This paper presents the design and numerical simulation of a T-shape microfluidic electroosmotic micromixer. It is equipped with six microelectrodes that are embedded in the side surfaces of the microchannel. The electrode array consists of two sets of three 20 ¿m and 60 ¿m microelectrodes arranged in the form of two opposing triangles. Numerical analysis of electric potential and frequency effects on mixing efficiency of the micromixer is carried out by means of two sets of simulations. First, the electric potential is kept at 2 V while the frequency is varied within 10-50 Hz. The highest achieved mixing efficiency is 96% at 22 Hz. Next, the frequency is kept at 30 Hz whilst the electric potential is varied within 1-5 V. The best achieved mixing efficiency is 97% at 3 V.

In this study, we demonstrate that fabrics having a wettability gradient from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic through the thickness direction show a novel directional water transfer effect: water can transfer from the superhydrophobic to the hydrophilic side, but not in the opposite direction unless an external force is applied. A sol-gel technology was used to prepare a nano-structured superhydrophobic coating on fabrics, and the coated fabrics showed water contact-angle as high as 165 degrees. When the coated fabric was subjected to a photochemistry treatment from one fabric side, the irradiated surface turned hydrophilic permanently, while the back side still maintained the superhydrophobicity. The treated fabric can transfer water droplet rapidly from hydrophobic to hydrophilic side, and the pressure allowing water breakthrough the fabric are different considerably between the two fabric sides. The directional water transfer effect is affected by the wettability gradient. Such a directional water transfer coating may be useful to develop new functional fabrics for defence applications.

This paper reviews melatonin as an overlooked factor in the developmental etiology and maintenance of schizophrenia; the neuroimmune and oxidative pathophysiology of schizophrenia; specific symptoms in schizophrenia, including sleep disturbance; circadian rhythms; and side effects of antipsychotics, including tardive dyskinesia and metabolic syndrome. Electronic databases, i.e. PUBMED, Scopus and Google Scholar were used as sources for this review using keywords: schizophrenia, psychosis, tardive dyskinesia, antipsychotics, metabolic syndrome, drug side effects and melatonin. Articles were selected on the basis of relevance to the etiology, course and treatment of schizophrenia. Melatonin levels and melatonin circadian rhythm are significantly decreased in schizophrenic patients. The adjunctive use of melatonin in schizophrenia may augment the efficacy of antipsychotics through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. Further, melatonin would be expected to improve sleep disorders in schizophrenia and side effects of anti-psychotics, such as tardive dyskinesia, metaboilic syndrome and hypertension. It is proposed that melatonin also impacts on the tryptophan catabolic pathway via its effect on stress response and cortisol secretion, thereby impacting on cortex associated cognition, amygdala associated affect and striatal motivational processing. The secretion of melatonin is decreased in schizophrenia, contributing to its etiology, pathophysiology and management. Melatonin is likely to have impacts on the metabolic side effects of anti-psychotics that contribute to subsequent decreases in life-expectancy.

Context: Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is often ingested at a dose of 0.3 g/kg body mass (BM), but ingestion protocols are inconsistent in terms of using solution or capsules, ingestion period, combining NaHCO3 with sodium citrate (Na3C6H5O7), and coingested food and fluid. Purpose: To quantify the effect of ingesting 0.3 g/ kg NaHCO3 on blood pH, [HCO3 -], and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms over the subsequent 3 hr using a range of ingestion protocols and, thus, to determine an optimal protocol. Methods: In a crossover design, 13 physically active subjects undertook 8 NaHCO3 experimental ingestion protocols and 1 placebo protocol. Capillary blood was taken every 30 min and analyzed for pH and [HCO3 -]. GI symptoms were quantified every 30 min via questionnaire. Statistics used were pairwise comparisons between protocols; differences were interpreted in relation to smallest worthwhile changes for each variable. A likelihood of >75% was a substantial change. Results: [HCO3 -] and pH were substantially greater than in placebo for all other ingestion protocols at almost all time points. When NaHCO3 was coingested with food, the greatest [HCO3 -] (30.9 mmol/kg) and pH (7.49) and lowest incidence of GI symptoms were observed. The greatest incidence of GI side effects was observed 90 min after ingestion of 0.3 g/kg NaHCO3 solution. Conclusions: The changes in pH and [HCO3 -] for the 8 NaHCO3-ingestion protocols were similar, so an optimal protocol cannot be recommended. However, the results suggest that NaHCO3 coingested with a high-carbohydrate meal should be taken 120-150 min before exercise to induce substantial blood alkalosis and reduce GI symptoms. This study focuses on volume reduction of pre-treatment sludge as well as on dilution of reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate through emerging forward osmosis (FO) technology where RO concentrate draws water from the pre-treatment sludge (feed solution) in order to reduce pre-treatment sludge volume and increase the RO water recovery. Experiments were carried out using two different types of sludge i.e. (1) synthetic pre-treatment sludge (Lab sludge) which has lower salinity and (2) actual sludge from Perth Seawater Desalination Plant, Australia (Perth Seawater Desalination Plant (PSDP) sludge) which has higher salinity. Effect of membrane orientation (FO and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) modes) and temperature of pre-treatment sludge on permeate water flux was investigated. There was a significant increase in water flux from 3.2 to 10.2 LMH (i.e. ~3 times higher) when temperature increased from 20 to 40°C for Lab sludge in PRO mode. However, there is no significant effect of temperature on water flux in FO mode for Lab sludge. On the contrary for PSPD sludge, there was no effect on water flux with increase in temperature at PRO mode. Dissolved ions in the porous side increased the severity of concentrative internal concentration polarization; hence, it could reduce the flux. There was no significant change in water flux when temperature increased from 20 to 40°C for PSDP sludge in FO mode. However, higher amount of water has permeated from Lab sludge compared to PSDP sludge in FO mode. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. All rights reserved.

In this study, different combinations of feed stream such as 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 M of CaCl2 were, respectively, added with 1.0, 0.9 and 0.8 M of NaCl while maintaining the draw solution concentration at either 2.0 M of NaCl or CaCl2 in order to compare likely changes to the flux generated when the feed stream contained NaCl only. The results obtained showed that more constituents in feed stream generated lesser flux. Increase in CaCl2 concentration in feed stream resulted in more severe dilutive internal concentration polarisation (DICP) and hence, reduction in the performance ratio. The temperature and distribution of aggregated particle size also played a significant role in the overall performance of forward osmosis process. Further analysis showed that there is a relationship between the normalised driving force and flux behaviour which is governed by the effect of DICP. Additionally, the reflection coefficient was not unity as less than 2% traces of salt was found to permeate alongside with water towards the draw solution side. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. It is known that tailoring a hot stamping part, to achieve locally graded properties, can improve the crash behavior. Depending on the role of the structural part (carrying either bending or axial crash load), the best position for the local regions with lower strength and higher ductility can be different. The distribution of these local regions and their mechanical properties affects the crash behavior of the part in each loading case and therefore can be effectively designed to improve the crash performance. To investigate these effects and examine the improvement possibilities, a numerical thermalmechanical-metallurgical model of a hot stamping process and a representative side impact crash model were created and analysed. The hot stamping model was used to predict the consequent phase fractions and mechanical properties of tailored hot stamping parts produced with different tailoring scenarios. In the metallurgical model, a modified phase transformation model based on Scheil’s additive principle was incorporated. The geometry and mesh of the stamped part was exported to a crash numerical model with a 3-point bending configuration. A constitutive model was used to define the plastic behavior of the stamped part corresponding to different hardness values. Various possibilities in locally positioning the high strength or high ductility zones of material were examined. The results show that the positioning of the soft zones has a more significant effect on the crash performance than the variation in their mechanical properties of these soft zones.

In our recent study, a bifacial fabric with a knitted structure on one side and a woven structure on the other side of the fabric was designed and manufactured for apparel applications. The physical properties of the bifacial fabrics were previously reported. In this study, bifacial fabrics with two different weft densities of 18 and 22 picks per cm in the woven structure and loop lengths of 10 and 11 mm in the knitted structure were prepared, then the air permeability of the fabrics was analyzed. The extension of the analysis of variance techniques was applied to the data. It was found that there were highly significant differences in the air permeability of bifacial fabrics with different weft densities and loop lengths, while the interaction between these two factors was not statistically significant in their effects on the air permeability. Briefly, increasing loop length increased air permeability, while air permeability decreased with an increase in weft density. This finding shows that fabric’s parameters can be manipulated to affect air permeability of the bifacial fabrics, and further to influence comfort properties of such novel fabrics.

Two types of directional water transport fabrics are prepared by using cotton fabric as substrate and an electrospraying technique to apply a hydrophobic coating on one side of the fabric. The main difference between the two electrosprayed fabrics is that one of them was precoated with a hydrophilic thermoconductive resin over the fiber surface prior to electrospraying. As a result, the precoated fabric has a much higher thermoconductivity than the other, while they are similar in water transport and fibrous structure. In the wet state, the directional water-transport fabrics generate a temperature difference between the two fabric sides while drying naturally. The fabric with higher thermal conductivity shows smaller temperature difference, better thermal transfer within the fabric, stronger evaporation cooling effect, and accelerated moisture evaporation. Directional water transport fabrics with high thermal conductivity may be used to mitigate thermal burden in sportswear, summer clothing, medical fabrics, and workwear.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: People with end-stage kidney disease receiving haemodialysis are restricted to holidays where dialysis services are readily available. Holiday dialysis in regional, rural and remote areas is particularly challenging. The aims of this study were to (1) evaluate the wellbeing of those who received dialysis in a holiday haemodialysis bus, and (2) to measure patient wellbeing with that of a comparable cohort of haemodialysis patients. METHODS: A three machine haemodialysis bus, the Big Red Kidney Bus, was built to enable people, their families and carers to take holidays across a range of tourist destinations in Victoria, Australia. Measures included pre-post subjective wellbeing, dialysis symptoms and mood questionnaires complemented by post semi-structured telephone interviews. RESULTS: Participating holidaymakers were positive about the haemodialysis bus service and the standard of care experienced. They reported decreased dialysis side effects of fatigue, muscle cramp, and dry skin. The overall number of reported symptoms decreased and the perceived level of bother associated with symptoms also decreased. No changes in subjective wellbeing and mood were detected. Mean Personal Wellbeing Index scores were significantly higher than in a comparative haemodialysis sample. CONCLUSION: The Big Red Kidney Bus provided a safe and feasible holiday dialysis service. Holidaymakers' wellbeing was reflected by the decreased dialysis patient side effects.
