Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) are mostly implemented to circumvent budgetary constraints, and to encourage efficiency and quality in the provision of public infrastructure in order to reach social welfare. One of the ways of reaching the latter objective is by the introduction of performance based standards tied to bonuses and penalties to reward or punish the performance of the contractor. This paper focuses on the implementation of safety based incentives in PPPs in such a way that the better the safety outcome the greater larger will be the economic reward to the contractor. The main aim of this paper is to identify whether the incentives to improve road safety in PPPs are ultimately effective in improving safety ratios in Spain. To that end, Poisson and negative binomial regression models have been applied using information of motorways of the Spanish network of 2006. The findings indicate that even though road safety is highly influenced by variables that are not much controllable by the contractor such as the Average Annual Daily Traffic and the percentage of heavy vehicles, the implementation of safety incentives in PPPs has a positive influence in the reduction of fatalities, injuries and accidents.

A sustainable manufacturing process must rely on an also sustainable raw materials and energy supply. This paper is intended to show the results of the studies developed on sustainable business models for the minerals industry as a fundamental previous part of a sustainable manufacturing process. As it has happened in other economic activities, the mining and minerals industry has come under tremendous pressure to improve its social, developmental, and environmental performance. Mining, refining, and the use and disposal of minerals have in some instances led to significant local environmental and social damage. Nowadays, like in other parts of the corporate world, companies are more routinely expected to perform to ever higher standards of behavior, going well beyond achieving the best rate of return for shareholders. They are also increasingly being asked to be more transparent and subject to third-party audit or review, especially in environmental aspects. In terms of environment, there are three inter-related areas where innovation and new business models can make the biggest difference: carbon, water and biodiversity. The focus in these three areas is for two reasons. First, the industrial and energetic minerals industry has significant footprints in each of these areas. Second, these three areas are where the potential environmental impacts go beyond local stakeholders and communities, and can even have global impacts, like in the case of carbon. So prioritizing efforts in these areas will ultimately be a strategic differentiator as the industry businesses continues to grow. Over the next forty years, world?s population is predicted to rise from 6.300 million to 9.500 million people. This will mean a huge demand of natural resources. Indeed, consumption rates are such that current demand for raw materials will probably soon exceed the planet?s capacity. As awareness of the actual situation grows, the public is demanding goods and services that are even more environmentally sustainable. This means that massive efforts are required to reduce the amount of materials we use, including freshwater, minerals and oil, biodiversity, and marine resources. It?s clear that business as usual is no longer possible. Today, companies face not only the economic fallout of the financial crisis; they face the substantial challenge of transitioning to a low-carbon economy that is constrained by dwindling natural resources easily accessible. Innovative business models offer pioneering companies an early start toward the future. They can signal to consumers how to make sustainable choices and provide reward for both the consumer and the shareholder. Climate change and carbon remain major risk discontinuities that we need to better understand and deal with. In the absence of a global carbon solution, the principal objective of any individual country should be to reduce its global carbon emissions by encouraging conservation. The mineral industry internal response is to continue to focus on reducing the energy intensity of our existing operations through energy efficiency and the progressive introduction of new technology. Planning of the new projects must ensure that their energy footprint is minimal from the start. These actions will increase the long term resilience of the business to uncertain energy and carbon markets. This focus, combined with a strong demand for skills in this strategic area for the future requires an appropriate change in initial and continuing training of engineers and technicians and their awareness of the issue of eco-design. It will also need the development of measurement tools for consistent comparisons between companies and the assessments integration of the carbon footprint of mining equipments and services in a comprehensive impact study on the sustainable development of the Economy.

Esta Tesis trata sobre el diseño y desarrollo de un material constructivo de fachada (tras ventilada), empleando plástico reciclado (granza de caucho, de neumáticos fuera de uso) para su elaboración. El uso de materiales reciclados para la elaboración de nuevos materiales constructivos, es a día de hoy, un valor agregado que contribuye tanto a la disminución de desechos tóxicos, como a la fabricación de productos de alta calidad. La investigación partió de la necesidad de comprender qué es un plástico, cómo son producidos, cuáles son los factores que permitían su reciclaje y qué propiedades podrían ser aprovechadas para desarrollar un nuevo material constructivo. En el estado del arte, fueron analizados los aspectos del plástico relacionados a su composición, propiedades, tipologías, producción, consumo, legislación europea y española, reciclaje y valorización energética. Para analizar más profundamente los materiales desarrollados a partir de plásticos reciclados, desde textiles hasta elementos constructivos. Con el conocimiento adquirido mediante este análisis previo, se diseñó una metodología de experimentación, utilizando caucho reciclado y derivados del yeso como agregados, en una matriz de resinas poliméricas reforzada con fibras naturales y sintéticas. Los resultados obtenidos en los ensayos físicos y térmicos, con los elementos producidos, demostraron que el material tiene una excelente resistencia a tensión así como una baja conductividad térmica. Esta investigación, servirá como precedente para el desarrollo de nuevos materiales y sistemas constructivos, utilizando agregados de plástico reciclado, en los procesos de fabricación. Ya que ha comprobado el enorme potencial que ofrecen, creando nuevos materiales, y contribuyendo a reducir la contaminación medio ambiental. ABSTRACT This thesis deals with the design and development of a new facade construction material using recycled plastic (rubber pellets from used tires) for processing. The use of recycled materials for the development of new building materials, today is an added value which contributes both to the reduction of toxic waste, as well as the processing of products of good quality. The research derives from the need to understand what a plastic is, how they are produced, what the factors that allowed recycling are and what properties can be exploited to develop a new building material. In the prior art, were analyzed plastic aspects related to its composition, properties, typologies, production, consumption, European and Spanish legislation, recycling and energy recovery. To further analyze the materials developed from recycled plastics, from textiles to construction elements. With the knowledge gained from this previous analysis, we designed an experimental approach using recycled rubber and plaster derivatives as aggregates in a polymeric resin matrix reinforced with natural and synthetic fibers. The results obtained in physical and thermal testing, with the elements produced, showed that the material has excellent tensile strength and a low thermal conductivity. This research will serve as a precedent for the development of new materials and building systems, using recycled plastic aggregates in the manufacturing processes. Since it was found the enormous potential, creating new materials, and helping reduce environmental pollution. El mercado de los semiconductores está saturado de productos similares y de distribuidores con una propuesta de servicios similar. Los procesos de Co-Creación en los que el cliente colabora en la definición y desarrollo del producto y proporciona información sobre su utilidad, prestaciones y valor percibido, con el resultado de un producto que soluciona sus necesidades reales, se están convirtiendo en un paso adelante en la diferenciación y expansión de la cadena de valor. El proceso de diseño y fabricación de semiconductores es bastante complejo, requiere inversiones cada vez mayores y demanda soluciones completas. Se requiere un ecosistema que soporte el desarrollo de los equipos electrónicos basados en dichos semiconductores. La facilidad para el diálogo y compartir información que proporciona internet, las herramientas basadas en web 2.0 y los servicios y aplicaciones en la nube; favorecen la generación de ideas, el desarrollo y evaluación de productos y posibilita la interacción entre diversos co-creadores. Para iniciar un proceso de co-creación se requiere métodos y herramientas adecuados para interactuar con los participantes e intercambiar experiencias, procesos para integrar la co-creación dentro de la operativa de la empresa, y desarrollar una organización y cultura que soporten y fomenten dicho proceso. Entre los métodos más efectivos están la Netnografía que estudia las conversaciones de las comunidades en internet; colaboración con usuarios pioneros que van por delante del Mercado y esperan un gran beneficio de la satisfacción de sus necesidades o deseos; los estudios de innovación que permiten al usuario definir y a menudo crear su propia solución y la externalización a la multitud, que mediante una convocatoria abierta plantea a la comunidad retos a resolver a cambio de algún tipo de recompensa. La especialización de empresas subcontratistas en el desarrollo y fabricación de semiconductores; facilita la innovación abierta colaborando con diversas entidades en las diversas fases del desarrollo del semiconductor y su ecosistema. La co-creación se emplea actualmente en el sector de los semiconductores para detectar ideas de diseños y aplicaciones, a menudo mediante concursos de innovación. El servicio de soporte técnico y la evaluación de los semiconductores con frecuencia es fruto de la colaboración entre los miembros de la comunidad fomentada y soportada por los fabricantes del producto. Con el programa EBVchips se posibilita el acceso a empresas pequeñas y medianas a la co-creación de semiconductores con los fabricantes en un proceso coordinado y patrocinado por el distribuidor EBV. Los semiconductores configurables como las FPGAs constituyen otro ejemplo de co-creación mediante el cual el fabricante proporciona el circuito integrado y el entorno de desarrollo y los clientes crean el producto final definiendo sus características y funcionalidades. Este proceso se enriquece con bloques funcionales de diseño, IP-cores, que a menudo son creados por la comunidad de usuarios. ABSTRACT. The semiconductor market is saturated of similar products and distributors with a similar proposal for services. The processes of co-creation in which the customer collaborates in the definition and development of the product and provides information about its utility, performance and perceived value, resulting in a product that solves their real needs, are becoming a step forward in the differentiation and expansion of the value chain. The design and semiconductor manufacturing process is quite complex, requires increasingly higher investments and demands complete solutions. It requires an ecosystem that supports the development of electronic equipments based on such semiconductors. The ease of dialogue and sharing information that provides internet, web 2.0-based tools and services and applications in the cloud; favor the generation of ideas, the development and evaluation of products and allows the interaction between various co-creators. To start a process of co-creation adequate methods and tools are required to interact with the participants and exchange experiences, processes to integrate the co-creation within the operations of the company, and developing an organization and culture that support and promote such process. Among the most effective methods are the Netnography that studies the conversations of the communities on the internet; collaboration with Lead Users who are ahead of the market and expect a great benefit from the satisfaction of their needs or desires; Innovation studies that allow the user to define and often create their own solution and Crowdsourcing, an open call to the community to solve challenges in exchange for some kind of reward. The specialization of subcontractors in the development and manufacture of semiconductors; facilitates open innovation in the context of collaboration with different entities working in the different phases of the development of the semiconductor and its ecosystem. Co-creation is used currently in the semiconductor sector to detect ideas of designs and applications, often through innovation’s contests. Technical support and evaluation of semiconductors frequently is the result of collaboration between members of the community fostered and supported by the manufacturers of the product. The EBVchips program provides access to small and medium-sized companies to the co-creation of semiconductors with manufacturers in a process coordinated and sponsored by the Distributor EBV. Configurable semiconductors like FPGAs are another example of co-creation whereby the manufacturer provides the integrated circuit and the development environment and customers create the final product by defining their features and functionality. This process is enriched with IP-cores, designs blocks that are often created by the user community.

El trabajo realizado en este Trabajo de Fin de Grado (en adelante, TFG) consiste en la inclusión de nuevas funcionalidades avanzadas a la última versión del Sistema de Gestión de Rankings de carreras de orientación. El proyecto, actualmente en fase de explotación, es un sistema de clasificación y manejo de diferentes tipos de rankings para las carreas de orientación a pie de la FEDO1. Por medio de este ranking, se determina la clasificación global de los distintos corredores federados dentro de cada categoría, a través de diferentes parámetros de entrada que establecen la funcionalidad del ranking. En cuanto al trabajo realizado en este TFG, se trata de la implementación de la siguiente versión del sistema (versión 6). En esta nueva versión se ha querido incluir nuevas funcionalidades requeridas por los miembros de la federación, así como mejora de otras que no funcionan correctamente. El primer punto del trabajo fue el de comprender y familiarizarme con la herramienta ya implementada hasta el momento, así como aprender un nuevo lenguaje de programación desconocido hasta la fecha para mí; Python. Una de las primeras modificaciones realizadas, sobre las versiones anteriores, es la modificación del Sistema de Gestión de Rankings para los organizadores de carreras. Los organizadores de las carreras obtienen una recompensa de puntos por la organización de carreras, lo que significa un punto de gran importancia para el sistema. Esta funcionalidad no funcionaba correctamente en las versiones anteriores, de manera se tuvo que rehacer desde cero con las especificaciones necesarias. Otro requisito necesario fue modificar los requisitos para el cálculo de las nuevas medias de corredores, permitiendo el cálculo de la misma de forma continua o solo cuando se cumplan todos los requisitos. Respecto a la versión anterior, existía un problema con los accesos a los directorios de cada ranking. En caso de introducir los valores iniciales del ranking desde una carpeta diferente al directorio raíz de la aplicación, el sistema no realizaba correctamente la búsqueda de archivos en el directorio de ranking. De esta manera, había que modificar todo el código implementado para que todas las búsquedas se realizaran sobre el directorio de cada ranking. A continuación, se incluyó una nueva funcionalidad para el ranking individual de los corredores. Esta nueva funcionalidad permite la inclusión de una nueva opción de cálculo de puntuaciones para el ranking individual, a través de un fichero de entrada de puntuaciones que determinase las puntuaciones de los corredores exactas. Durante toda la fase del proyecto se ha tenido que añadir otra serie de especificaciones en la aplicación, las cuales serán explicadas en esta memoria. En definitiva, el trabajo realizado se ha basado en la mejora de una aplicación que gestiona rankings deportivos, de manera que esta versión se acercase lo máximo posible a la versión final de la aplicación.---ABSTRACT---The work done during these months is based on the addition of new advanced functionalities to the last version of the "Sistema de Gestión de Rankings" of orientation races. The project, now in phase of operation, is based on a classification system and management of different types of rankings for walk orienteering of the FEDO. Through this ranking, the global classification of the federal runners in each category is determinated, through various input parameters which establish the functionality of the ranking. Talking about the work done, it consist in the implementation of a new system version (version 6). This new version include new required functionalities by the members of the federation, as well as improving others that were working wrong. The first point of the project was to understand and become familiar with the tool already implemented in that moment, as well as learn a new programming language unknown to date for me; Python. One of the first changes made on previous versions, was the modification of the system for races organizers. The races organizers obtained a reward of points for the organized race, which means a point of great important for the system. This functionality didn't work correctly in previous versions, so was essential to redo it from zero with the required specifications. Another requirement was the addition of a new option for calculating the average of organizers, allowing calculation of it at all times. In the previous version, there was a problem with the access to directories of each ranking. In case of introduce the initial values of the ranking from a different folder to the root directory of the application, the system didn't perform correctly the finding of files in the directory of the ranking. So check all the implemented code for all searches were carried out on each ranking directory.Then a new functionality was included for the individual ranking of runners. This new feature is the inclusion of a new option to calculate scores for the individual ranking, through an input file that determinates exact scores for the runners. Throughout the project phase the addition of another set of specifications in the application was important, which will be explained in this memory. In short, the work done has been based on improving of an application that manage sport rankings, so this version could approach as much as possible to the final version of the application.
