Normalização de dispositivos móveis no processo de aprendizagem de inglês : um estudo à luz da complexidade

We live in a world inherently influenced by technology and in which education is immersed in realities made possible by the support of digital technologies, such as electronic mobile devices. Thus, the general aim of this study lies in mapping and analysing the influence of mobile devices on teaching, especially with reference to learning the English language. The specific aims are to investigate how the use of mobile devices is present in the research participants’ practices, consider whether such use is beneficial, according to the students, to the English language learning as well as mapping how the use of mobile devices favours the normalisation stage, taken in this research as a complex process.The theoretical background of this study includes the premises of the Paradigm of Complexity, especially concerning the acquisition of a second language, as well as the precepts of Normalisation, which is related to the total integration of digital technologies into the English teaching and learning process in such a way that they become invisible, and the theories of language learning mediated by computers and mobile devices. Methodologically, this is an ethnographic qualitative research and its context is a language institute located in the Triângulo Mineiro region. In addition to students from five groups in the institution, two teachers and an administrative assistant participated in the survey. Data was collected through an online questionnaire, learning reports produced by students and interviews with teachers and administrative staff. The analyses indicate that mobile devices are present in the daily practices of English learners, but these uses, in most cases, are carried out through the teacher's encouragement. Moreover, despite having positive sayings on the role of digital technologies in the process of English teaching and learning, there is, among students and teachers, a dichotomy between saying and doing about the learning contexts considered valid. Additionally, the use of mobile devices in the English learning process is not yet established as a normalised issue because the process of integration of technology in teaching is still ruled by traditional uses of the technology. I conclude that the use of mobile devices in the English learning process is still not normalised, because even if students use their mobile devices every day, they generally do not realize the affordances of such use as possibilities to learn English.

Vivemos em um mundo intrinsecamente influenciado pela tecnologia e no qual a área da educação encontra-se imersa em realidades que se fazem possíveis pelo auxílio das tecnologias digitais, tais como os dispositivos eletrônicos móveis. Nesse contexto, o objetivo geral desta pesquisa reside em mapear e analisar a influência destes dispositivos móveis para o ensino, principalmente no que se refere ao ensino e aprendizagem de inglês. Os objetivos específicos são investigar de que forma o uso de dispositivos móveis está presente nas práticas dos participantes da pesquisa, analisar se tal uso confere, segundo os alunos, contribuições à aprendizagem de inglês e mapear como a utilização de dispositivos móveis propicia o estado de normalização, tomado nesta pesquisa como um processo complexo. Os pressupostos teóricos da pesquisa englobam as premissas do Paradigma da Complexidade, principalmente sobre aquisição de segunda língua, e os preceitos da Normalização, que se relaciona à total integração das tecnologias digitais no ensino e aprendizagem de línguas de forma a tornar tais tecnologias invisíveis, e teorias da aprendizagem de línguas mediada por computadores e dispositivos móveis. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa se classifica como qualitativa, de cunho etnográfico e tem como contexto um instituto de idiomas localizado na região do Triângulo Mineiro. Além dos alunos de cinco turmas da instituição, também participaram da pesquisa dois professores e uma assistente administrativo. A coleta de dados ocorreu através de um questionário online, relatos de aprendizagem produzidos pelos alunos e entrevistas realizadas com professores e pessoal administrativo. As análises sinalizam que os dispositivos móveis estão presentes nas práticas dos alunos de inglês, mas essas utilizações, em sua maioria, são realizadas através do incentivo do professor. Além disso, apesar de apresentarem dizeres positivos sobre o papel das tecnologias digitais no processo de ensino e aprendizagem de inglês, há, entre alunos e professores, uma dicotomia entre o dizer e o fazer sobre os contextos de aprendizagem considerados válidos. Adicionalmente, a utilização dos dispositivos móveis no processo de aprendizagem de inglês ainda não se constitui como uma questão normalizada, pois, o processo de integração tecnológica ao ensino ainda é pautado em utilizações tradicionais da tecnologia. Concluo que a utilização dos dispositivos móveis no processo de aprendizagem de inglês ainda não foi normalizada, pois, mesmo que os alunos utilizem seus dispositivos móveis cotidianamente, eles geralmente não percebem os propiciamentos de tal uso como possibilidades para aprender inglês.
