There is ample evidence that in many countries school science is in difficulty, with declining student attitudes and uptake of science. This presentation argues that a key to addressing the problem lies in transforming teachers’ classroom practice, and that pedagogical innovation is best supported within a school context. Evidence for effective change will draw on the School Innovation in Science (SIS) initiative in Victoria, which has developed and evaluated a model to improve science teaching and learning across a school system. The model involves a framework for describing effective teaching and learning, and a strategy that allows schools flexibility to develop their practice to suit local conditions and to maintain ownership of the change process. SIS has proved successful in improving science teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools. Experience from SIS and related projects, from a national Australian science and literacy project, and from system wide science initiatives in Europe, will be used to explore the factors that affect the success and the path of innovation in schools.

This paper draws on the findings from, and the methods and approach used, in the provision of a database of Australian PhD thesis records for the period 1987 to 2006, coded by Research Fields, Courses and Disciplines (RFCD) fields of study. The project was funded by the Research Excellence Branch of the Australian Research Council. Importantly, the project was not merely the creation of yet another database but constitutes a valuable research resource in its own right. It provides an alternative source of data about research training with a focus on research output and research capacity building rather than input as does data on enrolment. The database is significant as it can be used to track knowledge production in Australia over a twenty year period and contains approximately 54,000 bibliographic records. The database of Australian PhDs has been constructed from downloaded bibliographic records from Libraries Australia. Recommendations for practice relate to university libraries, doctoral candidates, and the coded database. We suggest that libraries are more consistent with cataloguing procedures, including the thesis ‘publication’ date, and that they are more timely in uploading their thesis records to Libraries Australia or, alternatively, Australian Research Online. We also suggest that PhD candidates code their own theses using the new ANZSRC scheme (which replaced the RFCD classification in 2008), and also use clear and communicative thesis titles and thesis abstracts. With regard to the coded database, we suggest it becomes a requirement for universities to provide the ANZSRC coding of submitted theses

Special interests (SIs) in autism spectrum disorders are a prevalent though relatively under-researched phenomenon. There was partial support for the hypotheses and factors influencing the relationship between SIs and mental health were identified. Findings contribute to a better understanding of SIs including their importance for individuals with ASD.

The implications of the transdisciplinary spatial turn are attract- ing growing interest in a broad range of areas related to education. This paper draws on a methodology for interdisciplinary thinking in order to articulate a new theoretical configuration of place-related identity, and its implications for a research agenda. The new configuration is created through an analy- sis of place-related identities in narrative theory, texts and literacy processes. The emerging research agenda focuses on the ways children perceive and rep- resent their place-related identities through reading and writing as inspired by and manifested in texts.

This paper introduces a new type of discriminative subgraph pattern called breaker emerging subgraph pattern by introducing three constraints and two new concepts: base and breaker. A breaker emerging sub-graph pattern consists of three subpatterns: a con-strained emerging subgraph pattern, a set of bases and a set of breakers. An efficient approach is pro-posed for the discovery of top-k breaker emerging sub-graph patterns from graph datasets. Experimental re-sults show that the approach is capable of efficiently discovering top-k breaker emerging subgraph patterns from given datasets, is more efficient than two previ-ous methods for mining discriminative subgraph pat-terns. The discovered top-k breaker emerging sub-graph patterns are more informative, more discrim-inative, more accurate and more compact than the minimal distinguishing subgraph patterns. The top-k breaker emerging patterns are more useful for sub-structure analysis, such as molecular fragment analy-sis. © 2009, Australian Computer Society, Inc.
