A multi-resolution technique for matching a stereo pair of images based on translation invariant discrete multi-wavelet transform is presented. The technique uses the well known coarse to fine strategy, involving the calculation of matching points at the coarsest level with consequent refinement up to the finest level. Vector coefficients of the wavelet transform modulus are used as matching features, where modulus maxima defines the shift invariant high-level features (multiscale edges) with phase pointing to the normal of the feature surface. The technique addresses the estimation of optimal corresponding points and the corresponding 2D disparity maps. Illuminative variation that can exist between the perspective views of the same scene is controlled using scale normalization at each decomposition level by dividing the details space coefficients with approximation space and then using normalized correlation. The problem of ambiguity, explicitly, and occlusion, implicitly, is addressed by using a geometric topological refinement procedure and symbolic tagging.

Current ammunition Doppler radar systems use Fourier spectrogram for the joint time-frequency analysis (JFTA) of the radar signals. Two wavelet-based systems are presented for the JFTA of the radar signals. This research concludes that the proposed wavelet-based implementations are able to overcome this resolution limitation of the Fourier spectrogram method.

A complete and highly robust 3D reconstruction algorithm based on stereo vision is presented. The developed system is capable of reconstructing dimensionally accurate 3D models of the objects and is very simple and cost effective due to its prominent software dependency and minimal hardware involvevment unlike existing systems.

This paper presents the use of the wavelet transform to extract fiber surface texture features for classifying cashmere and superfine merino wool fibers. Extracting features from brightness variations caused by the cuticular scale height, shape and interval provides an effective way for characterizing different animal fibers and subsequently classifying them. This may enable the development of a completely automated and objective system for animal fiber identification.

In this paper, we investigate the use of a wavelet transform-based analysis of audio tracks accompanying videos for the problem of automatic program genre detection. We compare the classification performance based on wavelet-based audio features to that using conventional features derived from Fourier and time analysis for the task of discriminating TV programs such as news, commercials, music shows, concerts, motor racing games, and animated cartoons. Three different classifiers namely the Decision Trees, SVMs, and k-Nearest Neighbours are studied to analyse the reliability of the performance of our wavelet features based approach. Further, we investigate the issue of an appropriate duration of an audio clip to be analyzed for this automatic genre determination. Our experimental results show that features derived from the wavelet transform of the audio signal can very well separate the six video genres studied. It is also found that there is no significant difference in performance with varying audio clip durations across the classifiers.

Random fluctuations of the electrical quantities (electrode potential and cell current) in electrochemical systems commonly are referred to as electrochemical noise (ECN). The ECN signal for the corrosion of mild steel in reinforced concrete specimen was analyzed with the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). The original signal was transformed into a time-frequency phase plane with colors representing the coefficients of the CWT. The signal shows a self-similarity structure in the phase plane. Through this way, the chaotic nature of corrosion process is manifested.

In this paper, the Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) neural network is used to classify metal detector signals into different categories for automated target discrimination. Feature extraction of the metal detector signals is conducted using a wavelet transform technique. The FAM neural network is then employed to classify the extracted features into different target groups. A series of experiments using individual FAM networks and a voting FAM network is conducted. Promising classification accuracy rates are obtained from using individual and voting FAM networks, respectively. The experimental outcomes positively demonstrate the effectiveness of the generated features, and of the FAM network in classifying metal detector signals for automated target discrimination tasks.

This paper introduces a method to classify EEG signals using features extracted by an integration of wavelet transform and the nonparametric Wilcoxon test. Orthogonal Haar wavelet coefficients are ranked based on the Wilcoxon test’s statistics. The most prominent discriminant wavelets are assembled to form a feature set that serves as inputs to the naïve Bayes classifier. Two benchmark datasets, named Ia and Ib, downloaded from the brain–computer interface (BCI) competition II are employed for the experiments. Classification performance is evaluated using accuracy, mutual information, Gini coefficient and F-measure. Widely used classifiers, including feedforward neural network, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbours, ensemble learning Adaboost and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, are also implemented for comparisons. The proposed combination of Haar wavelet features and naïve Bayes classifier considerably dominates the competitive classification approaches and outperforms the best performance on the Ia and Ib datasets reported in the BCI competition II. Application of naïve Bayes also provides a low computational cost approach that promotes the implementation of a potential real-time BCI system.
