Thin films of an organo-soluble polyimide based on 1,4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) have been studied. A prism coupler was used to measure the refractive indices. The average refractive indices of thin films prepared by annealing at different temperatures and times were chosen to characterize the condensation states of thin films. Thin films annealed at 200 degrees C show irreversible changes in physical properties, eg solubility. FTIR spectroscopy showed that the chain structures of the above thin films remained unchanged. It is proposed that specific molecular interactions induce the irreversible changes revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

Red shifts of emission wavelength of self-organized In(Cla)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) covered by 3 nm thick InxGa1-xAs layer with three different In mole fractions (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively) have been observed. Transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that the stress along growth direction in the InAs dots was reduced due to introducing the InxGa1-xAs (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) covering layer instead of GaAs layer. Atomic force microscopy pictures show a smoother surface of InAs islands covered by an In0.2Ga0.8As layer. It is explained by the calculations that the redshifts of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the QDs covered by the InxGa1-xAs (x greater than or equal to 0.1) layers were mainly due to the reducing of the strain other than the InAs/GaAs intermixing in the InAs QDs. The temperature dependent PL spectra further confirm that the InGaAs covering layer can effectively suppress the temperature sensitivity of PL emissions. 1.3 mum emission wavelength with a very narrow linewidth of 19.2 mcV at room temperature has been obtained successfully from In,In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs self-assembled QDs covered by a 3-nm In0.2Ga0.2As strain reducing layer. A series of organic D-pi-A sensitizers composed of different triarylamine donors in conjugation with the thienothiophene unit and cyanoacrylic acid as an acceptor has been synthesized at a moderate yield. Through tuning the number of methoxy substituents on the triphenylamine donor, we have gradually red-shifted the absorption of sensitizers to enhance device efficiencies.

Lewis base modification strategy on rare earth ternary catalyst was disclosed to enhance nucleophilic ability of active center during copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide (PO), poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with H-T linkages over 83%, and number-average molecular weight (M-n) up to 100 kg/mol was synthesized at room temperature using Y(CCl3OO)(3)-ZnEt2-glycerine catalyst and 1,10-phenanthroline (PHEN) cocatalyst. Coordination of PHEN with active Zinc center enhanced the nucleophilic ability of the metal carbonate, which became more regio-specific in attacking carbon in PO, leading to PPC with improved H-T linkages.

This work is focused on the factors influencing the intercalation of maleated polypropylene (PPMA) into organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). Two kinds of PPMA were used to explore the optimal candidate for effective intercalation into OMMT. The grafting degree of maleic anhydride and the viscosity of PPMA have effects on the diffusion of polymer molecules. Moreover, the loading level of surfactant was varied to optimize the modification of montmorillonite because the appropriate loading level can provide a balance between interlayer distance and steric hindrance. The kind of surfactant changes the interaction between OMMT and PPMA, and accordingly the intercalation of PPMA is different, resulting in the discrepancy of the intercalation of PPMA.

Zirconocene catalyst was heterogenized inside an organosilane-modified montmorillonite (MMT) pretreated by calcination and acidization, for supported catalyst systems with well-spaced alpha-olefin polymerization active centers. The varied pretreatment and modification conditions of montmorillonite are efficient for supported zirconocene catalysts in control of polyethylene microstructures, in particular, molecular weight distribution. In contrast to other supported catalyst systems, Cp2ZrCl2/modified montmorillonite(MMT-7)-supported catalysts with a distinct interlayer structure catalyzed ethylene homopolymerization and copolymerization with I-octene activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO), resulting in polymers with a bimodal molecular weight distribution (MWD).

The molecular weight of recombinant hirudin ( rHV-2) was determined rapidly by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of fight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The effects of the three types of matrixes were compared and discussed, alpha-cynao-4-hydroxycinnamic acid was proved to be the best matrix. It showed that MALDI-TOF-MS was superior to the traditional method of molecular weight determination of the biological macromolecules. The mass spectrum data proved that the primary structure of rHV-2 was correct and there was no amino acid deletion, mutation and modification in its expression, refolding and purification.

Monte Carlo method has been applied to investigate the kinetic of grafting reaction in free radical copolymerization. The simulation is quits in agreement with that of theoretical and experimental results. It proves that the Monte Carlo simulation is an effective method for investigating the grafting reaction of free radical copolymerization. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The thiol group of glutathione (GSH) was protected by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), the product S-substituted dinitrophenyl GSH(GSH-S-DNP) was alcoholized to obtain haptenes 4 and 5 respectively. As haptenes, the two GSH derivatives were characterized by means of H-1 NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS and IR, followed by individually coupling with bovine serum albumin (BSA) via glutaraldehyde. BSB-Hp4 and BSA-Hp5 were purified by Sephadex G-25 gel filtration chromatography. For each conjugate, the average haptene-BSA ratio was 12 : 1. The electrophoresis analysis showed that the average molecular weight of each conjugate was 76 500. The CD spectrum indicated that the conjugates had more a-helix content than BSA did.

Single chain and pauci chain single crystals of gutta percha in nanometer size were prepared by a dilute solution spraying method. A new crystal modification of gutta percha was found. The unit cell of the new modification of gutta percha was determined by electron diffraction crystal structure analysis to be a hexagonal form with cell dimensions: a = b = 0.695 nm, c = 0.661 nm, alpha = beta = 90 degrees, gamma =120 degrees; the space group is P6. The molecular packing in the unit cell was determined by computer modelling with Cerius(2) 2.0 software. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene (PP/HDPE) blends in a wide range of compositions modified by a sequential Ziegler-Natta polymerization product (PP-PE) have been investigated. PP-PE contains multiple components such as PP, ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPC), and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). The effects of PP-PE on the mechanical properties and morphology of the PP/HDPE blends are the aggregative results of all its individual components. Addition of PP-PE to the blends not only improved the tensile strength of the blends, but the elongation at break increased linearly while the moduli were nearly unchanged. Morphological studies show that the adhesion between the two phases in all the blends of different compositions is enhanced and the dispersed domain sizes of the blends are reduced monotonously with the increment of the content of PP-PE. PP-PE has been demonstrated to be a more effective compatibilizer than EPC. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the tensile strength of the blends depends most on the adhesion between the two phases and the elongation at break depends most on the domain size of the dispersed component.
