Tradução científica de The thalassaemia syndromes: reflexões sobre questões terminológicas e estratégias de tradução

O presente trabalho de projecto concilia a tradução de dois capítulos de uma obra ainda não traduzida para o português – intitulada The Thalassaemia Syndromes, da autoria de D. J. Weatherall e J. B. Clegg, publicada pela Blackwell Science em 2001 (4ª Ed.) – e a elaboração do respectivo relatório. A escolha deste texto justifica-se pela escassez de literatura em língua portuguesa existente na área da talassémia. Ao mesmo tempo, resulta de uma vontade de realçar a importância da tradução de textos especializados na divulgação do conhecimento científico. Os capítulos traduzidos – originalmente intitulados Historical perspectives: the many and diverse routes to our current understanding of the thalassaemias e Thalassaemia: classification, genetics and relationship to other inherited disorders of haemoglobin – são apresentados sob a forma de anexo. O relatório foi elaborado a partir da análise de um conjunto de aspectos decorrentes do processo tradutológico, centrando-se, fundamentalmente, em questões relacionadas com a tradução de terminologia especializada. O comentário à tradução realizada salienta as diversas dificuldades com que o tradutor se depara na transposição da terminologia do inglês para o português. Para além de uma breve caracterização de cada um dos problemas encontrados ao longo da tradução do texto, são também apresentadas e fundamentadas as estratégias adoptadas para a sua resolução. As soluções sugeridas reflectem uma preocupação constante com a necessária equivalência de sentidos entre as duas línguas, bem como com a qualidade do texto de chegada. A originalidade deste trabalho é reforçada pela apresentação, em anexo, de um glossário bilingue que reúne os termos da área em questão encontrados no texto traduzido, muitos deles ainda não atestados nas bases de termos e dicionários consultados, que poderá constituir um auxílio a futuras traduções.

ABSCTRACT This research project combines the translation of two chapters of a work not yet translated into Portuguese - entitled The Thalassaemia Syndromes, written by D. J. Weatherall and J. B. Clegg, published by Blackwell Science in 2001 (4th Ed) - and the preparation of its report. The choice of this text is justified by the lack of literature in the Portuguese language in the existing area of thalassemia. It is, at the same time, the result of a desire to emphasize the importance of the translation of specialized texts in the dissemination of scientific knowledge. The translated chapters - originally titled Historical perspectives: the many and diverse routes to our current and correct understanding of the thalassaemias and Thalassaemia: classification, genetics and relationship to other inherited disorders of hemoglobin - are presented in the form of attachment. The report was drawn from the analysis of a number of issues arising from the process of translation, focusing mainly on issues related to the translation of specialized terminology. The review stresses the various difficulties that the translator faces in transposing terminology from English into Portuguese. Apart from a brief description of each one of the problems encountered during the translation of the text, the strategies adopted to address them are also presented and grounded. The suggested solutions reflect the continuing concern with the necessary equivalence of meaning between the two languages, as well as the quality of the target text. The originality of this work is reinforced by a bilingual glossary, presented in the form of attachment, that meets the terms of the area in question found in the translated text (many of those terms are not certified in the terminology databases or in the dictionaries consulted), which may be an aid to future translations.
