Resumo

The thesis entitled “Good teachers who make the difference in students’ lives: knowledge and practices that distinguish their leadership”, is a result of the following set of problems: although inappropriate material conditions due to the precariousness of public investiments, and the lack of appropriate behavior of a great number of students may lead to the demotivation of teachers and the incredulity of education, how is it possible to find teachers who resist to the negative factors of conflictive educational contexts and stand out positively through their teaching? The question challenged us to search for references of good teachers in bibliographies, in which we grouped as following: I - Valorization of the relationship with students; II - Dialectic between objectivity and subjectivity: compromising with school subjects, as well as students’ learning conditions; III - Process of being in constant formation (selfformation) which increases the social and spiritual conscience of the teacher. From this point on, we accomplished a qualitative research through a case study of the good teacher existent in school, using ethnopraphy as a scientific support, which allowed the exploration of the “good teacher” phenomenon, listening to and watching him or her, withouth having any previous hypothesis about the pretex of his or her quality, but bulding this pretext during the research process. The study of the reality was accomplished in six municipal schools of São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, in which we identified in the good teachers observed (pointed by the pedagogical supervisors of the schools) indications of good teaching related to affection, firmness and to theoretical knowledge. The theoretical analysis of these data resulted in three categories which define the work of a good teacher: I - Inclusive methodology guided by affection and firmness; II - Practical and theoretical knowledge; III - Innovative and motivating teaching practice. The set of these categories legitimates the knowledge and practices of teaching leadership, in which the educational concepts are established and also break with the practices guided by severity and omission towards the school challenges by replacing them with inclusive practices, contemplating the challenges of the current educational context.
