This sewn volume contains Noyes’ mathematical exercises in geometry; trigonometry; surveying; measurement of heights and distances; plain, oblique, parallel, middle latitude, and mercator sailing; and dialing. Many of the exercises are illustrated by carefully hand-drawn diagrams, including a mariners’ compass and moon dials. The Harvard University Archives holds similar late 18th century mathematical notebooks by students Ephraim Eliot (HUC 8779.353), William Emerson Faulkner (HUC 8795.353.26), Ebenezer Hill (HUC 8782.353), Samuel Griffin (HUC 8784.353), and William Tudor (HUC 8795.353.88). Thomas Noyes (1769-1837; Harvard AB 1795), minister in Needham, Mass., son of Thomas Noyes, was born in Acton, Massachusetts, on February 5, 1769. He graduated from Harvard College in 1795, and received his Harvard A.M. in 1798. Ordained on July 10, 1799, Noyes served as minister of the Second Church in Needham, Mass., until 1833. He received an honorary AM from Brown University in 1827. Noyes died in 1837. |
