Veterinarians are increasingly faced with examining and/or treating marine mammals during strandings or following requests from theme parks and zoos. A common request involving seals and sea lions regards dentition, either to age a wild animal or as part of the routine health of captive animals. The major problem with examining dentition is the lack of information available in the literature on normal dentition, particularly in juveniles, where eruption patterns may be used to age the animal. The information presented in this report details typical deciduous dentition in one Californian sea lion, a species commonly encountered in captivity.

A three-and-a-half-year-old entire male Staffordshire Bull Terrier was presented with a cough and difficulty in swallowing. Two days later the dog was re-presented and a diagnosis of tetanus was made. An abscessed canine tooth was extracted and submitted for culture. Clostridium tetani was cultured from the pulp chamber of the tooth. The dog was treated with tetanus antitoxin, antibiotics and supportive care and made a complete recovery.

A combination of uni- and multiplex PCR assays targeting 58 virulence genes (VGs) associated with Escherichia coli strains causing intestinal and extraintestinal disease in humans and other mammals was used to analyze the VG repertoire of 23 commensal E. coli isolates from healthy pigs and 52 clinical isolates associated with porcine neonatal diarrhea (ND) and postweaning diarrhea (PWD). The relationship between the presence and absence of VGs was interrogated using three statistical methods. According to the generalized linear model, 17 of 58 VGs were found to be significant (P < 0.05) in distinguishing between commensal and clinical isolates. Nine of the 17 genes represented by iha, hlyA, aidA, east1, aah, fimH, iroN(E).(coli), traT, and saa have not been previously identified as important VGs in clinical porcine isolates in Australia. The remaining eight VGs code for fimbriae (F4, F5, F18, and F41) and toxins (STa, STh, LT, and Stx2), normally associated with porcine enterotoxigenic E. coli. Agglomerative hierarchical algorithm analysis grouped E. coli strains into subclusters based primarily on their serogroup. Multivariate analyses of clonal relationships based on the 17 VGs were collapsed into two-dimensional space by principal coordinate analysis. PWD clones were distributed in two quadrants, separated from ND and commensal clones, which tended to cluster within one quadrant. Clonal subclusters within quadrants were highly correlated with serogroups. These methods of analysis provide different perspectives in our attempts to understand how commensal and clinical porcine enterotoxigenic E. coli strains have evolved and are engaged in the dynamic process of losing or acquiring VGs within the pig population.

Objective-To estimate disease prevalence among dogs and cats in the United States and Australia and proportions of dogs and cats that receive therapeutic diets or dietary supplements. Design-Telephone survey. Sample Population-Dog and cat owners located in 5 geographic areas. Procedures-A telephone survey was administered to dog and cat owners. Results-Of 18,194 telephone calls that were made, 1,104 (6%) were to individuals who owned at least I dog or cat and agreed to participate. Information was collected for 635 dogs and 469 cats. Only 14 (1%) respondents indicated that their pet was unhealthy, but 176 (16%) indicated that their pets had 1 or more diseases. The most common diseases were musculoskeletal, dental, and gastrointestinal tract or hepatic disease. Many owners (n = 356) reported their pets were overweight or obese, but only 3 reported obesity as a health problem in their pets. Owners of 28 (2.5%) animals reported that they were feeding a therapeutic diet, with the most common being diets for animals with renal disease (n = 5), reduced-calorie diets (5), and reduced-fat diets (4). Owners of 107 of 1,076 (9.9%) animals reported administering dietary supplements to their pets. Multivitamins (n = 53 animals), chondroprotective agents (22), and fatty acids (13) were the most common dietary supplements used. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Results suggest that most dogs and cats reported by their owners to have a health problem were not being fed a therapeutic diet. In addition, the rate of dietary supplement use was lower than that reported for people.

Reasons for performing study: Obtaining magnetic resonance images of the inner hoof wall tissue at the microscopic level would enable early accurate diagnosis of laminitis and therefore more effective therapy. Objectives: To optimise magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters in order to obtain the highest possible resolution of the structures beneath the equine hoof wall. Methods: Magnetic resonance microscopy (MRM) was performed in front feet from 6 cadaver horses using T-2-weighted fast spin echo (FSE-T-2), and T-1-weighted gradient echo (GRE-T-1) sequences. Results: In T-2 weighted FSE images most of the stratum medium showed no signal, however the coronary, terminal and sole papillae were visible. The stratum lamellatum was clearly visible and primary epidermal lamellae could be differentiated from dermal lamellae. Conclusion: Most structures beneath the hoof wall were differentiated. Conventional scanners for diagnostic MRI in horses are low or high field. However this study used ultra-high field scanners currently not available for clinical use. Signal-to-noise ratio (SIN) increases as a function of field strength. An increase of spatial resolution of the image results in a decreased SIN. SIN can also be improved with better coils and the resolution of high field MRI scanners will increase as technology develops and surface array coils become more readily available. Potential relevance: Although MR images with microscopic resolution were obtained ex vivo, this study demonstrates the potential for detection of lamellar pathology as it occurs. Early recognition of the development of laminitis to instigate effective therapy at an earlier stage and may improve the outcome for laminitic horses. Clinical MR is now readily available at 3 T, while 4 T, 7 T and 9 T systems are being used for human whole body applications.

Sudden cardiac death in small animals is uncommon but often occurs due to cardiac conduction defects or myocardial diseases. Primary cardiac conduction defects are mainly caused by mutations in genes involved in impulse conduction processes (e.g., gapjunction genes and transcription factors) or repolarisation processes (e.g., ion-channel genes), whereas primary cardiomyopathies are mainly caused by defective force generation or force transmission due to gene mutations in either sarcomeric or cytoskeleton proteins. Although over 50 genes have been identified in humans directly or indirectly related to sudden cardiac death, no genetic aetiologies have been identified in small animals. Sudden cardiac deaths have been also reported in German Shepherds and Boxers. A better understanding of molecular genetic aetiologies for sudden cardiac death will be required for future study toward unveiling actiology in sudden cardiac death in small animals. Mast cell tumours (MCTs) are relatively common tumours of cats, and are the second most common cutaneous tumours in cats in the USA. While the primary splenic form of the disease is far less common, it is usually associated with more severe clinical signs. Signalment, clinical and survival characteristics of mast cell neoplasia were characterised in 41 cats. The most common tumour location was cutaneous/ subcutaneous head and trunk. Stage la was the most common tumour stage at first diagnosis (n = 20), followed by stage 4 (both stage 4a and stage 4b; n = 10). Of 22 cats that underwent excisional biopsy, mast cell neoplasia recurred in four cats during the study period. Three of the 41 cats presented with simultaneous cutaneous and either splenic or lymph node tumours. A comparison between cats with only cutaneous tumours (n = 30) and those with tumours involving the spleen or lymph nodes (n = 11) showed longer survival times for the cutaneous-only group (P = 0.031). Twelve of the 41 cats died of mast cell neoplasia during the study period. When a subgroup of cats with only cutaneous tumours (no lymph node or visceral involvement) were divided according to whether there were multiple (five or more) tumours (n = 6) or a single tumour (n = 19), cats with single tumours survived longer than those with multiple tumours (P = 0.001). Solitary cutaneous feline MCTs without spread to the lymph nodes usually manifest as benign disease with a relatively protracted course. However, multiple cutaneous tumours, recurrent tumours and primary splenic disease should receive a guarded prognosis due to the relatively short median survival times associated with these forms of the disease.
