A wear mechanism map of uncoated high-speed steel (HSS) tools was constructed under the conditions of dry-drilling die-cast magnesium alloys. Three wear mechanisms appear in the map based on the microanalysis of drilled HSS tools by SEM, including adhesive wear, abrasive wear and diffusion wear. In the map, there exists a minor wear region which is called "safety zone". This wear mechanism map will be a good reference for choosing suitable drilling parameters when drilling die-cast magnesium alloys.

The effect of Nd addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a die-cast AZ91 alloy was investigated in the present work. The results show that the die-cast AZ91 alloy is composed of alpha-Mg matrix and gamma-Mg17Al12 phase. Nd addition into the AZ91 alloy leads to the formation of rare earth containing intermetallic phase. Al4Nd phase forms when Nd content is less than or equal to 1.0 wt.%. Al2Nd phase appears simultaneously when Nd content reaches to 3.0 wt.%.

The Mg-8Zn-8Al-4RE (RE = mischmetal, mass%) magnesium alloy was prepared by using casting method. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast alloy, solid solution alloy and aged alloy samples have been investigated. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometery and scanning electron microscope attached energy spectrometer were used to characterize the microstructure and phase composition for the alloy. Net shaped tau-Mg-32(Al,Zn)(49) phase was obtained at the grain boundary, and needle-like or blocky Al11RE3 phase disperses in grain boundary and alpha-Mg matrix. The tau-Mg-32(Al,Zn)(49) phase disappeared during solution treatment and a new phase of Al(2)CeZn2 formed during subsequent age treatment. The mechanical properties were performed by universal testing machine at room temperature, 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C, separately. The ultimate tensile strength of as-cast alloy is lower compared to an age treatment alloy at 200 degrees C for 12h. The strengths decreased with enhancing test temperature, but elongation has not been effect by age treatment.

Spark discharge was the representative phenomenon of Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method distinguished from other electrochemical oxidation methods. Under the spark discharge treatment, characteristics of the anodic layer were significantly changed. To investigate the influences of the spark discharge, a piece of magnesium alloy AZ91D specimen was partly treated by MAO method in alkaline silicate solution. And the microstructure, element distributions as well as the surface potential distributions of the specimen were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) technique. As a result of intensive spark discharge treatment, porous external layer with dense internal layer were formed on Mg alloy surface. At the same time, the depositions of OH- and SiO32- ions were accelerated, which resulted in the enrichment of element oxygen and silicon at the spark discharge region. Moreover, due to the compact internal layer, the intensive spark discharge region exhibited more positive potentials with respect to other regions, which meant this region could restrain the ejection of electron and provide effective protection to the substrate. In addition, it was found that oxygen played a vital role in determining the intensity and size of sparks, and abundant oxygen resulted in intensive and larger sparks. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper combines the four-point bending test, SEM and finite element method to study the interface fracture property of PEO coatings on aluminum alloy. The interface failure mode of the coating on the compression side is revealed. The ceramic coating crack firstly along the 45 degrees to the interface, then the micro crack in the coating deduces the interface crack. The plastic deformation observed by SEM shows excellent adhesion property between the coating and substrate. The plastic deformation in the substrate is due to the interfacial crack extension, so the interface crack mode of PEO coatings is ductile crack. Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and heat-treated Mg-12.3Zn-5.8Y-1.4Al (ZYA1261) alloy were investigated. The phase compositions of the as-cast alloy are alpha-Mg, Mg3YZn6 (I-phase), Mg(3)y(2)Zn(3) (W-phase), Mg12YZn (Z-phase), Mg24Y5, MgZn and a small quantity of Al-containing phase.

The Mg-8Gd-2Y-1Nd-0.3Zn-0.6Zr (wt.%) alloy sheet was prepared by hot extrusion technique, and the structure and mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were investigated. The results show that the alloy in different states is mainly composed of alpha-Mg solid solution and secondary phases of Mg5RE and Mg24RE5 (RE = Gd, Y and Nd). At aging temperatures from 200 degrees C to 300 degrees C the alloy exhibits obvious age-hardening response. Great improvement of mechanical properties is observed in the peak-aged state alloy (aged at 200 degrees C for 60 h), the ultimate tensile strength (sigma(b)), tensile yield strength (sigma(0.2)) and elongation (epsilon) are 376 MPa, 270 MPa and 14.2% at room temperature (RT), and 206 MPa. 153 MPa and 25.4% at 300 degrees C, respectively, the alloy exhibits high thermal stability.

Mg-4Al-4Nd-0.5Zn-0.3Mn alloy was prepared by metal mould casting method. Microstructure, aging behavior, mechanical properties and fracture morphology of the alloy were investigated. The results showed that alpha-Mg, Al-11 Nd-3, Al2Nd and Mg-32(Al,Zn)(49) phases were the main phases of the as-cast alloy. And the long rod-like Al-11 Nd-3 phase was decomposed to granular Al2Nd through T6 heat treatment. The tensile strength was also enhanced by T6 treatment. The yield strength was increased by 17% and 21% at RT and 150 degrees C, respectively. It was mainly because that the precipitates were refined through T6 treatment and this became more benefit to hinder dislocations slipping.

Mg-3Al-0.5Mn-0.5Zn-1MM alloy was prepared by metal mould casting method. The as-cast ingot was homogenized and then hot-rolled at 673 K with total thickness reduction of 65%. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-cast and hot-rolled samples were investigated. The results showed that the as-cast sample mainly consisted of alpha-Mg, beta-Mg17Al12, Al10Ce2Mn7, and Al11RE3 (RE = La and Ce) phases. The average grain size of the sample homogenized at 673 K was about 240 gm, and it was greatly refined to about 7 mu m by dynamic recrystallization for the hot-rolled sample.

Mg-8Gd-1Dy-0.3Zn (wt.%) alloy was prepared by high-pressure die-casting technique. The thermal stability, mechanical properties at temperature range from room temperature to 573 K and strengthening mechanism was investigated. The results showed that the die-cast state alloy was mainly composed of fine cellular equiaxed grain. The fine porosity-free skin region was related to the aggregation of rare earth elements. The long lamellar-shaped stacking compound containing Zn and polygon-shaped precipitate were observed along the grain boundaries. The die-cast sample exhibited high mechanical properties and good thermal stability until 523 K.

Die cast AZ91-xYmm (x = 0-0.8 wt.%) magnesium alloys with excellent tensile properties and corrosion resistance behavior were successfully prepared by a simple addition of yttrium-rich misch metal (Ymm) to AZ91. Influences of Ymm on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of AZ91 were investigated. The results showed that addition of Ymm to die cast AZ91 alloy could re. ne the microstructure including primary alpha-Mg and eutectic beta-Mg17Al12. When the content of Ymm reached 0.8 wt.% a small quantity of Al2Y phase would form. The tensile properties were improved greatly with addition of Ymm to AZ91. The creep rate of the AZ91-Ymm alloys, tested at 150 degrees C/50MPa, was one order of magnitude lower than that of AZ91. When addition of Ymm was more than 0.3 wt.%, the salt-spray corrosion resistance of AZ91-Ymm alloys could be 30-40 times of that of AZ91. The improvement of corrosion resistance with addition of Ymm was confirmed by the results of electrochemical polarization experiments. Mechanism of the improvement of mechanical properties and corrosion behavior caused by Ymm was also discussed.

With increasing applied voltage, three types of anodic coatings, passive film, micro-spark ceramic coating and spark ceramic coating were made by micro-arc oxidization (MAO) technique on AZ91D magnesium alloy in alkali-silicate solution. The structure, composition characteristics and the electrochemical properties of coatings were also studied with SEM, XRD and EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) technique, respectively. It is found that the electrochemical properties are closely related to the structure and composition characteristics of the anodic coatings. At the same time, the characteristics of the three types of anodic coatings differ significantly, among them, the micro-spark ceramic coating, prepared in the voltage range of 170similar to220V exhibits compact, homogeneous structure and highest corrosion-resistance.

Ceramic coatings are produced on aluminum alloy by autocontrol AC pulse Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) with stabilized average current. Transient signal gathering system is used to study the current, voltage, and the transient wave during the PEO process. SEM, OM, XRD and EDS are used to study the coatings evolution of morphologies, composition and structure. TEM is used to study the micro profile of the outer looser layer and inner compact layer. Polarization test is used to study the corrosion property of PEO coatings in NaCl solution. According to the test results, AC pulse PEO process can be divided into four stages with different aspects of discharge phenomena, voltage and current. The growth mechanism of AC PEO coating is characterized as anodic reaction and discharge sintering effect. PEO coating can increase the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy by one order or two; however, too long process time is not necessarily needed to increase the corrosion resistance. In condition of this paper, PEO coating at 60 min is the most protective coating for aluminum alloy substrate. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All fights reserved.

耐热、高强和抗高温蠕变的稀土镁合金是镁合金研究与开发的重要研究课题之一。本论文主要集中于对Y和其它稀土元素复合加入镁后的镁合金结构和性能的研究。探讨了Y与其它重稀土元素如Gd、Ho复合加入镁后的镁合金的时效硬化行为和结构性能,也研究了Y与混合轻稀土金属如富铈、富镧复合加入镁后对镁合金性能的影响。还对新型Mg-Y压铸镁合金的开发为目标,探讨了这一新型合金开发的可行性。具体结果如下: 1. 研究了Y加入到Mg-10Gd-0.4Zr合金中对合金的时效硬化和性能的影响规律和Mg-10Gd-6Y-0.4Zr合金在225℃和250℃时效210h内的沉淀析出相的转变以及合金的时效硬化行为。随着Y含量的增加,合金的时效硬化反应显著增强,合金的高温拉伸强度随Y含量的增加而线性增强,其原因是合金中的β'相有好的热稳定性。 2. 研究了Y和Ho元素复合加入镁后镁合金的时效硬化反应和组织性能。研究发现,在250℃时效时,当Y和Ho元素复合加入镁后,合金固溶体的时效分解速度加快,促进了合金的时效硬化,并且,随着Y含量的增加,合金的时效硬化反应增强,力学性能也相应提高。β-Mg24Y(Ho)5和(或)β'相对合金的时效硬化起了主要的作用,而且,位错密度增加也是合金性能提高的重要原因。 3. 探讨了Y和混合轻稀土富铈(和富镧)复合加入镁后对镁合金的性能影响。富铈和富镧在镁中低的固溶度导致单独加入镁后的时效硬化反应很弱,当Y和混合轻稀土富铈(和富镧)复合加入后,合金的时效硬化反应明显增强,并随着Y含量的增加,时效硬化的反应也相应增强。富铈和富镧对Mg-Y合金固溶体的时效分解有明显的促进作用。除了基体中的沉淀强化外,仍然停留在晶界上的Mg12RE稀土相对合金的晶界也有明显的强化作用。 4. 研究开发了具有良好的力学性能和高温抗蠕变性能、低含量Y、Gd的稀土镁合金,实验结果表明该合金是一种有良好应用前景的压铸镁合金。
