batteries which are thin and suffer no corrosion of the sacrificial electrode, and which have already experienced a charge–discharge cycle. The performance characteristics of the systems are interpreted in the light of consequences for smart grid realisation, and indicate that, for a constant power input, the most matched renewable is biofuel burning with a current output that linearly increases with time.

Although the method of external attachment of CFRP to the concrete members is the most effective and economical solution for strengthening and repairing concrete structure in the century, the bonding issue between CFRP and the hosting surface still a challenge for the structural engineers. Many solutions are proposed to overcome the early debonding failure in the strengthened members. This paper reports an ongoing experimental program for testing CFRP retrofitted RC beams and slabs. Fifteen RC beams of dimensions 150x250x2300mm and twelve two- way RC slabs of size 85x1670x1670mm will be strengthened using different types of epoxies, different configurations and variable number of layers of CFRP strips (MBrace-230). Rubber modified epoxy will be used for carbon fibre external attachment using wet lay-up method. Loading frame of 500 kN capacity will be used for beams testing. While for applying uniformly distributed load on the slabs a purpose built attachment will be used. The experimental results will report on the ultimate load, failure mode, mid-span deflection, strains readings in different locations and the ductility for both groups of strengthened beams and slabs. A mathematical model will be developed to predict the behavior of RC beams and two-way slabs.

Ionic polymer conductive network composite (IPCNC) actuators are a class of electroactive polymer composites that exhibit some interesting electromechanical characteristics such as low voltage actuation, large displacements, and benefit from low density and elastic modulus. Thus, these emerging materials have potential applications in biomimetic and biomedical devices. Whereas significant efforts have been directed toward the development of IPMC actuators, the establishment of a proper mathematical model that could effectively predict the actuators' dynamic behavior is still a key challenge. This paper presents development of an effective modeling strategy for dynamic analysis of IPCNC actuators undergoing large bending deformations. The proposed model is composed of two parts, namely electrical and mechanical dynamic models. The electrical model describes the actuator as a resistive-capacitive (RC) transmission line, whereas the mechanical model describes the actuator as a system of rigid links connected by spring-damping elements. The proposed modeling approach is validated by experimental data, and the results are discussed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Adsorption of target molecules on the immobilized microcantilever surface produced beam displacement due to the differential surface stress generated between the immobilized and non-immobilized surface. Surface stress is caused by the intermolecular forces between the molecules. Van der Waals, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effect and steric hindrance are some of the intermolecular forces involved. A theoretical framework describing the adsorption-induced microcantilever displacement is derived in this paper. Experimental displacement of thrombin aptamer-thrombin interactions was carried out. The relation between the electrostatic interactions involved between adsorbates (thrombin) as well as adsorbates and substrates (thrombin aptamer) and the microcantilever beam displacement utilizing the proposed mathematical model was quantified and compared to the experimental value. This exercise is important to aid the designers in microcantilever sensing performance optimization.

As shortest path (SP) problem has been one of the most fundamental network optimization problems for a long time, technologies for this problem are still being studied. In this paper, a new method by integrating a path finding mathematical model, inspired by Physarum polycephalum, with extracted one heuristic rule to solve SP problem has been proposed, which is called Rapid Physarum Algorithm (RPA). Simulation experiments have been carried out on three different network topologies with varying number of nodes. It is noted that the proposed RPA can find the optimal path as the path finding model does for most networks. What is more, experimental results show that the performance of RPA surpasses the path finding model on both iterations and solution time. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
