A note on hydrography off Bombay during the end of May, 1983

A brief account is given of hydrographic observations made during a cruise conducted off Bombay, India, on the 26 May 1983. Vertical distribution charts are included for temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen.

A comparative note on the modus operandii of reservoir development in Republic of China and India

Principles adopted by China for the development of reservoir fisheries are discussed. Production of some of reservoirs of China with that of India is compared. The reasons for obtaining higher production in China have been recognised as: emphasis on utilization of all resources for food production; direct feeding; use of selected varieties of fast growing carps; keeping 15 pigs per hectare of water area for application of pig void and application of manure; production of fingerlings at the reservoir sites enclaving coves and bays; grading and removing obstructions from bottom; rational harvesting and stocking and improvement of reservoir shore areas as a whole. Some of these measures which could be implemented in Indian conditions are briefly described.

A note on the use of ground water for successful breeding of common carps in extremely cold climate

Common carps are known for prolific breeding habits but they generally do not breed in water with temperature value less than 20 degree C. During winter months of 1985 when the temperature ranged from 15.5-20.5 degree C, the common carps were successfully bred by using ground water having temperature of 25-26 degree C and the results are discussed.

Preliminary note on the biochemical composition of meat of dai (Chirocentrus spp) and kati (Opisthopterus spp)

Studies were taken up biochemical composition of Chirocentrus dorab and Opisthopterus sp. The seasonal changes, yield of mince and energy value of the meat were also reported.

A note on mass mortality of fish in Shivpur Talab (Madhya Pradesh)

Shivpur Talab is a perennial tank in Hoshangabad district (Madhya Pradesh) having a maximum water spread of 4 ha. It is rainfed and also draws water from a close by Tawa canal. On 21st May 1985 heavy mortality of fish was noticed in the tank. The talab was stocked with fingerlings Catla catla, Cyprinus carpio and Labeo rohita approximately one year before the date of mortality. Scientific investigation revealed that mass mortality of fish occurred due to reduction in water area of the tank which in turn brought out oxygen depletion. The paper deals with the factors which brought about mass mortality of fish in Shivpur Talab.

Note on the occurrence of minnows in the gut of Schizothorax longipinnis Heckel from River Jhelum, Kashmir

The carnivorous feeding behavior of some adults of Schizothorax longipinnis Heckel was observed during 1979-81 and the details are presented in this communication.

A note on the calorific values of a freshwater teleost, Labeo gonius (Hamilton)

Forty specimens of Labeo gonius (Ham) were analysed for protein, carbohydrate and fat values. The calorific value was calculated by multiplying the value of protein and carbohydrate with the energy factor 4.1 and for fat by 9.3. The average calorific values of fish for protein, carbohydrate and fat were 72.16, 9.55 and 11.90 cal/100 g respectively suggesting that the fishes are highly nutritious.

Mortality rates of the Poovalan prawn (Metapenaeus dobsoni) along the southwest coast of India with a note on the dynamics of its population

The annual instantaneous total mortality coefficient (Z) for the prawn Metapenaeus dobsoni has been estimated to range from 0.8 to 5.14 by the cumulative catch curve method. Different methods used in the study resulted in wide ranging values of natural mortality (M) (0.6 to 2.303), but the yield per recruit model when superimposed with the absolute yield values revealed the right order to be > 2. The biologically optimum yield of about 18 thousand tons is obtained for an effort of 2,702 trawlers per day for 215 fishing days when the annual exploitation ratio (E) is about 52%.

Note on the occurrence of a terrestrial isopod, Hemilepistus klugii (Brandt) in Baluchistan, Pakistan

During a computer-aided search of the Crustacea collection in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the Smithsonian Institution (USNM), a record was found for the existence of Hemilepistus klugii (Brandt, 1833) in Pakistan.

Note on additional material of Neballa dahli Kazmi and Tirmizi, 1989 (Leptostraca: Crustacea) from Karachi (northern Arabian Sea)

The first leptostracans Nebalia dahli (Kazmi & Tirmizi, 1989) from the Arabian Sea in mangrove planktonic collection near Karachi were two males, the sex of the juvenile paratype could not be determined at that time. A brief description is given in this paper.

Note on the geomorphology of a segment of Mekran coast

The Lasbela coast formulates the southeastern part of Balochistan province. The plain area in the north of the coast is a triangular shaped valley bounded by mountains on both of its flanks called as the Lasbela plain.

A note on proximate composition of tuna fish paste from Minicoy

An indigenous method of preparing fish paste from Tuna, exclusively practiced in Minicoy islands is described. Detailed proximate analysis data of the product is presented and it has been compared with the values obtained for similar products of foreign countries. A chromatographic study is also carried out for essential amino acids and also with special reference to detecting any possibilities of histamine poisoning, especially in view of the reported high values of histidine in tuna meat. However, free histamine is not detected in the sample.

A note on the production trend of marine shrimps in India

The paper reviews the production statistics of marine shrimps in the different maritime states of India from 1950 to 1962. It is pointed out that for a correct appraisal of the status of any fishery, it is necessary to have data on effort E and catch per unit effort in addition to the conventional data on catch C. A relationship between U and E has been developed and the status of the fishery of Metapenaeus dobsoni has been discussed in this connection with reference to the data on catch and effort obtained from trawler operations off Cochin.

Note on the size groups of prawns landed by shrimp trawls of four different cod end meshes

A study on the different size groups of prawns caught by four shrimp trawls having different cod-end meshes was made by the author. The results indicate that small sized prawns of mean length 77.15 mm were captured by the net having 23.38 mm cod-end at 5-6 fathoms depth, medium prawns of mean length 105.22 mm was caught in 25.21 mm and 19.88 mm cod-end at 8 fathoms depth and big sized prawns of mean length 117.98 mm were caught in 21.29 mm cod-end. Further the relation of length on breadth of prawn is worked out to be : Bp=0.15 Lp - 1.50 where Bp and Lp are breadth and length respectively.
