The incidence of bacteremia was 39%, the diagnosis of sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock was overall from 50%, the most frequently isolated microorganisms were gram negative bacteria (44, 5%), followed by Candida species (37.5%) and gram negative (18%). 91% of patients received antibiotic therapy empirically, and this management strategy was adjusted with culture results in 57% of cases, most of these received combination therapy (63%). The empirical use of carbapenems was 36%, while that of cephalosporins third and fourth generation was 14.8%. Different resistance patterns usual were found in 31% of the isolates, mainly AmpC (17.6%) and ESBL (12%). ICU mortality was 30%.
