The rare earths have provided fascinating field for chemists confronted with problems of their separation and purification. The rare earths become available in relatively pure form in recent years due to the development of efficient separation methods, largely as a byproduct of the atomic energy programmes of various countries. The rare earths often called lanthanides from La (Z=57) to Lu (Z=7l) display subtle variation of properties through the series, while the differences become appreciable for the elements that are farther apart.

The present study on naoplankton is based on the isolation and development of unialgai culturas from the inshore waters at Cochin. characterization of their growth assimilation products. ecophysioiogy and evaluation of nutritional quality. The work was carried out during the period 1980-1983. The nanoplankters were isolated and grown in the labratory as batch cultures to study the increase in cell population, the photosynthetic pigment: ana physioiogical activity. The chemical composition of these organisms and their rate of excretion were also determined. The environmental factors physical and chemical that influence the growth of these Cultures were defined by conducting independentexperiments. These cultures of the isolated nanoplankters have raised indoor and fed to the larvae of edible oyster to test their suitability as live-food.

In the present study, fifteen typee of diseases occurring in twenty one species of finfishes end shellfishes are documented and the causes studied. All these are being reported from India for the first time which adds considerably to our existinq knowledge on the subject.In fact, the candidate's studies embodied in this Thesis has also an applied significance aimed at the proper management_of finfish and shellfish aquaculture systems in this country.The thesis is presented in seven main chapters.

the present study was undertaken with the following objectives: 1. Isolation and identification of yeasts from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. 2. Molecular characterization of yeast isolates and phylogenetic analysis 3. Physiological and biochemical characterization of the isolates. 4. Proximate composition of yeast biomass and bioactive compounds. The Thesis is comprised of six chapters. A general introduction to the topic is given in Chapter1. Isolation and identification of marine yeasts are presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 deals with molecular identification and physiological characterization of Non- pigmented yeasts. Molecular identification and physiological characterization of pigmented yeast is presented in Chapter 4. Proximate composition of yeast biomass of various genera and their bioactive compounds are illustrated in Chapter 5. A summary of the results of the present study is given in Chapter 6. Aeromonas spp. are ubiquitous aquatic organisms, associated with multitude of diseases in several species of animals, including fishes and humans. In the present study, water samples from two ornamental fish culture systems were analyzed for the presence of Aeromonas. Nutrient agar was used for Aeromonas isolation, and colonies (60 No) were identified through biochemical characterization. Seven clusters could be generated based on phenotypic characters, analyzed by the programme NTSYSpc, Version 2.02i, and identified as: Aeromonas caviae (33.3%), A. jandaei (38.3%) and A. veronii biovar sobria (28.3%). The strains isolated produced highly active hydrolytic enzymes, haemolytic activity and slime formation in varying proportions. The isolates were also tested for the enterotoxin genes (act, alt and ast), haemolytic toxins (hlyA and aerA), involved in type 3 secretion system (TTSS: ascV, aexT, aopP, aopO, ascF–ascG, and aopH), and glycerophospholipid-cholesterol acyltransferase (gcat). All isolates were found to be associated with at least one virulent gene. Moreover, they were resistant to frequently used antibiotics for human infections. The study demonstrates the pathogenic potential of Aeromonas, associated with ornamental fish culture systems suggesting the emerging threat to public health
