Along the west coast of the United States, the potential impact of increasing pinniped populations on declining salmonid (Oncorhynchus spp.) stocks has become an issue of concern. Fisheries managers need species-specific estimates of consumption by pinnipeds to evaluate their impact on salmonid stocks. To estimate consumption, we developed a model that estimates diet composition by reconstructing prey biomass from fecal samples. We applied the model to data collected from harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) that are present year-round in the lower Columbia River where endangered stocks of salmonids pass as returning adults and as seaward-migrating smolts. Using the same data, we applied the split-sample frequency of occurrence model, which avoids reconstructing biomass by assuming that each fecal sample represents an equal volume of consumption and that within each sample each prey item represents an equal proportion of the volume. The two models for estimating diet composition yielded size-specific differences in consumption estimates that were as large as tenfold for the smallest and largest prey. Conclusions about the impact of harbor seal predation on adult salmonids, some of their largest prey species, remain uncertain without some appropriate rationale or further information (e.g. empirical captive studies) to discriminate between these models.

The phytoplankton species composition and abundance in Ogun River, Ogun state, Southwest Nigeria was studied for a period of seven months (December, 2011 - June, 2012), a total of forty-one genera belonging to five taxonomic groups were recorded from Ogun River. The phytoplankton species composition was surpassed by Chrysophyta with 15 species consisting of 36.6% followed by Chlorophyta with 14 consisting of 34.1%. This was followed by Cyanophyta (7 species) consisting of 17.1%, Euglenophyta with 3 species consisting of 7.3% and Pyrrophyta with 2 species consisting 4.92%. Cyanophyta was the highest in abundance consisting of 41% while the lowest in abundance was Pyrrophyta consisting of 1.5%. The low nature of phytoplankton abundance and diversity observed in this study must have been caused by the polluted nature of the water due to the anthropogenic activities carried out around its shores The dominance of Cyanophyta in this river is similar to findings from Lake Victoria, Lake Bishoftu, Lake Chaohu and the temple pond of Thirupour.

Investigation on the species composition and abundance of zooplankton in Ogun River, Abeokuta, Ogun state, Southwestern Nigeria was carried out for a period of seven months (December, 2011-June, 2012), Using hand trawling method, 55 µm mesh size plankton net was trawled horizontally ten times to capture zooplankton. The zooplankton samples were put into properly labeled plastic containers and preserved in 4% formalin solution. A total of sixteen genera from five taxonomic groups were recorded from Ogun River. Cladocera predominated both in terms of species composition and abundance. Five species of Cladocera was recorded consisting of 31.25%. Protozoa and Rotifera recorded four species each consisting of 25%. Copepoda recorded two species consisting of 12.5%, and Ostracoda with one species consisting of 6.25%. The low nature of zooplankton abundance and species composition observed in this study must have been caused by the polluted nature of the water due to the anthropogenic activities carried out around its shores The dominance of Cladocera in this river is similar to findings from River Echara and River Imo, Southeastern Nigeria.

The faunal composition, distribution and abundance of zooplankton from 28 stations in and around the Gulf of Kutch, were studied during INS Darshak cruise in January, 1975. Zooplankton biomass was about 4.5 times more in the outside Gulf region (mean: 50.3 ml/100 m super(3)) than in the inside Gulf (mean: 11.1 ml/100 m super(3)). The mean zooplankton biomass of Dwarka (66.3 ml/100 m super(3)) was about 2.5 times more than that off Okha (26.8 ml/100 m super(3)). A rich zooplankton production in the Saurashtra waters corresponded to a rich fishery prevailing in this region.

The composition and abundance of meio and macrobenthos in 5 stations of Kali estuary were studied during September 1981 to September 1982. In all sixteen meiobenthic and fourteen macrobenthic taxa were identified and the salient features in their temporal and spatial distribution, species dominance and percentage occurrence are discussed.

Shell composition of 35 species of molluscs was studied. The shell, calcium and calcium carbonate contents were lowest in the cuttle bone of cuttlefish, while they were highest in shell of Cypraea ocellata. Solen sp. had higher meat and protein content than the pelecypods and lower meat, water and protein content than the cephalopods. Inverse relationships between water and fat, and protein and ash were established.

Hydrographic parameters in relation to fish catch composition within the depth range of 30 m to 97 m at 15 different stations off the Bombay to Ratnagiri coast were studied from onboard the vessel M.V. Saraswathi, a 36.5 meter deepsea going research-cum-training vessel during her 58th cruise from the 17th to the 27th December 1986. The study indicates the abundance of Trichiurus sp, Priacanthus sp and Arius sp. Fluctuations in the zooplankton biomass and faunistic composition in the area are examined in relation to some important hydrographic parameters.

Hypnea musciformis (Wulf.) Lamour., H. pannosa J. Ag. and H. valentiae (Turn.) Mont., collected from the northern Arabian Sea coast of Pakistan, have been investigated for their fatty acid compositions through GC-MS. Palmitic acid was present in largest quantity (55-57%) and oleic was the major (7.6-8.4%) unsaturated fatty acid. Pentacosanoic and hexacosenoic acids are being reported for the first time from any species of Hypnea. The three species differed remarkably due to their habitat ecology.

During the course of chemical investigation of marine algae collected from Karachi coast of Arabian Sea, five sterols named as sarangosterol(1), 23-methyl cholesta-5, 25-dien-3ß-ol(2) from Endarachne binghamiae (brown alga), sargasterol(3) from Dictyota indica (brown alga), cholesterol(4) from Laurencia obtusa (red alga) and clerosterol(5) from Codium iyengarii (green alga) have been isolated. Their structures were elucidated with the help of spectroscopic means.

Fresh Bombay ducks and Bombay ducks dried (a) without any pre-treatment or (b) after brining with NaCl solutions of 15% and 7.5% concentrations for 18 hours were analyzed for moisture, ash, minerals, vitamins, fat, free fatty acids, peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid value, total protein, total amino nitrogen, soluble proteins and trimethylamine contents. All the dried samples were stored in (a) tightly closed tin containers or (b) polythene bags and analyzed for the above mentioned constituents every 1½ months. It was observed that brining did not exercise any marked influence on keeping properties. Organoleptic observations showed that fish stored in tin containers kept better and longer than those stored in polythene bags.

Biochemical composition of the spent ovaries of 23 different species of freshwater fishes showed a much lower value for protein and fat with higher moisture content than those of the ripe eggs, suggesting an inverse relationship between fat and moisture. Ovaries during the recovering phase showed fairly high values of phosphorus, but lower than those for the ripe eggs. Higher values of calcium and iron in spent ovaries than those in ripe eggs probably suggest that there is a greater requirement of calcium and iron during the spent phase of the gonads.
