A handwritten invitation from John Avery to Cotton Tufts for a meeting of the Harvard Board of Overseers' "Committee to enquire into the state of the College" on April 13, 1790.

This item was donated to Houghton Library on July 27, 1994 by Boston antiquarian bookseller George Goodspeed (1903-1997; Harvard AB 1925) and transferred to the Harvard University Archives in 1999 as part of George Goodspeed's collection of Harvardiana.

The item was originally cataloged as part of HUA 734.

Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth John Avery (1739-1806, Harvard AB 1759) and State Senator Cotton Tufts (1732-1815, Harvard AB 1749) were both, as members of the Massachusetts government, ex-officio members of the Harvard Board of Overseers.
